Lamproderma sp. slime mold from today - im so happy that i can finally photograph iridescence !!!
So sorry if I'm absent today guys I'm mourning (the car I wanted to buy and had gotten attached to bc I'm autistic isn't drivable long distances and he didn't tell us we'd need a trailer until we were about to leave to go look at it two hours away.)
//OOC
This applies here too. I'm joking a little bit but I'm genuinely devastated.
[ Open AU starter for the GB Afterlife rpers ] (He's alive! Somehow. He came back or something, don't worry about it. This takes place at a nonspecific time after Ghostbusters Afterlife.)
A faint sound was coming from Egon's home workshop; amongst the clanking produced by his work there was a noticable hum that almost sounded like... Music?
As (reader) approached it became more clear, an up-beat tune accompanied by the humming and occasional low effort singing of an old man focused on his task.
His attention was pulled from the busted trap in his hands when he heard them enter, eliciting a weak smile from him as he reached to turn the radio off.
"Hello. There's an extra stool there, if you can find it under those papers."
Izzy blinked. “Your an old man. Mom was right… I see the resemblance.” Izzy came over and dragged a stool over to where he was. “What are you doing? Old man stuff? My dad does old man stuff too Yknow.”
He hummed, tapping part of the trap with a live wire, causing it to spark. "I'm calibrating the energy field of this trap to create a forcefield-..." He looked back to Izzy and blinked. "Uh. In other words I'm giving it a zap so the ghosts can't get out."
“I’m not a baby, I know how those work.” Izzy said as she climbed up onto her knees so she could see. The preteen watched him carefully before pointing something out. “That wire shouldn’t be there.” She said. “And that pink one should have connected with the yellow one.”
Egon chuckled, patting her shoulder. "Of course you do." He reached into the trap, placing his fingers under the wire she'd pointed out to show her the connection. "It's temporary. Last week Ray encountered a very strange class 6 and rewired it on site to reverse the polarity. I'm just putting everything back now and fixing the loose components."
“I didn’t know old men still do fun things. I wanna hang out with you weirdos but school exists.” Izzy used a overhead light so Egon could get a better view. “So Mom told me how you guys met. Here, right? In this dusty barn?”
He nods, reaching for a pair of wire cutters to clip the extra wires. "Something like that. I'm not sure 'met' is the right word. I was a discorporated spectral entity with no physical body or ability to speak. I was far too weak at that point to manifest any type of visible form, but if you consider it a 'meeting' to merely communicate then I suppose it is accurate to say we met that night."
“You used a lot of large words.” Izzy remarked. “I can see why mom practically idolizes you.” Izzy picked up something to fidget with. “Your tools feel weird, I like this texture thingy.”
"I like to be specific. When you're dealing with heavy equipment and particle accelerators miscommunication gets people killed." He glanced over from the trap to see what she was holding. "What 'thingy?'"
Izzy was holding a pair of pluses that had that weird silicone covering with bumps. Izzy was entranced by the feeling of the bumps.
"Oh, yeah. That's so you don't drop it. Ray has a wrench somewhere with a particularly squishy handle that he sits and squeezes. I suppose we're all a little strange in that way."
He reconnected two of the wires and closed the trap.
"Well, that's finished."
Izzy was completely spaced out with her pair of pliers, playing with the bumps and messing around with it. “Your old,” she reminded him before going off the stool to find something to put apart.
"Yes. I'm aware." He stood up, gathering the trap in his hands and moving it to a different workspace. After watching her for a moment, he turned back to clean up the area he'd been working in. "Be careful over there."
“I’m fine! I didn’t faint today. Very happy ‘bout that!” Izzy beamed proudly as she played with some electricity stuff.
"Not fainting is certainly a positive." He tosses the pair of wire cutters he'd been using before back into it's designated spot and looks back in her direction. "I said be careful."
“Am I touching something I shouldn’t?” Iz asked. She smiled in a troublemaking way and tapped the proton pack she was messing around with. “Hey grandpa? Can I wear this and blast the old water cans?”
