with those words, catri’s already skidding across the room towards joy, eyes wide with delight. she’s heard music before, of course - the frardragas had hosted plenty of parties, welcomed all sorts of performers. but they were... drab? pretentious. only concerned with living up to high-class standards and playing music that could bore a person to sleep. 

travelling with joy, however, cat has learned that that isn’t what music really is. that music isn’t about perfect technique and sequences of notes performed at ridiculous speeds. music... music makes you feel, all the way down to your bones. makes you feel happiness - despair. puts into sound all the emotions you can’t ever hope to describe. sure, cat can draw a sketch or two, can put to a page what others imagine in their minds. but to have joy’s talents, to be able to vocalize a pinpoint moment in time? it’s breathtaking, and cat is overwhelmed everytime they’re willing to share that with her.

Never before has Delilah seen Stripes act so distinctively resentful, faithfully committed to her hard-faced, glacial disgruntlement. She’s seen impulsive, certainly, but not aloof. When the taunting question rolls of her lips, the wizard clenches her hands into firm fists once more. The strain of her frustration soon amplifies the throbbing ache in her damaged shoulder; she can feel the toxins pumping through her veins, scorching her from the inside. 

Yet still, Stripes’ attitude is nothing short of an inferno in comparison. “You’re no longer filthy, but you’re clearly not any smarter.“ Delilah retorts, bone-tired and crestfallen, far too fevered to be waging yet another war of words. “If you’re so inclined to know, yes! Yes, I’m scared! I’m terrified!” Despite the open air, her exclamations come out almost as if the plains are echoing her cries. She bites her tongue before another sound can spill from her mouth.

They’re nearing dawn, idling while the moons give way to the first streaks of sunlight and the sky brightens with mellow shades of purple and orange. They’re in the wilderness, nowhere close off the hook. The aid of her enchanted trinkets can only repel so much, danger can still catch up to them through the timeless practice of simple tracking. “And you should be too.” With that she shakes the spell of her nerves and moves past the shifter, treading westward.

An hour goes by in silence before Delilah’s heart struck by the first pang of the slow-spreading poison. She swallows the instinctive gasp, hissing instead as she briefly clutches her chest. Well aware of her prognosis, she pushes on in an attempt to outrun her impending doom. She’s seen the sophisticated work of those coated blades meant to immobilize with just one hit on target, without a doubt scouts are on their trail.

“... are you done?” perhaps she should be sympathetic - if that order was able to round up monks of all denominations, of all levels, was able to slowly draw out their secrets and twist them to their advantage... taking out one of their own should practically be a piece of cake. but it’s the animal instinct that’s overriding any logic at this point - the knowledge that yes, this alliance might be keeping her alive, but it’s also the alliance that put her there. and that means no matter what, she has to be on edge, on defense 

and so the march continues, the two of them in silence, stripes occasionally treading ahead, almost on instinct - and then falling back, not wanting that woman anywhere but in eyeshot. she takes notice of delilah’s... strange behaviour. but she attributes it to one of two things - her anxiety, or the fact that maybe she’s already backtracking, planning how to bring stripes back and beg her forgiveness. it isn’t like delilah to try the latter - but it also isn’t like her to announce her fear at the top of her lungs. so she keeps dragging her feet, running on fumes, essentially. it’s only when delilah speaks up that stripes actually pauses, halfway to some snarky retort - and then watching with wide eyes as delilah collapses. she stares at her for another second or two, then starts scanning through the trees, searching for anyone hidden in the shadows, who could be doing this. 

she doesn’t approach, caution and some sort of base logic overtaking reason, but when delilah starts to speak up again, she does let her attention drift downwards, taking in the information with a neutral expression. she has to give the caster credit where credit is due - for someone who's panicking, she’s sure holding up a calm front. stripes drops to a crouch, figuring that if they’re going to stay put while delilah attempts to resolve this, then they should at least attempt to hidden. 

