@sparklekeepmegoing-blog
A few years back i had a cool dream whilst flipping through a book i had negligently bought from an ‘Alternative Medicine’ store. A journal for noting ‘Thankfulness’ and the sorts, but to my disapproval after having a good look at it’s contents as a whole. I had a strong shift in my spirit, i felt a strong word inside of me that I, was going to create a book, for Women, “for a better purpose.” Oh Heck.
How do you ignore that kind of message? It wasn’t from ME, that’s for sure!
I’ve only written notes occasionally, for my own good. Never have I thought to open my thoughts up to the rest of the world, or even in fact to friends or family for that matter.
Yesterday was a strange day in many kind of wonderful ways. My Family had gone to visit the racetrack for birthday celebrations, and to spend time with the rest of the respective family. Here i was alone, for 28 hours. I’d cleaned the house. It stayed clean, so I was mighty pleased. I played. I drank (thanks cramps) i cleaned. A tiny pang of loneliness came once but was quickly removed my a movie in which I watched in it’s entirety. WOW. What’s this Fiona? It got late, Mia, our beautiful protector was barking and i felt uneasy, so off to the movies i went. 9:20pm I sat inside the cinema to watch a chick-flick, alone. I left and woke on the lounge hours later. I’m really pushing myself here. At this stage i wondered whether church was a good idea. I felt awkward. I felt closed off, unrelated. The message hit me for 6.
I was read like a book. I was uncomfortable. God reminded me in a split moment of a dream from what seemed years back, but quickly dismissed. That is, until i made eye contact with the lovely Annette. Annette had a message through the service about a “Budding Author”. Presuming it was about herself, she dismissed it too..
She saw me leave and asked me about a book. Making the motion of opening a book, she asked again. “You have a book, Fi” Confused, yes I have many.
“Fi, you need to get your book out and work on it”
“PARDON?”
“God was telling me about a budding Author, that’s you!”
“Pardon? No. No. I write, but i’m not an AUTHOR”
And so I left that building bewildered and built at the same time.
There’s a lot of work to do inside... before I’m ready to let anyone in, let alone write a book!
Sheesh!
Simple truths to repeat when you’re in a spiritual battle:
God’s got this
The Lord fights for me
Jesus loves me
Not today satan
I am a child of God
He is able
It is finished
His Grace is sufficient
Joy comes in the morning
I am not alone
I am fearfully & wonderfully made
Fear has no grip on me
Christ is enough for me
He has overcome the world
I am a new creation in Christ
Jesus conquered the grave
Sin doesn’t define me, Christ does
Be still & know
God is good
How did i get here? *WARNING - Private Testimony Ahead*
How did i get here?
THERE’s a story. I began my Faith in God at a young age, about 13. I was introduced to a small school meeting called ISCF in high school. It was fun and talked about morals and a little on the Christian Faith. Friendships were formed and we’d almost become like brothers and sisters in a way that id never experienced before. I felt accepted and probably experienced one of my first ‘crushes’ too..EEK!
I was then ready to take the leap to Youth Group, and fortunately my parents were accepting enough of my curiosity to drive me and pick me up late.
I’d learnt about LOVE, a family that was interested in me and help me through the early teenage phase that so many young girls struggle with. The age old “I don’t know who i am”. I hadn’t read the bible at all... I realised that people still do, and thought that would be a good place to start in my own personal journey. Unfortunately, i found it boring, it didn’t make a whole lot of sense on my own and none of my ‘friends’ read it.. so there was no real inclination for me to even try.
Deep inside i had a yearning for a gap to be filled. This ‘gap’ i felt was being replenished every time i was in the presence of my new ‘Christian Friends’ and i felt the urge to keep that satisfied, so off i went to Church (to the surprise of my parents) “Whatever you want”, they said. Thank-you Mum.
What a whirlwind of a ride that was!
In-between the desires of a teenage worldly young lady and the need to be a ‘good Christian’ i fell somewhere in the middle most of the time. I’d attend the parties with the concoctions of the world... sleep in another mans bed, walk to church the next day like nothing happened. Other occasions, I’d do my ‘experimenting’ walking through the bushes to church and unbeknown to me what i smelt like by the time i got there...
There was talk.
I’d be scolded by children that i was wearing the jacket of the devil. I’d be warned by the Pastor’s wife to cover up on other days, and on the days i could fit into my sister’s size 8 mini-dress, i wore that and wondered why i had the eyes of the back-row gentlemen. (i say gentlemen lightly)
I rarely fit in. They really could have told me to leave and not come back. I am so grateful today that they had a heart for winning disciples no matter how they/ we/ i come in.