He raised an eyebrow at the question, prepared to deny her request. After a moment or so of just looking at her, he sighed and walked over, reaching past her to pick it up by the shoulder strap. "Not inside. Does your mother let you fire these?"
“If I said no could I still shoot the barrels?” Izzy asked with her best pleading face. “You’ll be the greatest grandpa ever!”
He hoisted the proton pack onto his shoulder and turned for the door, motioning for her to follow. "Come on then. If I recall correctly, she was younger than you are currently and didn't have any instruction when she fired her first proton pack. If you listen to what I tell you, you'll be fine."
Izzy’s eyes went wide. She ran after him. “How loud is it. If it’s to loud I wanna grab my headphones.” She said as she followed right beside him, like she was glued to his hip.
"It's loud." He stated very matter-of-fact-ly, pausing in the doorway. "I'll wait."
Izzy ran into the house, passing her mother who did not look happy about Izzy blasting the water barrels.
Phoebe walked outside and saw her grandfather with the proton pack. “Are you gonna explode things with my daughter?” Phoebe asked as she came over.
Egon looked towards Phoebe, raising an eyebrow and shrugging. He didn't see the problem with this at all. After all, he intended to keep her safe.
"Something like that. I'm not going to take my hands off of it."
The gears seemed to be turning in his head, like he was still reading her expression.
"Don't look at me like that. You rebuilt a proton pack, fired it without supervision, and destroyed half the town at her age."
Although he was still pretty monotone, there was a noticable intonation in his voice indicating he was trying to sound lighthearted rather than outright challenging her parenting.
“I was inexperienced. She is also inexperienced. I would really rather you two didn’t blow stuff up today.” Phoebe said. “I’m not saying I didn’t do that, but I could’ve seriously gotten hurt and thrown in jail. I don’t want Izzy to get hurt, thrown in jail or worse.” Phoebe stood her ground on this, crossing her arms.
"I'm not going to let that happen. I'm not even going to let her hold it on her own."
He sighed, running a hand through his hair to push it back.
"You didn't listen to your mother either, kid. Look, I'm worried that if we don't allow her to explore in a controlled environment she'll go behind your back and do something dangerous. Letting me help her learn about it in an empty field is far less dangerous than the alternative."
“You are 93 years old. You shouldn’t be out here doing this either. Can’t you just sit down and do… a puzzle with her? Make cookies? I don’t know, just not blowing something up?”
He shrugs. "She doesn't want to make cookies. She wants to blow something up. She's just like us, you know she'll never give it up."
“I mean if you two do this your both…” Phoebe thought for a moment. “Is grounded good? I’ve never had to ground Izzy before.” Phoebe gave him a look. “And I sure hope you’ll listen and tell her no.”
He thinks for a moment, visibly a little displeased about the situation. "Not even if I hold it and only let her pull the trigger? She can't hurt herself if she's not the one aiming it. I invented the damn thing, have a little faith."
Phoebe considered it for a moment. “Just this once. She gets today and until she’s…25 she won’t be touching that thing.” Phoebe said as Izzy ran out with her headphones in hand. “Hi momma watch this!”
Phoebe sighed and leaned against the doorframe. She watched Izzy closely to make sure she was okay.
Egon smiled slightly at that, ruffling Phoebe's hair with one hand and turning on the proton pack with the other.
"Deal."
He walks out further into the yard and points at the spot on the ground in front of him, looking at Izzy.
"Right here. Don't get in front of it, don't touch anything I didn't tell you to. Do exactly as I say."
Phoebe smiled as Izzy put her headphones on and waited for Egon’s instructions. Phoebe got her phone out to film this sweet moment.
Egon bent down a bit to her level, holding out the wand and pointing at parts of it as he spoke. "Put your hands here and here. I will let you move it around, but I'll make sure you don't hit anything else while you're aiming. Pres this button to fire."
Izzy put her hands where she should, making sure her aim was on the water barrel and nothing else. She looked up at Egon for the cue to fire, and when he did, she shot that water barrel and it went flying. “THAT WAS AWESOME!” Izzy said.