her focus stays on the forest - she can at least try to make a run for it if someone starts coming their way, maybe she can hide in the trees. and then delilah is calling for her. “what?” she glances down to delilah, following where her fingers press. oh, the irony is strong in the moment. what stripes would have given for this about six months - oh, who was she kidding, up until about a week ago. she doesn’t say a word, however, taking a few small steps forward, her own hand shoving delilah’s aside, already getting the idea of what she needs to do. she presses down her fingers against the skin, as though she’s searching for something - and then the claws slowly drag across delilah’s skin, not particularly caring if the caster’s feeling any sort of pain. it’s... a method of releasing that internalized anger. controlled and careful - she still needs delilah, at least for some short period of time - but a release nonetheless. she doesn’t make it quick - makes sure delilah feels every second.

It may be only because it’s been a number of years since she last traveled with a companion, nonetheless Stripes’ absence is becoming far too apparent for Delilah to overlook. She’s gotten used to the shifter treading on her heels or making small talk with strangers in a characteristically ludic fashion; snooping around like a curious child. Uninhibited. Genuine.

Delilah’s perplexed by the precise lack of conversation; suddenly there’s no one to dance on her last nerves by bewailing at the slightest touch of hunger, no one to disrupt her concentration with incessant inquiries. Admittedly she doesn’t miss the obstructive nature of indulging Stripes’ impulses, but she’s having a hard time processing being deserted by her.

She’s telling herself not to let her pride get the best of her, not to question the abrupt change of pace, yet still she inevitably delves into a touch investigation. The few who have at least a trace of useful information to offer all claim the same, their haphazard recollections join together in near perfect detail: Stripes left under the watchful gaze of the stars, sparing no goodbyes.

For a day or two, Delilah manages to get her mind off her grand ideas. It isn’t until Trent approaches her with a potential assignment that the final puzzle piece clicks into place. In a flash, she’s seeing the clues she’s been missing - if her hypothesis holds up, she’s on her own. She doesn’t take that predicament lightly, deeming it only fit to test the waters in search for evidence.

it was all a bit of a blur. delilah brought her to rexxentrum, waxing poetic about it being the home city of all things arcane - or, those who would go through the appropriate channels to study the arcane, at the very least. the academy - she said the words with such weight, as though it were some altar to pray at. it was... impressive. stripes was farily certain she’d never seen such a large building. delilah had gotten them settled, introduced her to an instructor - trent ikithon. he... wasn’t someone stripes felt the need to get know too closely. he was always paying too much attention, to everything. even if people didn’t notice. 

but still, it was a nice break from the travels. a comfy bed to sleep in, halfway decent meals. but stripes hadn’t intended to stay for long. she’d quickly learned that the academy, on the other hand, had differing opinions about the length of her stay. it was the third day in - delilah had said she’d only need a couple more days, and stripes was fine to wait it out. but she never made it to the next morning. the sound of someone knocking on her door had her waking, and she could have sworn she’d heard delilah saying something, to let her in. so, very obviously, stripes got up to open the door. and there was her first mistake.  

there was a puff of god knows what in her face, and she was coughing, shaking her head - but that spray was getting into her lungs, burning down her throat until her vision went blurry and she was slumping into the wall, her eyes flickering shut. when she woke up, it took only a few seconds to adjust to see through the darkness, waiting for blurry vision to come clear - and then a punch to the gut sent all that spiralling. it was only after a couple punches and struggling miserably to fight back that she had the presence of mind to realize she was bound, that they’d taken the time to ensure she couldn’t slip free. 

another day of this, and she starts to hear the cries from the adjoining cells, starts to vaguely piece together what they want - information. how people who know nothing of the arcane, who are not blessed by some divine force, are still somehow able to warp the world in ways they can’t understand. how some of her order are able to shine bright lights from their fists, how others are able to stun their targets into paralysis. and when the monks don’t break their silence, when they stay true to their orders or faiths - that’s when the wizards begin to break them down. through the darkness, through curls that are damp with sweat, a little blood, (maybe even a few tears), stripes takes notice of the man from a few nights earlier. trent ikithon. it’s funny - she imagines that amongst these wizards, that some of them must have means of extracting the truth. but as they attack them physically, through arcane means - stripes comes to the realization that they’re not necessarily searching for an explanation. they need to see it in action, how it comes together, to... what, replicate it? research it? she’s still not quite sure on that point, she hasn’t had much food, and she’s starting to wonder if the water comes straight from the sewers. 

