Scene background: Daniel LaRusso moves to the Valley from New Jersey and shows up to West Valley High School Baseball try-outs. Johnny Lawrence, superstar pitcher, is starting his senior year in a slump, after his best friend Bobby Brown is injured in a plate collision during the Spring 1984 Cali State Championship. Johnny isn’t happy to see the New Jersey transplant attempt to fill Bobby’s shoes. 

After a month of practice, the West Valley Cougars aren’t making it easy on Daniel. He gets jumped after practice, beat up, and locked in an equipment locker. 

It’s late at night and Lucille is worried when she doesn’t hear from her son, and she calls Johnny only because she thinks he’s Daniel’s friend. In truth Johnny’s been reluctant to hang out with Daniel, but they have to work together as pitcher and catcher.  She asks Johnny is he knows where Daniel is. He calms her down and says, “I’ll go check the field. He’s a baseball player, where else could he be?”