Egon smiled at her with pride, patting her on the shoulder. "Good job kid. You'll be a good Ghostbuster one of these days when you're old enough to handle it. But only when your mom says you're ready!" He looked to Phoebe with the last bit, as if to say 'See? I told you it'd be fine.'
Phoebe smiled, shaking her head as Izzy was absolutely stunned that she did that. “I can’t believe! I did it! I can use that thing! That’s freaking awesome!” Iz was over the moon with joy.
Phoebe stopped filming the two and sighed. “You two want some Cheezits or what?” She called out from the doorstep.
He reached behind himself to turn the proton pack off, then returned the wand to its spot on his back.
"What do you say, Iz? Snack time? I think that's enough ghost busting practice for today if we don't want Pheebs to go into cardiac arrest."
Izzy nodded before standing for a second. She covered her eyes with her hands and took a breath before going inside to get a snack.
Phoebe frowned when she saw Izzy do that. “Not again… do I need to line the house with pillows kiddo?” Izzy shook her head and went to go get a bowl of Cheezits.
Egon followed her in, gently dropping the proton pack once they were inside.
"Take it easy kid, not too fast."
He watched her go off to get the Cheezits with a faint tint of concern behind his normally static expression.
Phoebe frowned as she watched Puffy trailing behind Izzy. “That dog knows she’s probably gonna faint, and I know he can smell it.” She sighed, taking her glasses off to rub her face.
"She reminds me of Venkman sometimes. It's surprising they aren't attached at the hip."
He looks at Phoebe again, shaking his head a bit in some strange mix of concern and amusement.
"Mostly, though, she's just like you. Never looking before you leap. Her ambition exceeds her capabilities from time to time."
“Like the time she came up with the cure for cancer at 3 in the morning?” Phoebe chuckled. She remembered that day was such a delight, waking up at 3 to hear her daughter describe the “future cure for cancer” and go back to sleep, only to forget what she said the next morning.
He hummed.
"Yes, that. But mostly getting so ahead of herself in her ambition that she pushes her body pasts it's limit. She gets so motivated towards every new idea that she stands up too quickly and runs at every opportunity."
“Then faints before she gets the chance.” Pheebs sighed as Izzy came over and gave Egon and Phoebe a bowl of Cheezits before feeding one to the dog and running off to go play.
He gets out a quick "Thank you" before she runs off, then reaches in the bowl to eat a couple.
"You would think she would learn to be more mindful of it. But then again, I never particularly cared what I did to my body when I was young either."
He paused to eat another Cheezit.
"I tried to drill a hole in my head in college."
“It would’ve worked if Peter didn’t stop you, and I’m quite happy your here. Because then I wouldn’t be here and Izzy wouldn’t either. I think that the world is crap but seeing Izzy every day makes it better.” Phoebe said. “Plus mom and Trevor are decent.”
Egon smiled softly.
"I feel similarly about all of you. The papers said my greatest achievements were inventing the equipment we use and saving the world in the 80s, but I simply cannot put it above becoming a father. It's regrettable that I couldn't be there when your mother was young... but all the time I've gotten to spend with her in recent years, and all the time I've spent with you and your brother and Izzy, has almost made up for it."
Phoebe was about to say something when suddenly there was a soft thud from upstairs, followed by a “IM OKAY!” From Izzy. Phoebe sighed. “I think she tripped, that’s not a collapse-thud.”
Egon sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"You're all going to give me a heart attack."
“Sorry buddy,” Phoebe said as she went to go make dinner. Izzy came back down with her mushroom samples. “Old Man one and two need moisture.”
"Old Man one and two. Where do you come up with these names, Iz?"
He chuckled, inspecting the mushrooms. He wasn't the best at expressing it out loud, but he felt a sense of pride knowing Izzy took after him enough to share his hobbies. She wasn't half bad at it either.
I know what you did to that slime
The psychomagnotheric slime? Ray and I conducted experiments to determine it's origin and properties, I don't see the issue.
