Translation of Italian interview of Cate Blanchett from F Italy, November 8th, 2017.Â
(Huge thanks to @lablanchett for the translations and @cateblanchettfan for the magazine scans!)
âWhat is the secret about my success? I have a husband for 20 years. I canât stay away from him.â
Andrew won over her with his words and immediately the actress felt they could get along on everything. They have unique relationship (sentimental and professional), thanks to which there are not only four children but also art.
She worked with Weinstein without being subjected to harassment. âIâve always felt beloved and strong with Andrew by my side.â
âAny man in a position of power or authority who thinks itâs his prerogative to threaten, intimidate or sexually assault any woman he encounters or works alongside needs to be called to account. It is never easy for a woman to come forward in such situations and I wholeheartedly support those who have.â
It doesnât matter that Weinstein has produced films such as The Aviator and Carol (films for which she gained two Oscar nominations), according to Cate all the men like Weinstein must respond to their crimes.
With balanced personality and always on the side of the underprivileged, the Australian actress is one of the most calm and serene person in Hollywood industry, thanks to her husband Andrew Upton: âIâve never felt confident without the right man. He gives me peace of mind and stability that allow me to concentrate on my work.â
The couple has four children, Dashiell, Roman, Ignatius, and a little girl adopter two years ago, Edith. âFor me itâs very important to have a large family. Although I love acting, I donât want to feel lonely or without family!â she said.
In real life sheâs the heroine of normality but when she acts she likes experimenting new characters (Manifesto, Hela in Thor Ragnarok).
After Wonder Woman, here is another superheroine. âYes, but Iâm really cruel! Iâm Hela, the goddess of death! No. in all seriousness, finally on the screen, even Marvelâs female characters are represented. There are so many of them but they have been little considered.â
Have your children been happy to see you playing a comic book character? âHonestly, I was the most enthusiastic because even though I am a mother of a certain age, I like playing and kidding. But, yes, even my children were happy to see me in that role.â
Who are the women who inspire you at the moment? âRihanna and Sarah Paulson.â
Manifesto has become a world art installation. What is art for you? âArt reflects our lives. It mirrors our hopes, illusions, feelings, weaknesses, dreams, and realizations.â
Cate, you look like a young lady, how do you keep fit? âI love eating and Iâm pretty lazy so I only put it into shape when it is strictly necessary (for example, when I have to shoot a movie), but immediately Iâll eat hamburger and pasta. I enjoy my life! For this Marvel film, I learned Capoeira and I had so much fun.â
Soon you will turn 50. Are you afraid of middle-aged crisis? âWe all have to face some crisis in life. The human being is imperfect and makes mistakes. Itâs true that in your 50, you start thinking about your life, the part, missed opportunity, failures and wrong choices but since you canât go back, itâs better to focus on your present.â
Are you scared about aging? âI think every age is important. For an actress, aging could be an interesting reality because we can get experience from our work. And do you know what the truth is?â
What? âIn this period of my life, Iâm very fine because I spend a lot of time with my family, with my darlings, and Iâm well-organized with my job.â
Youâre active in community theatre, do you prefer the theatre of making movies? âI love performing on stage because every night is different and special. Among the actors there is a unique alchemy and you can afford to improvise.â
You and your husband, Andrew, have been married ofr 20 years and still feel very âclose-knitâ. Does the âworking togetherâ help or hurt the couple? âAndrew and I support each other and we talk about everything. When I first met him, I felt that there was a special chemistry between us, there was no misunderstanding that could not be solved. All this made me think that we both could work fine as a couple but also at work.â
What is your recipe for happiness? âSeize the fleeting moment and appreciate what you have.â
And this is what you teach to your children? âYes. For the rest, theyâre free to do what they want. I donât want to project my expectations on them and make them insecure.â
Did maternity change you as a woman? âIâve become more practical: better at administering finances, more orderly at home, and more skilled in organizing time.â
Your friends say that youâre a very generous person. âI try to do everything with all my heart but also having friends who say good things about me is cool!â
Youâre famous for your support to other women. âI love my sons, and my husband, but I have a special relationship with my daughter: weâre very close and we trust each other. Besides, I was raised by two strong women: my mother and my grandmother who lived with us. I was inspired by their example: they did so many economic efforts to let us study and give us the best. Thanks to them, despite my privileged position, I know the value of sacrifice.â
She worked with Weinstein without being subjected to harassment. âIâve always felt beloved and strong with Andrew by my side.â