on day seven, they free her from her bindings - it’s clear that no matter her skill, she’s too weak to fight back. day eight, and she’s struggling to form clear thoughts, memories and the present blending together in terrifying ways - including a vision of delilah, standing at the bars of the cell. she knows better than to trust it - they’ve already tried that trick a couple times, and besides, delilah was the one to bring her here. she was probably in on the trick the entire fucking time. but this time, the vision manages to break in, has her hands on her back, is trying to raise her to her feet. and that’s when stripes begin to realize that this might actually be real. “... took you long enough,” she croaks out after a few moments of trying to form words, her laughter bordering somewhere on the line of hysterical. “more - more of your friends... coming?”

        okay,  well,  that was the flaw in her plan at the moment  –  there wasn’t like asterin had a place where they could go right now where they know that there will be work waiting.  but maybe they could go back to one of the towns or cities that they’d done work for in the past,  whether it was helping the local government rid itself of a pest or be extra reinforcements during a high profile event.  surely one of those places would be willing to give two young women with nowhere else to turn a chance.  she tries to not let the realization of the flaw show on her face, but cat had often teased her about how her eyes gave her away most of the time,  no matter how stony her expression was. 

        and then there was the matter of catri’s family.  asterin knew a little of catri’s past,  of what her parents made her do for their own benefit,  and she hated them for it.  she understood why catri left and insisted just as much as asterin had that they keep moving, at least up until this point.  they could easily find their daughter and whoever she was with and try to take her back.  she can see what goes unsaid clear as day on catri’s face,  and a hand lifts to cup her cheek gently in reassurance. 

       “ i know you’re worried about them.  what settling somewhere for more than just a few weeks could mean.  but catri,  my love,   you left them.  that alone takes an incredible amount of courage.  if they find us,  let them find us.   you’re a better person without them,  and if they think for even one second that they can just take you back home with them,  then i will gladly show them the divine end of my warhammer. ”  she smiles gently,  trying to make catri laugh,  to lift her spirits even just a little.  “ i love you,  cat.  i want us to be able to find somewhere that we can live and work and not have to worry about finding a good place to set up a fire,  making sure there’s running water nearby,  if one of us has to stay on watch to make sure nothing comes after us.  i’ve been running just as much as you’ve been,  though for different reasons.  and now,  because of you… i’m ready to stop.  whatever that means. ”

catri immediately nuzzles into the touch of asterin’s palm against her cheek, her own hand reaching up to cradle around that of her lover’s. it’s not a fear that she admits to frequently - she claims that she wants to see as much of the world as she can, that life behind walls had made her want to make sure she could see every inch, as far as she could go. but it’s... them, really. that drive her to keep moving, to never take the risk of calling anywhere home. not when they could only be a few steps behind her. 

she sighs, listening carefully to asterin’s words, knowing fully well that this woman in front of her wouldn’t feed her bullshit. she has a point - a point cat often struggles with, but a point nonetheless. she chuckles softly, shaking her head. “now that would be a sight to see,” she confesses, lips even managing to curve up into a smile. “and... i understand. and gods - i would give absolutely anything for that to be our lives. it would be absolutely spectacular. i just... give me some time to think on it?” it’s almost a plea - she just needs time, to mentally prepare, to consider every potential outcome.

then she goes back to staring, looking down at catri with a brow quirked upwards, head tilted every so slightly. ❝ you should be more careful. ❞ the eyes all dart in various directions, making sure no new guards have been alerted by the commotion. ❝ are you still coming ? ❞