You slept with some slime Spengie, you’ve got to see what people find concerning with that whole thing.
Plus Venkman already bugs you enough about the whole not dating thingy.
How do you know that? Have you been going through my research files?
Nevermind. Doesn't matter. For the record, Venkman simply doesn't know about the dates I've been on. Why willingly give him more to big me about?
Maybe I have been going through some files but I was originally looking for something that I forgot about completely. Plus maybe Venkman will stop hitting on me if I gossip with him, although that’s highly unlikely. You need to get out of your lab more often Spengie.
I get out of the lab frequently. This morning I went to the park to observe the progress of a fungal colony I noticed on my last visit.
Well I’m trying o avoid Venkman’s constant flirting so you’re stuck with me bugging you for the time being. You are too stubborn for your own good sometimes Egon.
Is that what you think it is? I don't see myself as stubborn. I just don't see the point in seeking out other hobbies when I am perfectly happy where I am.
You need to get laid. Maybe that would help. Although I don’t mind keeping you company, as long as you keep Venkman away from me with his constant flirting.
It really hasn't been that long. Not that it's any of your business.
Keep Venkman away from me, and I’ll stay out of your business Spengie.
I'm not his mother. You could try a large object to the knee, that is always a safe bet.
Trust me, I’ve tried that. Plus I think I’ll just hang around you since he usually leaves you alone
He's in the lab with me today, actually. I'm not sure why. He just sat down.
That’s sure is surprising
It certainly is.
I got you a restock for your snack stash Spengie. You owe me
I'm... Babysitting. Enjoy your afternoon sans-Venkman.
Maybe take me to dinner and we’ll call each even Dr. Spengler
I will order you something when I get a minute away from my work, deal?
You’ll be eating as well Spengie. Plus you need to get out more. I know this cafe down the road.
I will not be. I'm working tonight and the rest of this week and this weekend I have a date. Results don't wait for me to have dinner, Miss Kane.
Ooo who’s the lucky lady? Also fine you have yourself a deal, as long as you eat something. How does Chinese food sound?
I will eat. I'll order it shortly.
The "lucky lady" is Dr. Edwards. A physicist I met at a field-specific convention in my time at Columbia. He wrote a very interesting paper on his theory about the existence of alternate dimensions, I believe we are going to discuss it.
//Also. Don't know if I mentioned this but. Egon's bisexual cause I said so.

Dr. Spengler seems to have fallen asleep sitting up, propped against a filing cabinet with his glasses slightly askew on his nose and a clipboard still loosely resting in his hand. It was slowly slipping out of his grip, moments away from clattering to the cold tile floor.
Wilbur entered the lab, approaching Dr. Spengler cautiously. He grabbed the clipboard before it could fall to the floor, he wasn't exactly a fan of loud noises. It shook Egon gently by the shoulder to try and wake him.
"Hey. Egon." He tried, seeing if that would get a response.
Egon blinked awake, dazed and confused from the position he was in. The shaking had caused his glasses to slide further down his nose, and he was now squinting at Wilbur over the top of the frames trying to figure out what was going on.
"What? Yes, sorry, what do you need?"
"No, I don't need anything. I just figured falling asleep here wasn't too comfortable and you'd wanna move." It accompanied the statement with a shrug.
He stood up and fixed his glasses, clearing his throat as he pulled himself back together.
"Pay it no mind. I'm awake now. What time is it?"
"I'm not entirely sure but I know it's getting late. And you really should sleep, you must be tired if you're falling asleep unexpectedly." He made eye contact with Egon for a very brief moment before looking off to the side again
He shook his head, beginning to shuffle around the lab again.
"I was just waiting for something. I can keep working now."
He flicked off a microscope that had been left on before, then picked up an erlenmeyer flask full of a mysterious substance and held it out to Wilbur.
"Would you see to it that this makes it's way into the lab refrigerator?"
Egon yawned. He could throw himself back into the work all he wanted, but there was no hiding the exhaustion behind his eyes.
