Chapter 11: A Tangled Web
No sooner have things been put together than they start to fall apart.
âThe best way to learn how to cast convincing genjutsu is to experience a convincing genjutsu firsthand.â
She stands in the center of the training grounds, fresh off her second chunin examâa success, this timeâfeeling exceedingly uncertain. She hasnât seen Kakashi in six months; and if that werenât enough to create a little awkwardness they are here, together, only because she unloaded on him when he came to congratulate her two weeks late. While Kakashi stands seemingly at ease, hands tucked into his pockets and shoulders slouched, despite everything she knows him well enough to detect the very minor signs of discomfort: the tension in his neck, the slight furrow to his brow, the way his expression conveys just a little too much enthusiasm.
She sighs and rubs her brow. She canât learn an entirely new field of jutsu in the few weeks they have available with an elephant this big standing in the training grounds between them.
âLook, Kaka-sensei⊠if youâre only doing this because I yelled at you, donât bother..."

Sakura settles in the village despite the legendsâdespite the warnings, because famine and war sweep the land and she has been without a home for ten years, traveling and struggling simply to survive. She is granted a year of peace in a small village along the great Sugi forest; then one day he drifts out of the woods, the Ginpatsu of village myth, and claims her as his bride.
Chapter 5: Questions
Sakura tries to make sense of her situation.
The sound of owls hooting breaks through first. Then, the rustle of leaves on an evening breeze; the feeling of soft cotton on her skinâthe warmth of a light blanket protecting her from a cool evening breeze. She struggles to open her eyes, and once she does she finds herself in a large room. She recognizes it, though she hadnât been cogent enough to take in its details the first time sheâd awoken. It is elegant in its simplicity, traditionally styled, and sparsely furnished. A wall scroll hangs beside the bed depicting a cherry tree in full bloom alongside a river. A paper lantern sits atop a table beside the mattressâraised slightly, in the more modern fashion.
And across the room, leaning in the doorway of an open shoji screen gazing out at the moonlit night, stands her new husband. He wears a robe loosely tied around the waist, watching the stars beyond the Engawa, seemingly enraptured. She observes him silently, unsure what to say or do, her thoughts slow to rise from the depths of sleep. The events of the night gradually catch up with her the longer she watches himâwhat sheâs done, what has happened between them.

Chapter 3: Wedding
Sakura's fate is sealed
The night of the full moon arrives three days later.
Sakura has had to say goodbye many times in her life, but this time is by far the hardest. She has never stayed in one place so long, not since childhood. All of her life has been spent moving from town to city to village, bartering her skills for lodging or food or coin, barely staying one step ahead of trouble. Niwa has been the first place she might dare to call home.
She does what she can to finalize her affairs. She leaves her cottage to Tenten, so her friend can finally gain the distance she has long-needed from her over-bearing mother. She gives her supply of herbs and poultices to the Seamsterâs wife, the only other person in the village with any knowledge of the healing arts. She says a tearful goodbye to the villagers, hugging Tenten and Moegi tightly, and goes to the edge of the forest to await her fate.
Or, ratherâto see if she can yet change it. She may only be a humble healer, but Sakura has never been one to take her lot in life lying down.

Chapter 2: Niwa
Sakura is offered a home.
1 YEAR EARLIER
Her feet ache, her travel pack feels like a boulder on her back, and she smells of days-old sweat; but when at last she ambles up to the modest Inn she feels a surge of relief. The town is small and out of the wayâthe wars and skirmishes far from its borders, and the people seem open minded if the fact that they hadnât turned her away at the gate is any indication.
An elderly woman is busy behind the counter folding linens when Sakura walks up, leaning heavily against the wood as she gives the woman a tired smile and slaps her last handful of Ryo on the counter.
âOne room and a meal, please. And if you donât mind⊠do you know if thereâs an herbalist or healer here who might be interested in buying some medicinal herbs?â

Chapter 1: Chosen
Sakura didn't believe in superstitious myths...
Itâs the little things that tell Sakura her choice to settle in Niwa was the right one.
Itâs the way she makes fast friends with the blacksmithâs daughter Tenten, a spunky, high-spirited girl with a knack for the blade. Itâs the way her medicinal herbs grow so well in the garden she builds behind the cottage, the seeds sheâs spent years collecting on her travels finally taking root; the way she finds mushrooms growing in the forest barely a few minutes trek into the treelineâboth medicinal varieties and edible ones. Itâs the weather, and the way the Sugi cedars tower over the landscape, and the blue, blue sky stretching on forever over fields of wheat and sweet potatoes.
Once the summer weather sets in, inviting a relaxation and indolence she hasnât experienced since she was a childâand a host of villagers into her home with foolhardy injuriesâshe almost forgets about the village folklore, and the Ginpatsu supposedly living in the woods behind her house...

Chapter 3: Buttons
Their grand entrance goes well. Maybe too well.
It was nearly an hour after their grand entrance before Sakura and Kakashi had a chance to breathe.
They had been aiming for something impressive, of courseâstriving to show off both Fire Countryâs beautiful landscape and some of Konohaâs more unique jutsu. Sai was a pioneer in painting jutsu, reviving the ancient technique for the modern era; Sharingan genjutsu was incomparable and capable of a range and complexity otherwise unheard of; and of course, wood release was Konohaâs historical claim to fame. With a little creativity, theyâd managed to show off all three in riveting, artful fashion. Theyâd pulled it off flawlesslyâeach member of the team hitting their marks with precision and just the right amount of flourish.
The downside, however, was that everyone now wanted to meet the incredible pair of ninja (let them believe it was only a two person effort) who had turned the room into a magical fire country forest straight from the nationâs myths and legends.
And, of course, to ask how they did it.
âAh, we canât very well go giving away our secrets, now can we?â Kakashi had replied more than once, each time with the same indulgent pleasantry...