“gee - thanks for the advice.” catri shuts her eyes, waiting a moment for the ache to at least fade, before rising up to a sitting position, hands by her sides. “i’m coming,” she finally grumbles, pushing herself back to her feet, trying not to look so helpless. alright - so the whole escape thing isn’t her forte. no big deal. she never claimed it was in the first place. “we’re going this way,” she grumbles, nodding for monaeria to follow her - and making sure that this time there is no risk of having to jump from one building to another. for both of their safety, of course.

alright - my intention for today is to FINALLY start working on replies after not touching things for like... two weeks? three weeks? i’m not really sure it’s been a long ass while. 

secondly, i have a new muse!! i don’t have a full bio up for her or anything yet, but the gist of it is this: aluna beren, gnome rogue, swashbuckler subclass. she can charm her way past any locked door, knows when to flash a smile and how to bat her lashes - and then pin you against the wall with her rapier in a second. but i swear i will have a full bio/more detailed info up eventually.

        “ must you act surprised at everything i say i’ve never experienced before ? ”  asterin says it with a small chuckle,  despite her better judgement.  she had always been good at fighting through the aches and pains of her work,  her very purpose,  but catri must have been able to sense the tension and discomfort that asterin had been carrying.  this is the first night in almost a week that they hadn’t been camping in a clearing somewhere,  there was an actual roof over their heads and a bed that could be shared,  not two bedrolls pushed together as much as they could be.  there was no reason to sleep with armor on,  so catri had insisted she do this.

          and how glorious it was, when her hands started to rub the sore muscles in her back, especially around her shoulders,  as that was where the armor was more often than not the heaviest.  if she wasn’t sitting,  she’d have fallen to her knees in an instant.  asterin reaches a hand back when catri leans forward and presses a kiss to her shoulder,  tangling her hand in her lover’s wild red hair.  “ i’m sure my back will be forever in your debt. ”

        it’s rare for her to take a moment to breathe,  to just be present in the moment,  to lean on someone else for a chance instead of being the person being leaned on.  but now,  with catri’s arms around her,  she does.  if there has ever been a moment that she wanted to etch into her mind forever,  it would be this.  a simple,  quiet moment where her defenses could come down.  of course,  it couldn’t stay quiet forever.  this was asterin.  “ have you ever thought about it ?  about stopping all the moving around and camping and going from town to town hoping there’s work there ?  because i have.  especially after this week.  i’ve missed having a roof over my head that isn’t the cloth of a tent. ”

“oh, absolutely,” catri replies with an all too comfortable ease, smirking down at asterin in return. she only teases her out of love, really. but it’s just... odd, to share all these experiences which seemed so utterly mundane to cat, only to learn that they were entirely out of place for her counterpart. there’s an odd sort of joy that comes with giving asterin all these experiences, to know that she’s the one to introduce her to... some sort of normality on this plane. 

 “oh, i’m sure you’ll find a way to repay such a heavy debt,” cat teases, leaning back down to pepper a few more kisses across her shoulder. she’s still not entirely sure she managed to work the tension out of asterin’s back entirely, but - she supposes the work that she was able to get done would have to do. however, as asterin begins to start expressing her thoughts, catri looks up, a surprised expression flickering across her features. 

she sits back slightly before shifting around on the bed, moving to face the cleric. “i... i don’t know.” it’s an honest confession - she hasn’t thought of settling in years. never... really imagined it was something she could be allowed. she shrugs slightly, trying to figure out how best to answer. “it - it would be lovely. but where would we go? and how would we...” she trails off, a frown already finding its way onto her features. ‘hide from my family’ is the immediate thought that clouds her mind, and she’s embarrassed and ashamed of it.

“never ever? that’s rather surprising.” cat’s hands continued to smooth up and down over asterin’s spine, though she didn’t press as forcefully as she had before. if the cleric was ever in pain or discomfort, she certainly made it absolutely unnoticeable. she never complained about aches or pains, never expressed her own injuries, was always worrying about the others around her. cat could only wonder if part of it was her nature as a healer, or if it was endoctrinated in her by her... goddess. 

but tonight, regardless of her protests, cat was determined to take care of asterin for once. and so she’d settled her on the bed, stripping her out of armour and leathers, rolling her tunic up so her back was exposed, and taking all the time in the world to work out every knot and kink her fingers could find. leaning down to give the space between asterin’s shoulders a soft peck, catri’s fingers wrapped around her side, giving a squeeze. “i’ll make sure to do it much more often.”

