Okay, so I know this is primarily a Spider-Man blog, but I feel like I need to get this off my chest and rant a little about the stupidity of Marvel writers. I think Nightcrawler's new origin is dumb and overly convoluted.
I mean I get it, the original writer years ago for Nightcrawler's origin wanted to have him be Mystique and Destiny's baby. And it wasn't given the green light due to how people at the time viewed writing about same sex couples. And I know that its different now, which is a good thing. But adding this on top of years of established backstory just bungles it up.
For all those new to the comics and don't understand, in the original backstory, Nightcrawler was born from Mystique marrying a rich man, and living a good cozy life with him. When she got pregnant, all that came to a crashing hault when Nightcrawler was born as a blue fuzzy demon, which also revealed Mystique to also be a mutant. So she ran off with baby Nightcrawler into cold winter night, and I think either lost him or gave him up to keep him safe.
Later on, it was stated that Mystique had an affair with Azaezel, a demonic mutant who ruled the brimstone dimension, and looked like a red nightcrawler. Nightcrawler was born to this affair, and along with the fallout with the baron, Azaezel wanted to use his many children to create a portal for him to fully escape his imprisonment to take over the world, so Mystique gave him up and hid him to keep him safe.
But now, with this new origin, it states Mystique instead shapeshifted into Azaezel, changing at the genetic level to match Azaezel's genes, to get Destiny pregnant. All because she foresaw that a child Azaezel assumes is his would be his undoing which is really dumb.
So, not only did Mystique needlessly get run off by her husband, but she and Destiny also gave Nightcrawler up because... reasons? Look, I'm all for writing a lesbian couple. But do we really need to over complicate things doing so? They can still be lovers without turning Nightcrawler's origin into this whole overly complicated custody battle of who is the father.