Chapter 3: Delusional
Kakashi and Sakura become friends--and Obito gets suspicious.
She wakes slowly, feeling groggy and sluggish despite the anxious thrum running through her limbs. She rolls over with a groan, blinking at her surroundings. Her seal has receded. Sunset is casting amber light through the windows, a green curtain fluttering in a breeze let in by a small crack in the pane. But these arenât her windows nor her curtains nor her bed.
She doesnât know where she is.
She sits upright with a start and stares around. She recognizes that sheâs in one of the shinobi housing apartments but doesnât recognize more than that. It is only a framed photo on the shelf behind the bed that clues her in: Minato Namikaze and his Genin team. She can immediately identify Obitoâand opposite him, what she can only guess is a young Kakashi, looking dour and self-serious. She huffs a laugh as she stares at his grumpy, youthful countenance. This must be his place.
When she flips her legs out of bed, she finds a note on the bedside table.
You passed out on the battlefield. Wasnât sure where to take youâhospitalâs full. Make yourself at home.
-K...

Their relationship doesn't start off on the best foot: she accidentally calls him an idiot. He quite intentionally calls her a psycho (and frankly, it's deserved, all things considered). But they find their way to each other anyway, little bits at a time.

Chapter 1: Bakashi
In which Sakura makes a bad first impression, and Kakashi follows suit.
âObito-sensei, whoâs that?â
Sakura points at the white-haired man heâd waved to in passing, now retreating down the street without so much as a glance in their direction. The man in question had an intimidating auraâall straight spine and hard eyes and business-like dispositionânot the type of person Sakura would have expected their goofy, lackadaisical sensei to be acquainted with.
Like Obito, he had a patch over one eye. Or rather, his hitai-ate was pulled down to cover itâthe same eye that Obito kept covered. But unlike Obito, on whom the look seemed kind of silly, on this man it looked⊠kind of cool.
âOh, him?â Obito snorts. âThatâs Bakashi, my old teammate.â
Her brow furrows.
ââŠBakashi?â
âYeah. Hes an ANBU agentâin case you were wondering why he canât be bothered to say hi. Anti-social, the lot of âem. But⊠heâs alright, I guess.â
Sakura doesnât miss the way his eyes soften and his tone gentles despite his callous words. Begrudging friends, perhaps?
âHis eye patch is cooler than yours.â
Naruto makes a sudden appearance, leaping down from a nearby rooftop, finger in one ear as he digs around for earwax. Sakura crinkles her nose.
âOi! Take that back you little gremlin!â Obito barks...

Chapter 2: Stars of the Show
Konoha makes its grand entrance.
Though he was the Hokageâs most trusted advisor and the next clan head of the Nara, Shikamaru was otherwise an individual of little noteâat least as far as the Daimyo and nobility of the five great nations were concerned. As such, he managed to wriggle his way out of participating in the formal entrance of the Gala, instead milling amongst the nobility in the grand ballroom as he awaited the ringing of the gong, when the herald would announce each of the notable personages as they descended the stairs.
Glancing around the room, he was glad he had taken Inoâs advice on what to wearâthis really was little more than an excuse for the nobility to gather and show off. He canât remember a time he saw more fancy dresses, suits, formal kimonoâs, and diamond necklaces in one place.
As the host country, the land of fire would go lastâthe âbest for lastâ as the Daimyo had said at dinner, laughing with the self-assuredness only those at such distant remove from reality could manage. And so when the gong rang, it was the Daimyo of Wind Country the herald read off first. He and his wife descended the grand staircase wearing lavish traditional attire, to murmurs and polite claps from those in attendance. However, no sooner had they reached the floor than a breeze began to rustle through the gathered crowd. The wind picked up, creating little dust devils at the top of the stairs. A few of the nobility began to murmur in alarm; but just as quickly as the wind came, it wentâand as each dust devils dissipated, a person appeared. Then anotherâand another...

Chapter 10: Complications
The time comes for Sakura to make her proposal to the Konoha Council.
The walk to Hokage tower is a peaceful one; the sun is bright but not over-warm, the streets she traverses are familiar and nostalgic. She is able to lose herself in memory and childhood comfort for a short while; However, as soon as she reaches Hokage tower her temporary calm is pierced by nerves which begin to writhe like worms in her gut. The circular red building looms large and foreboding above her, a physical manifestation of the tremendous task in whose shadow she now stands.
Two shinobi on duty flanking the double doors eye her sharply as she approaches. She does her best to smile as she nods her greeting to each, then pushes through the doors and up the stairs, clutching her proposal tightly to her chest.
This would work. It had to work.
She heads for meeting room twoâthe location specified by the Sandaime in his missive a week prior. She easily navigates the narrow, winding hallways of the old tower by childhood memory, and comes to a stop before a worn wooden door whose placard is slid to the left to read âIn Useâ. She closes her eyes, takes a deep and steadying breath. Sheâs done this before, with the Childrenâs hospital; and back then sheâd had a post-war penny-pinching Daimyo in attendance. Sheâd nailed her presentation then and sheâd do the same now, securing her access to the library and, ultimately, a way back home to the future.
Resolved, she opens the door and steps determinedly inside.
The Council is sitting on the far side of the room behind a long table, the Hokage second from the left, flanked by Danzo and Homura. She tries not to focus on how much younger they all appearâthe fact that Danzo is still alive at all, and instead makes her way before the table, bowing politely...