I gave my heart to God and was baptised. My friends did... why not.
We had drug dealers sitting in the row beside me. I realised this one day when my boyfriend at the time moved in with them... That’s when my views of the church at the time become un-trusting.
My boyfriend passed away, i’d quit work, regained work, moved out of home, got involved with the same shenanigans all over again. i hadn’t touched my bible in a year.
There’s a man in shining armour on the other end of a ‘Friendship website’ His name was Ben. I was broken but slowly rebuilding. He was broken, he was rebuilding. We talked for months and got to know each-other. We hit it off, we realised within a day, we knew each-other on a level that we felt we didn’t ever want to be apart. Within days of meeting face-to-face, we were dreaming of the future, we had the same ideas, we believed in the same morals, the same sense of humour, same goals...same electricity. The engagement ring was on my finger under the blessing of my dear Father. Ben’s Grandfather (Bless his soul) would have the honour of marrying his Grandchild, his last marriage, just 3 months later.
12 Years ago we met and now Still married under the oath of God. Hallelujah!
It took a good long 10 years for Ben and i to truly give our hearts completely to God. It took a special friend and a special blessing for us to realise that HE was truly on our side in this Life thing.
As an adult, i realised in the bible it says there is 1 Baptism. That’s pretty black and white. When it comes to your heart, you want it stripped of hurt, stripped of pain, stripped of all the desires of the world. And around about the time of our Blessing was put on our family. we said to God, “If this is your will, We will baptised in the water of the pool in which you give us”
The house was ours. We would both be baptised, cleansed and refreshed... And so our TRUE relationship with God was born. Our hearts had truly been refreshed, As adults, a true heartfelt decision that had changed us both in ways we never thought would come.
An example to our children.
I would not change the experience for the world. And being a 15 year old in the hands of Hypocrisy and no true grasp of what it means to be baptised, there is room to let this be a lesson to myself and my Husband to lead and preach what it really means to give your heart to God... So although the bible says; ONE Baptism, when it comes to your relationship with our Heavenly Father, i KNOW he will much rather your Soul and your true heart, than an argument about the facts of the Bible. I was baptised twice, but i truly gave my heart on the Second.
Be Grateful in all things...
I bought myself some flowers 2 days ago. I’d successfully cleaned the home for the first time in 3 weeks as It’s been a terrible month for it… And so what a reward! Unfortunately, it’s taken me 2 days to actually sit and admire them.
Flowers are a funny thing, but while I was sitting there admiring the prettiness of the pink in the Carnations and the shapes, pure perfection. I thought of the sheer marvelousness of God’s hands that made them! He truly is an artist! I could barely take my eyes off them beauties. There’s Buds, still await their time for their debut… Will they be noticed or will they, too, and just wither away unnoticed. They could have.. What a shame. How many wonders or otherwise, go unnoticed In people’s day to day lives, every day? What joy are people missing out on because their lives, like mine, become a continuation, one day runs into another and more about what we need to do next, where we have to be, who to meet… We do miss the simple things that are right there in front of us.
We know of a story in the Bible about Mary and Martha. Sister Martha was so busy running errands, she couldn’t see the joy that was in front of her until it was put straight, “Martha, Martha, your are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary…” Said Jesus. [Luke 10:42] And I’d bet she soon saw what she was missing and sat at his feet at once.
What comes from just being still? In our minds we can go any which way. The 2 which will make up our mood for any given day are quite simple. 1 being an attitude of Thankfulness. The other, bitterness, resentment, loneliness and general sadness. Before, in my days before I become a Christian, If i had bought my own flowers, I would have sat in my despair looking at these flowers and possibly dive into a pit of depression. (I was quick with my thinking and didn’t waste time) instead of looking at its beauty and take my time taking in the smell and colours, I’d be tormented by the idea that My husband didn’t make the effort to buy them for me, or one of my children had forcefully bent one of the stems and so now the whole bunch is ruined. Oh how I’m so relieved that hasn’t happened this time! My heart hurts now just thinking of it. (*good thoughts**good thoughts**) I’m back.
Sadly, I was taught such thoughts. I won’t say where, but that’s the world we live in. God teaches us not to be conformed to the ways of the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…“ [Romans 12:2] That sits well with me here, because when we have Christ (truly) in our hearts, how can we have an attitude of despair and discontent? Truly accepting God in our lives we take on all He does for us. We need to allow our Father to transform is both in our minds, as well as our hearts.
We need to be aware of which direction our heart takes in the presence of something beautiful and simple. Which direction does our mind take us? Generally, what we say and think comes from where our heart is at. What we ask of our Father in prayer we can get a good idea of where we are at in out heart. God LOVES instances where we can ask of God for things in our life with sheer honesty.
