Chapter 3: Delusional
Kakashi and Sakura become friends--and Obito gets suspicious.
She wakes slowly, feeling groggy and sluggish despite the anxious thrum running through her limbs. She rolls over with a groan, blinking at her surroundings. Her seal has receded. Sunset is casting amber light through the windows, a green curtain fluttering in a breeze let in by a small crack in the pane. But these aren’t her windows nor her curtains nor her bed.
She doesn’t know where she is.
She sits upright with a start and stares around. She recognizes that she’s in one of the shinobi housing apartments but doesn’t recognize more than that. It is only a framed photo on the shelf behind the bed that clues her in: Minato Namikaze and his Genin team. She can immediately identify Obito—and opposite him, what she can only guess is a young Kakashi, looking dour and self-serious. She huffs a laugh as she stares at his grumpy, youthful countenance. This must be his place.
When she flips her legs out of bed, she finds a note on the bedside table.
You passed out on the battlefield. Wasn’t sure where to take you—hospital’s full. Make yourself at home.

Their relationship doesn't start off on the best foot: she accidentally calls him an idiot. He quite intentionally calls her a psycho (and frankly, it's deserved, all things considered). But they find their way to each other anyway, little bits at a time.

Chapter 1: Bakashi
In which Sakura makes a bad first impression, and Kakashi follows suit.
“Obito-sensei, who’s that?”
Sakura points at the white-haired man he’d waved to in passing, now retreating down the street without so much as a glance in their direction. The man in question had an intimidating aura—all straight spine and hard eyes and business-like disposition—not the type of person Sakura would have expected their goofy, lackadaisical sensei to be acquainted with.
Like Obito, he had a patch over one eye. Or rather, his hitai-ate was pulled down to cover it—the same eye that Obito kept covered. But unlike Obito, on whom the look seemed kind of silly, on this man it looked… kind of cool.
“Oh, him?” Obito snorts. “That’s Bakashi, my old teammate.”
Her brow furrows.
“…Bakashi?”
“Yeah. Hes an ANBU agent—in case you were wondering why he can’t be bothered to say hi. Anti-social, the lot of ‘em. But… he’s alright, I guess.”
Sakura doesn’t miss the way his eyes soften and his tone gentles despite his callous words. Begrudging friends, perhaps?
“His eye patch is cooler than yours.”
Naruto makes a sudden appearance, leaping down from a nearby rooftop, finger in one ear as he digs around for earwax. Sakura crinkles her nose.
“Oi! Take that back you little gremlin!” Obito barks...

Chapter 2: Stars of the Show
Konoha makes its grand entrance.
Though he was the Hokage’s most trusted advisor and the next clan head of the Nara, Shikamaru was otherwise an individual of little note—at least as far as the Daimyo and nobility of the five great nations were concerned. As such, he managed to wriggle his way out of participating in the formal entrance of the Gala, instead milling amongst the nobility in the grand ballroom as he awaited the ringing of the gong, when the herald would announce each of the notable personages as they descended the stairs.
Glancing around the room, he was glad he had taken Ino’s advice on what to wear—this really was little more than an excuse for the nobility to gather and show off. He can’t remember a time he saw more fancy dresses, suits, formal kimono’s, and diamond necklaces in one place.
As the host country, the land of fire would go last—the ‘best for last’ as the Daimyo had said at dinner, laughing with the self-assuredness only those at such distant remove from reality could manage. And so when the gong rang, it was the Daimyo of Wind Country the herald read off first. He and his wife descended the grand staircase wearing lavish traditional attire, to murmurs and polite claps from those in attendance. However, no sooner had they reached the floor than a breeze began to rustle through the gathered crowd. The wind picked up, creating little dust devils at the top of the stairs. A few of the nobility began to murmur in alarm; but just as quickly as the wind came, it went—and as each dust devils dissipated, a person appeared. Then another—and another...