"Egon." It tried again, doing its best to sound firm. "I don't think it's a good idea for you to carry on. Improper sleep really messes with your head and that probably won't help your experiments."
He took the mystery substance from Egon and went to put it away like Egon had asked him.
Egon sighed, scribbling something down on the paper attached to the clipboard he was holding previously before turning back to Wilbur. "I only need to finish some things up. It won't take very long."
"Fine. But I'm staying until you're done."
He sat down on the edge of a table. There were chairs in the room but it tended to favour the floor or other non-chair surfaces. He kicked his legs back and forth as he watched what Egon was doing.
Egon stayed standing, sighing as Wilbur sat down. "That is not necessary, but you can stay if you insist." He placed another dish in the machine and flipped a switch so it would start analyzing the sample. "You're insisting that I need rest, but you haven't explained why you're awake right now too."
Wilbur shrugged, its eyes drifting off to the side to avoid looking at Egon.
"Not tired. I've always had a messed up sleep schedule, I guess." He quickly looked for something to change the subject. "So, what are you working on?"
The science stuff tended to go over Wilbur's head but it liked listening to Egon.
He leaned against the table, watching the machine run.
"Testing these samples for selenium dioxide. There has been a small crop of ghosts crop up with traces of selenium dioxide in their ectoplasm. I'm looking for it to see if it's related. They don't appear to be a new classification, so it must be something else."
He nodded, trying to wrap his head around what Egon was saying.
"So, some of the ghosts have slightly different ectoplasm and you're trying to figure out why and what that means?" It really hoped it got that right, it hated looking like an idiot. Of course, hanging around with scientists obviously means that the people around him know a lot more than he does, but the point still stood.
Egon nodded.
"Correct. Standard ectoplasm is it's own compound. It's not that the ghosts have a different type of ectoplasm, their ectoplasm simply has selenium dioxide in it. Imagine if ectoplasm was instead water. Water is a compound on its own, two hydrogen bonded with one oxygen molecule. Ectoplasm is similar, it's made up of it's own components. The selenium dioxide is like mixing salt into water, the salt dissolves but it doesn't bind with the existing water compound. It is only inside of it. You can remove it without breaking any chemical bonds. That is what's happening with the selenium dioxide inside the ectoplasm."
"Oh. Okay, I get it now. Salt water ghosts." It laughed a little. "I mean...not literally salt water ghosts but you know."
He was smiling a bit more than when he'd first entered the lab. It tended to fluctuate between being very expressive to barely emoting at all and today had leaned more towards the latter.
"Yes. Something like that."
There was a faint, just barely noticeable upward turn at the corners of his lips; not quite a smile, but possibly indicative of amusement nonetheless.
"Do you want to see it? The slide is still on the microscope."
Wilbur nodded quickly. "Yeah, I do." He hopped down from the table and approached the microscope. "You know, I never really liked science at school but I always liked when we got to use the microscopes. Things look cool when you zoom in, I guess. I liked seeing the patterns."
It stopped rambling and leaned down to look through the eye piece of the microscope, only remembering to move its glasses out the way after they hit the lense.
There was a quiet chuckle from him when Wilbur bumped it's glasses on the lense, Egon had done that many times before himself.
"If you like microscopes you're free to use this one whenever you want. There are additional slides in one of the filing cabinet drawers."
Egon watched him peer into the microscope, curiosly awaiting his response. He found the contents of the slide to be pretty fascinating and he hoped Wilbur would too.
"Use the top knob for adjustment if it isn't in focus."
Wilbur didn't look up from the microscope to reply, honestly he was happy for an excuse not to look at someone's face.
"Really? I appreciate that but...well, I'm clumsy. Knowing me, I'd break something important and you guys would be mad at me and I'd never be allowed in the lab again." It forced a small laugh at the end of the sentence, mainly so it sounded more like a lighthearted joke than what it actually thought would happen.
"Only use the blue box, if you're concerned"
He paused, unsure if Wilbur was joking or not.
"There's nothing in there that's important anymore. And the microscope is nearly indestructible with normal use. You would have to do something very wrong to break it."