       “ if you’re going to be that adamant about it,  then i can get some new armor made.  i’m not made for dresses.  how am i supposed to make a timely escape in this thing ? ”  from this party ?  from this dance ?  in general ?  it’s hard to pin down exactly what she means by it.  “ actions speak louder than words or clothes ever will.  i’d rather be known for what i do,  not what i was wearing on any given occasion. ”  but maybe before they leave town,  she’ll go to the same seamstress and see what alterations can be made to make this outfit part of her meager wardrobe,  whether it’s worn as something practical or as a surprise for catri.   

        asterin can sense catri’s internal debate about how to best rub this dance in the princes’ face.  before she turns to look at him from their current position on the dance floor yet again,  she gently turns catri’s face back to her own,  a small smile spreading across her features.  “ you were the one who dragged me out here,  remember ?  if people see you looking back at the prince this much,  they might think you’re intentionally trying to get his attention.  i know that i would much appreciate your attention until this song is over,  far more than he would. ”

“you’d be surprised how useful the extra material on a dress can be in a tight spot,” catri answers with a mischievous grin, recalling some escape plans that had manifested through torn dresses turned into rope chains out the window. her expression softens, however, as asterin explains herself more thoroughly, nodding in agreement. “i understand. but still - every once in a while the world ought to see just how splendid you are. armour or not.” 

cat’s eyes widen ever so slightly at asterin’s grip on her face, her lips already curving upwards into a smile. “is that so, darling?” her hands change positions, now resting on the cleric’s waist, pulling her in a little closer. “i think they’d have to be rather stupid to consider that i would even have any remote sort of interest in him when i have you right in front of me.”

        monaeria holds an expression equally as unimpressed, if not moreso——though she does hesitate for a beat ; despite how many years its been since she traveled with a group, it still feels odd to go FIRST in any sort of situation. she’s far too used to being pushed past, watching  &  waiting for the less-dexterous to fall, then require assistance. after her brief reminiscing, though, she lifts the hood of her cloak to just above eye level, gets a slight running start,  &  leaps across the gap with ease.

       wordlessly, she then turns to wait for catri,  &  through the dark ; it almost appears as though she’s faintly smirking, herself. ALMOST.

okay. so she probably should have expected that monaeria would have made the jump without so much as missing a beat. she may not know much about the woman, but it’s pretty evident that she knows how to get around unnoticed. a younger cat might have stuck her tongue out at the woman, but she sticks to pursing her lips before letting out a sigh. taking a couple steps back, she gauges the distance, trusting her own skills to get her across. another deep breath, and then she’s making a running start and leaping across - and letting out a grunt as she just barely gets her arms over the edge of the building, body slamming straight into the wall. “fucking - gods,” she gasps, the wind knocked right out of her, and it takes her a good minute or two to finally pull herself up and over, twisting over so she’s stretched out on her back, one arm slung across her most certainly bruised ribs. “... not - a - word.”

“do you have the coin to purchase horses?” viza’s voice was gruff and her gaze pointed forwards, not bothering to focus her full attention on her new travel partner. she was grateful to threnn, don’t get wrong. that was a tight spot to find herself in, and she was grateful for the out. but the fact that they hadn’t split yet was... disarming? unsettling? both the words are too intense a feeling - if threnn were out to harm her, she’d had plenty of chances. strange, would be the best way to label this entire situation. 

sighing, she finally did turn her head, eyes narrowed at the stranger (companion? no - that’s far too informal). “i’m not in any hurry to get anywhere particular. are you?” the question was an attempt at being... cordial. she still wasn’t quite sure if the tone came across correctly, but it was an honest effort.