Chapter 3: Buttons
Their grand entrance goes well. Maybe too well.
It was nearly an hour after their grand entrance before Sakura and Kakashi had a chance to breathe.
They had been aiming for something impressive, of course—striving to show off both Fire Country’s beautiful landscape and some of Konoha’s more unique jutsu. Sai was a pioneer in painting jutsu, reviving the ancient technique for the modern era; Sharingan genjutsu was incomparable and capable of a range and complexity otherwise unheard of; and of course, wood release was Konoha’s historical claim to fame. With a little creativity, they’d managed to show off all three in riveting, artful fashion. They’d pulled it off flawlessly—each member of the team hitting their marks with precision and just the right amount of flourish.
The downside, however, was that everyone now wanted to meet the incredible pair of ninja (let them believe it was only a two person effort) who had turned the room into a magical fire country forest straight from the nation’s myths and legends.
And, of course, to ask how they did it.
“Ah, we can’t very well go giving away our secrets, now can we?” Kakashi had replied more than once, each time with the same indulgent pleasantry...

Chapter 10: Complications
The time comes for Sakura to make her proposal to the Konoha Council.
The walk to Hokage tower is a peaceful one; the sun is bright but not over-warm, the streets she traverses are familiar and nostalgic. She is able to lose herself in memory and childhood comfort for a short while; However, as soon as she reaches Hokage tower her temporary calm is pierced by nerves which begin to writhe like worms in her gut. The circular red building looms large and foreboding above her, a physical manifestation of the tremendous task in whose shadow she now stands.
Two shinobi on duty flanking the double doors eye her sharply as she approaches. She does her best to smile as she nods her greeting to each, then pushes through the doors and up the stairs, clutching her proposal tightly to her chest.
This would work. It had to work.
She heads for meeting room two—the location specified by the Sandaime in his missive a week prior. She easily navigates the narrow, winding hallways of the old tower by childhood memory, and comes to a stop before a worn wooden door whose placard is slid to the left to read “In Use”. She closes her eyes, takes a deep and steadying breath. She’s done this before, with the Children’s hospital; and back then she’d had a post-war penny-pinching Daimyo in attendance. She’d nailed her presentation then and she’d do the same now, securing her access to the library and, ultimately, a way back home to the future.
Resolved, she opens the door and steps determinedly inside.
The Council is sitting on the far side of the room behind a long table, the Hokage second from the left, flanked by Danzo and Homura. She tries not to focus on how much younger they all appear—the fact that Danzo is still alive at all, and instead makes her way before the table, bowing politely...

Chapter 11: A Tangled Web
No sooner have things been put together than they start to fall apart.
“The best way to learn how to cast convincing genjutsu is to experience a convincing genjutsu firsthand.”
She stands in the center of the training grounds, fresh off her second chunin exam—a success, this time—feeling exceedingly uncertain. She hasn’t seen Kakashi in six months; and if that weren’t enough to create a little awkwardness they are here, together, only because she unloaded on him when he came to congratulate her two weeks late. While Kakashi stands seemingly at ease, hands tucked into his pockets and shoulders slouched, despite everything she knows him well enough to detect the very minor signs of discomfort: the tension in his neck, the slight furrow to his brow, the way his expression conveys just a little too much enthusiasm.
She sighs and rubs her brow. She can’t learn an entirely new field of jutsu in the few weeks they have available with an elephant this big standing in the training grounds between them.
“Look, Kaka-sensei… if you’re only doing this because I yelled at you, don’t bother..."

