All I've ever wanted was to be a good person, but

I'm beginning to believe it's a lie we've been sold

I felt that

I have enough love in my heart to fill an ocean on this God-forsaken planet,

But when I look around for a friend I find myself in a desert

I am tired of searching for my value in the ghosts of people I used to know

This year doesn't feel like a fresh, clean beginning where everything can be better and all of my dreams can come true. No, these past several months have left me feeling like every aspect of my life is constantly crumbling down around me, and 2023 feels like staring down the barrel of a gun fearing all of the many ways I will continue to fail, floundering for purpose and value and validation I may never find as I helplessly, hopelessly grasp at sand and try infinitely to glue the crumbs I catch back together.

You don't know my name, but I can't forget yours. The individuals that have taken it upon themselves to determine the value of my life. Do you smell the blood on your hands? Does it not sicken you? It drips from the throbbing wound you've cut and spreads fear across the country. I am not proud to be an American this Independence Day. Lady Liberty weeps today - a copper-skinned, immigrant woman checks none of the boxes required to be considered deserving of freedom in the "land of the free". The "home of the brave", however, continues to ring true as it takes courage to wake up every day and enter the world wondering which rights will be ripped from you next. Like my sorrowful protector and so many others, I have no home in this country, no guaranteed rights. I am trapped like an insect under a cup held by a handful of white men playing God. It seems some of you have been masquerading behind the Robe for so long you have forgotten the stitches it was sewn with. It pains me to recognize how much privilege I have - to know that my life is valued above so many others and yet still means nothing. Whatever happened to inalienable rights? To "liberty and justice for all"? Our country was built upon a foundation of lies weaved by the very same people that wave their power over us today, and as it continues to crack every day, it seems we may never choose the hard work, honesty, and empathy required to repair it. You have chosen Power over People, and, though my words may mean as little as my life to you, I can not and will not go down without a fight.

Anyone know of any easy way to do black-out poetry on a phone? The man behind the curtain (😉) is not so good with technology, and I always post from the mobile app. I'm super interested in trying my hand at it, though, and I'd appreciate any tips on the process as well!!!
