All he had from his parents were three words scribbled on the napkin of a muggle diner: "Take Care. We're Sorry." The napkin was weathered now, kept in tact by magic, tucked into the pocket of his duffel bag that he keeps packed at all times. It's a habit from his first 8 years of life that seemed a little hard to break. It's the only connection he has to the people who gave him life, other than knowing that they were somehow tied to the magical world. He was cared for in foster homes until he was 3, when he was put in a boarding school for orphans of magical families in the English countryside.
He didn't get along well with the other children. He was always quiet, unwilling to play along with their games. He much preferred spending time with his own thoughts than running and screaming with the others. That made him a target to the torment of the older boys. So Spence learned how to dodge, how to throw a punch, how to take a hit, and how to back off just in time for the other kid to be the one that got in trouble with their caretakers.
He was bright, earning high marks in all his classes, which made him a good candidate for adoption. So he was often paraded in front of interested parents. He always kept his bags packed, just in case he would be chosen. But the trouble of his history made things a bit complicated. He wasn't a pureblood, or it couldn't be proven either way. And, in front of people he didn't know, he was rather shy and came off as rude.
So when the Huxley's came through the doors of the institution, he wasn't expecting much. Having been through this countless times he thought nothing of it, until he actually got to meet them. They were nice, with warm smiles and bright hearts. She had such an encouraging smile, and he had eyes that seemed to understand the world. Spencer wanted so desperately to live with them, and for once in his life he got his wish. A week later, he gathered his bag and traveled to his new home.
It was the night he got there that he walked in on Mr. and Mrs. Huxley discussing "the siblings". They were born to muggles, and needed a home. When they saw him, they pulled him into the conversation. It was the first time he was asked how he felt about a decision before it was made, and a moment he will remember for the rest of his life. That feeling, of being part of a unit that decided together, was what family was. He told his new parents that they could always give it a shot, and maybe having siblings wasn't so bad. That's when Leo and Tyson entered his life. The adjustment was difficult for them all, but Spencer soon settled into his role as big brother. A little while later, a spitfire in the form of the youngest, Hayden, rocketed into the family and their little unit was complete.
Spencer remains incredibly protective over his siblings to this day. He would do anything for each of them, whatever he could in his own power. He sometimes finds himself cleaning up his siblings messes, but he always does so with a hint of amusement behind his scowl at them. They are the family he always wanted growing up, and the fact that they had made their way to one another against all odds made them even more special to him.
In school, Spencer developed a love for the kitchens. It started on accident, a dare from one of his classmates to steal some cookies from the house elves late one night, but he ended up spending a lot of his time in the kitchens with the elves. He learned a lot about cooking, especially sweets as they were his favorite. So when two sisters a couple years younger than him at the school opened up a confectionery in Hogsmede, he applied very quickly to work with them. Now, he can help craft new and exciting recipes to bring more and more joy to the faces of the students as they enjoy their weekend away from the grounds.
The war continues on, but Spencer isn't wholly concerned with it. He sees no need to pick sides. If he just keeps his head down, sells his sweets, and makes sure his siblings aren't too outspoken with their views, he knows they'll make it through, whatever comes.