“Stop pushing, or you’ll shove us both out of the tree!”
“You know, Doctor Haruno is likely to hear us if you two don’t keep your mouths shut,” Sai interjects breezily from beside them.
“Shut up, Sai!”
Both Naruto and Sasuke swivel in unison glaring daggers at their teammate. All three are lined up along a small tree branch overhanging the Medical Director’s office—camouflaged by leaves and bathed in shade, providing a convenient vantage from which to spy. However their tail of Doctor Haruno had thus far yielded little material. Aside from learning from a conversation with Kurenai that she had recently returned to Konoha after a long period away, her day had mostly been spent sitting at her desk doing paperwork.
Sai rather suspects Naruto had been hoping to see her use more of her “Doctor Ninja Magic”, as he calls it.
As they resettle into a more equally distributed placement along the branch, Naruto sighs.
There's a new medical director in Konoha: an old familiar face Kakashi hasn't seen in over a decade. She's haunted his dreams, and he's been held in her heart like a fragile keepsake, both waiting for a day when the tide finally turns. Her return to Konoha is a chance to reconnect, and rekindle memories from a time--and a team, long since past. But their wounds are old and aching; they're bound to step on each others toes as they find their footing again, after so many years.
Kakashi/Sakura same age AU
Chapter 1: Doctor Haruno
Naruto is bed-bound and he hates it, though at least Sai makes the antiseptic hospital smell and stiff, cold sheets slightly more worthwhile. Unlike Naruto and Sasuke, Sai did not suffer the same extent of injuries, and was released from the hospital after mere hours; but has come by regularly anyway, for seemingly no other reason than to harass all three of them about their “careless” injuries and “slow” recovery time. While he’s no particular fan of Sai’s irritating smugness, he can’t help but enjoy how aggravated it makes Sasuke in particular, trapped in bed by his fractured ankle and broken toe.
Naruto is reaching for a freshly cut wedge of apple from the bowl a nurse brought in earlier when Sai, after complaining for the third time about how smelly Sasuke’s ankle wrap is, moves to pull aside Kakashi’s privacy curtain to open the window; then pauses, staring at their sensei with a frown.
“You are in a public space, sensei. There could be children about. Have you no shame?”

Chapter 2: Haruno Fucking Sakura
Kakashi gets a chance to better know the Haruno Fucking Sakura.
“Your student is a psycho.”
Kakashi sits with Obito along the Konoha river front. It’s a warm spring day, days away from the start of the Chunin exams, and Kakashi has a rare break between security briefings and training exercises. They’re taking extra care this year, and though no one has said it outright Kakashi’s not a fool: the higher-up’s have intelligence suggesting there may be dirty dealings afoot this year.
Obito sighs.
“I know Sasuke is a bit much, but you have to bear in mind he watched members of his own clan kill his brother right in front of him when he was only—“
“Not him,” he scoffs. “The pink haired one. Haruno fucking Sakura,” he quotes with distaste.
Obito grins.
“Oh. Her! She’s great.”...

Shizune approaches her with a simple proposal, which of course, turns out not to be simple at all.
She was twenty one by the time she and Kakashi actually talked about the kiss they’d shared after the war, though the delay was only partly due to avoidance.
Time flew by after the war. Kakashi was inaugurated as the Rokudaime Hokage. Sakura became the director of Konoha hospital. Naruto traveled between the villages as the Ninja world’s first and most respected ambassador. After a lengthy probation period (and countless oaths sworn to the village), Sasuke was permitted to join ANBU and serve Konoha once more.
And Sakura had her heart broken.
Not that it was Sasuke’s fault. How was she to know he was gay? He hadn’t known—at least not until his and Naruto’s long reconciliatory talks in his prison cell beneath T&I resulted in a sloppy make out session and a heart-to-heart about the nature of their feelings for one another. Turned out there was a lot more to his defection from Konoha than just trying to enact his vengeance. He was running from himself, too...

I do have a Patreon update this week for this past Friday, I just didn’t get a chance to post it in time. It’s a good one! Hopefully I’ll get to it this evening? Maybe tomorrow afternoon. My schedule is crazy rn.
It’s a new, complete, (shorter) multi-chapter story from my WIPs folder, in my continuing effort to finish old content.
“Psycho”
Romance, humor, fun AU setting. Kakasaku, T.
Obito survives the 3rd war, saved by Tsunade instead of Madara, who heals and helps train him before returning him to Konoha. Minato lives, and Konoha experiences an era of peace. Obito trains team 7 while Kakashi remains in ANBU, eventually becoming ANBU commander.
I loved Obito’s kind of unhinged personality as Tobi and wanted to explore that a bit—so in this AU he’s kind of a lovable nutjob after the horrors he experienced in the 3rd war.
Under the tutelage of both Obito and Tsunade, Sakura also grows to become kind of unhinged (affectionate), and it is this very behavior that leads Kakashi, after a series of unfortunate first encounters, to befriend and ultimately fall in love with her.
It's Shizune's fault. And maybe Ino's. She should have known she'd be in for nothing but trouble getting involved in postwar politics—even if those politics amounted to little more than fancy dress and non-traditional applications of ninjutsu.
