#2020 mood
Oh boy, little did he know.
HOLY SHIT, IT WAS THE ORIGINAL ONE
MAKE A WISH
date of origin: 2013
iirc isn’t this the post that people complained about so much that they finally moved the reblog button to the bottom of posts
“We can accept an imperfect dad. Let’s face it, the idea of a good father was only invented like 30 years ago. Before that fathers were expected to be silent and absent and unreliable and selfish. And we can all say we want them to be different, but on some basic level, we accept them. We love them for their fallibilities, but people absolutely don’t accept those same failings in mothers. We don’t accept it structurally and we don’t accept it spiritually. Because the basis of our Judeo-Christian whatever is Mary, Mother of Jesus, and she’s perfect. She’s a virgin who gives birth. Unwaveringly supports her child and holds his dead body when he’s gone. And the dad isn’t there. He didn’t even do the fucking. God is in heaven. God is the father and God didn’t show up. So, you have to be perfect, and Charlie can be a fuck up and it doesn’t matter. You will always be held at a different, higher standard. And it’s fucked up, but that’s the way it is.”
— Marriage Story (2019), written and directed by Noah Baumbach
What I love about Charlie…
Marriage Story (2019)
Myth of Soulmates in The Half of It
So, first off - spoilers very much ahead.
But one thing that I wanted to talk about that caught my eye during The Half of It, is the use of mirror imaging.
Our first introduction to the film talks about the Myth of Soulmates created by the Greeks: “humans were originally created with four arms, four legs and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves.”
And it sort of looks like there’s a mirror splitting them down the middle.
Throughout the film you see Ellie and Aster mirroring each other and themselves.
First in the bathroom:
Talking late at night:
Then in the pool:
And finally at the end:
I think it’s also kind of interesting that when this happens they are usually being vulnerable in some respect. In the bathroom scene, Ellie overhears about Aster’s family not even owning their house. The late night chats give a chance for both characters to be open and honest with their ‘hour of secrets’. In the pool scene, Aster has literally taken Ellie to her ‘favourite secret place’. Both of them reveal aspects about their lives to each other, with Ellie even talking about her mother (which we haven’t see her do openly before). Then at the end, when we have had the big reveal and Aster is aware of the letters coming from Ellie, we have the road splitting them in two.
Finally, Ellie crosses the boundary and kisses Aster. The two halves are now whole and the soulmates have found each other.
"Love is messy and horrible and selfish... and bold." - Ellie Chu [ insp. author ]

Alternate universe where I literally just to go to school forever (for free) so I can just learn about art and literature and history and languages for 100 years. No job skills. No credit requirements. No student loans. Just learning.
for the percy jackson disney+ series I think that it would be so cool to cast unknowns for the kids but well-known actors and actresses for the gods and goddesses. imagine the power of contrasting the power dynamic that those groups have both in the show AND in real life .... a cultural reset
THE INFERNAL DEVICES IS GETTING A TV SHOW
REBLOG TO SPREAD THE NEWS
lol me
trump got impeached, critics want to bawl their eyes out after watching cats movie, star wars fandom is in shambles after tros release, entire india is protesting against citizenship law, camila cabello's half assed apology for being anti black, jk rowling outed herself as a terf. this is too much info for me to process.
The Hunger Games, Actual Teen style!
On the left, 15-year-old Josh Hutcherson.
On the right, 16-year-old Jennifer Lawrence.
Think how much creepier it would be to see them killing other kids when they look so squishy-cheeked and little.
“Think how much creepier it would be to see them killing other kids when they look so squishy-cheeked and little.”
THAT’S THE POINT SUZANNE COLLINS WAS TRYING TO MAKE
Think about these cute squishy kids being forced into a romance in order to survive
And the threat of these cute squishy kids being forced into prostitution after the games are over.
REBLOGGING THIS AGAIN WITH A REMINDER THAT FINNICK WAS 14 WHEN HE WAS REAPED/WON THE GAMES AND WAS FORCED INTO PROSTITUTION SOON AFTERWARD
wait the kids were forced into prostitution after they won???
Some of the Victors were, especially if they were attractive to lots of rich people during the games. How do you think you pay off the parachute things people send you to help you win the game? Those books were so fucked up
That’s why I feel like actual teens should have been cast in the movie. It would have hammered in the message of the books so much more.
And if they had cast actual teenages, I’m sure they wouldn’t have focus so much on romance in the films. They would have focus on the horror of the hunger games, like they damn well should have.
The hunger game movies are the exact thing the hunger game books was trying to warn us about
