We are a community-oriented collective that offer Nahuatl language and culture courses for all ages. We facilitate sessions year-round and offer both online and in-person formats which include workshops at colleges and community spaces. We also offer written translation services in Nahuatl, English and Spanish, and Mesoamerican cultural and linguistic consultations. Lastly, we offer connections to language justice resources (translation + interpreter services) and Indigenous language revitalization resources. Introduction to Nahuatl with “Speak Nahuatl” Instructors

As one of Mexico's 68 Indigenous languages, Nahuatl has over 1.6 million speakers based on 2020 data. It is actually the second most spoken language in Mexico, after Spanish.  

Join this introductory language series: Jalisco Nahuatl (N-WP | N-PO) for Beginners with Cuitlahuac Arreola Martinez and Matthew Olmos. Emphasis on Western Peripheral dialects including those from Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacán. Language acquisition with practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. 

Wednesdays, 5:30- 6:30 p.m.

November  4 & 18 

Workshops are facilitated in English and/or Spanish, depending on who attends.

10 Tips to Effective Language Learning

1) Find a class with an L1 (native speaker) teacher OR an L2 (near-native level speaker) teacher who has learned from a native speaker. This will ensure that you learn the correct pronunciation. This will also ensure that you learn about the culture. Accounts like @yolitiacentrodelenguas,

@rutascompartidascolectivo, @colectivosetl & us are good ways to start.

2) Be respectful, listen & learn. Learning a language takes patience & time, thus it's important to listen & learn from the teacher as well as being respectful of the space & people in the class.

3) Reward your teachers. In some cases, funding is available for classes to be free. However, if this isn't an option, donate to your teachers for their time & effort.

4) Study in spoonfuls. Study 5, 10, 15 minutes at a time. You can do this throughout the day. If you do this throughout the week, it adds up!

5) Find study buddies. If you have the chance to connect with other students, reach out! Finding study buddies can help you build community while continuing to practice.

6) Apply what you learn to your daily life like stating the obvious or telling someone to go to sleep.

7) Ask questions! If you don't understand something, always be sure to ask. Usually your classmates had the same question.

8) Handwrite your new vocabulary and post it on your ideas board, your mirror, beside your bed or wherever you can read it often. Tip by @colectivosetl

9) Extend patience and grace to yourself in learning. Our mouth is learning a new way of speaking and enunciation or the act of saying or pronouncing words in the language can be a challenge to get past in forming words. Tip by @dza_summer

10) Consistency! Learning the language in popular songs i.e. happy birthday or twinkle little stars as well as learning traditional songs in the language. Sing while you wash your hands, drive down the road, doing laundry, etc. Tip by @dza_summer

Community-Based Collective Launches Year-Round Language Courses to Revitalize Jalisco Nahuatl (Mexicano)

[Online, In Person and Eugene-Sprinfield, OR] – Speaknahuatl, a community-focused collective/online school dedicated to teaching and revitalizing Jalisco Nahuatl (Mexicano) is excited to announce the launch of its year-round language courses starting next month. These courses aim to engage learners with the skills to be able to speak through speaking, reading and writing activities. These courses also serve as personal growth and development for its learners. 

Speaknahuatl offers three levels: Beginners 1 (no previous knowledge required), Beginners 2 (Beginners 1 course completion required) and Intermediate 1 (Beginners 1 + 2).