11 God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king 2 Chronicles 1 (NIV)
Solomon could have asked for many things… If his heart was different, what course would his relationship with the Lord have taken, and hence, his leadership as King? He wouldn’t have had the closeness with God that he did, and assuredly he wouldn’t have had the strength and the ability to carry out the duties as King as he was called.
Asking God to help us in our thoughts and desires of the Heart is a good start to a change in attitude and path of gratitude. It remains to be seen where our lives could go and the blessings that could be upon us, if we just stop, and let God enter our lives at every moment. Imagine if every bitter thought had God’s grace washed upon it…and be free from it.
Go be free from that discontent, smell those flowers and set your mind to thankfulness. Where would we be without God’s beauty in the world? We just have to find it!

When Convictions come ...late
My Husband and i have been together for the best part of 12 years. Longer than some, longer than i had first anticipated, Shorter by far, than the time we plan. How we are together still baffles me some days after facing together what most marriages would call quits on. We tend not to share these experiences, you’ll have to use your imagination. At the end of the day, we still stand by our vows, a memorable 12th of March. We had written our vows based on the short time we had known one another and the LOOONG future we seemed to had envisioned right from the beginning. God knew all along, the path with this Human i call my Husband.
My Earthly Father knew i was going to be a Mum, years before i did. Mum and Dad had put together their funds for my first car. A Suzuki Sierra? Something Fun and productive and a funky car to do some shiny skiddies around the streets? Sadly not. Dad knew I’m going to need something SAFE. Something accommodating for a family. He could really see it... They bought a Hyundai Excel 5 door. Nice.
They could all see it, long before i could. A Mum! HA! Within weeks of meeting, [properly]. So did my future Husband. You do the math.
I’ve always had an internal need for independence. After our first son was born, the next year (more Maths) i felt i wanted to pursue the trade of Fitting & Turning. In the events that followed we will realise that God’s hand was on our marriage the whole time.
My Husband was pursuing the idea of a Motorsports Complex. I was pursuing a career in another direction, that is, until God started shutting doors and opening windows. “Right” We’d say, “If you don’t get this apprenticeship, we will try for another baby”
I didn’t get it, and even if i did, i would have been put off months later with the downturn. Meh.
Baby # 2. This is nice.
Sporting 2 children under 5, i try for Uni. Health gets really messy. Uni now on the back-burner and my health returns...It looks as though i’m meant to be home. I help Ben our where i can, running errands etc.
So I’m playing a glorious housewife. I try and support the vision by joining the team and playing a part, getting a voice and getting ...independent. We know how this ends. And yes, it falls apart then lands right back in my Husbands Lap. It seems this is Ben’s Baby, and God says so.
Child # 3 comes along. Feeling fulfilled and with great Joy. Except one thing...I start thinking... There’s a certain void. I’d asked God to be with me and to never leave me many years ago. It’s time to really get to know this Man who really takes my life into his hands, and for HIS Glory. Never underestimate the power of a praying wife. Husband and Wife are baptised on her 30th birthday. We realise, doors open, doors shut and the only one in control is our Father in Heaven and we need to start taking him seriously. Fast forward 18 months...
I’m sitting enjoying a tasty water with my dearest friends over a coffee date. I mention a certain progress with the Motorsports and they sweetly ask ME, “What are YOU going to do?” What am i going to DO? Well i stay home and be a Mum, and i support my Husband, of course. Dear friend was taken aback, and what floored me was what came next. It had hit home, her feeling of ‘what can i do, for me, me, me’ She said and i’m seeing a twang of guilt i suppose, and there it is.. The conviction i had been waiting for. YES, I’m a Mum, but i stay and i support my husband at home. I don’t necessarily do a great job keeping home, but i do share the vision of his making in the last 12 years. This is where God has kept me, keeping doors shut BUT every time i take the challenge and accept being home, being the praying wife, being the understanding ear, the helpful hand for the one, GOD, himself, had placed my heart with... We are moving forward with leaps and bounds. Trusting that God knew my calling long before i dreamed of it is truly astounding to me. He has played every part, right up until that very conviction, this very week. He Knew.
With this, who am i to question? Who am i to dream up another life? It simply won’t work and couldn’t possibly make you even remotely as happy. He has put me with a man who can satisfy my every need, This marriage has gone the distance (where did it go?) My Husband has allowed me to dream bigger than i ever could on my own. More importantly, God has shown the both of us that His plan is better when we are a complete Team. Married into 1, we will work as 1, because anything that is not in His vision is certainly not worth pursuing.
Onward and Upwards!
Ephesians 5:22-24
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
