The marchil tag is peppered with posts from people who don't get it, and it's all just them looking for other people to agree with their bad faith "ermmm is anyone else seeing this ://" bullshit takes. There are TOO MANY of you to block. How can I curate my experience like this.
i have to piss someone off so badly that they snap and do something to me that is so bad that they scare themselves. please
people say sam is ungrateful and had a great childhood but even the magical being posing as his imaginary friend was like girl i’m bored we should run away and go to social services
why would you show up
What if the long walk was actually the friendship walk and all 50 of you had to reach 300 miles and not lose a single person :) and if you left anyone behind they would shoot all of you
"this show is for the freaks" you could not handle a chunky stoner poc who works for pennies delivering pizzas and has only one true friend
idgaf about stonathan bring back JARGYLE
you are not even engaging in the deep meanings of Toys youre just playing because it's fun.
Makes me laugh when stebbins says "there's no way any three humans can measure exactness like these instruments, they have it down to a science" This is a wartorn usa with little to no industry, how much do you want to bet that these are just regular pedometers. not exactly tech giants are we.
Long walk livestream logistics: was there sound? My guess is no, only because there's no way someone was sitting there choosing which convos to pick out/switch between, even if there was a slight delay between the actual walk and the televised broadcast. Also there is potential for seditious talk amongst the boys which the government wouldn't want airing without prior vetting. Maybe it's a silent broadcast with narration? Like football commentary... There's probably a documentary released after every walk with the best-of footage.
Another question - do they cut away during the deaths? I am leaning towards maybe, because lingering on scenes of death and destruction does not have that "have heart nut up and get patriotic NOW" thing the long walk seems to be going for? Or is the point that everyone is so desperate that they sign up anyway, even after seeing everyone die
Anyways back to the original point I just don't think in-universe america has the tech and manpower to focus on the individual walkers/the relationships and the drama. I also don't think the government would waste time/resources trying to drum up interest like that, because in a country under heavy censorship and starved for entertainment they're all in survival mode and don't have like. The Sopranos as a baseline for what good televised entertainment is supposed to look like, so the government relies on novelty and state loyalty and patriotic feeling to draw viewership and they're right because everyone watches.
Maybe the most they do in terms of individuating the walkers is release a flyer when the annual walk is announced with the walkers' pictures names and numbers. I can imagine girls cutting out pictures of their state reps and decorating them with duct tape grocery stickers and nutrition labels. Life finds a way.
At the risk of wading into the dreaded Discourse—
I think some folk need to reframe how they think of interacting with fandom. I’ve recently noticed an uptick of people in comments on fics/posts on Tumblr who seem to be fundamentally misunderstanding how this works.
To me, fandom is a potluck. Everyone has seen The Thing, got inspired, made something to eat, and shown up at the party. We all brought something to the table.
Maybe a bunch of us brought something similar that’s super popular, like chocolate. Some people made chocolate cakes, some people made chocolate chip cookies, some people made lovely little hand-fashioned chocolate candies, etc. You get the idea. And a lot of folks are hanging around the chocolate table because, hey, FREE chocolate! Hell yeah!
The problem I’m seeing is a nonzero amount of people walking up to the chocolate table and going: “WHY is chocolate so popular? I HATE chocolate! I HATE how popular it is and how EVERYONE brought chocolate! Why does nobody ever make caramel?”
Which is weird because, again, this is a potluck. There are definitely still non-chocolate items at this meal that you could be trying right now. Some of them are even caramel. But also you’re walking up to people who made what they liked and getting mad it isn’t created with you in mind.
Then when someone says, “Hey, I like caramel too, did YOU bring any?” The person complaining always says, “Oh, no. I make a lot of caramel at home but I never bring it to these type of things.”
Well, that’s the problem, bud. This isn’t a restaurant. You don’t get to sit and imagine your ideal Fan Content, then demand it from people. And it’s a little annoying when every third post in the tag is someone complaining about a creative lack they could be solving themselves.
The only way to ensure the thing you like will be at the table is to make it yourself OR aggressively support/encourage the people who brought what you liked so that next time they’ll bring more.
Fandom is about community, creativity, and being inspired by other folks interpretation of something we all enjoy. Maybe instead of walking into someone else’s work or a specific tag to complain about how much you dislike it, you direct that desire/energy at your own creative pursuits?
“But I’m bad at making caramel!” You’ll get better. Everyone burns the first few batches.
“But everyone’s too busy looking at chocolate to even notice my caramel!” I promise you, there are always going to be people you who dislike/hate/simply don’t care for chocolate. I’m sure they, like you, would love to see more caramel, or any number of flavors you can think up.
“What if nobody likes it?” YOU like caramel, my friend! YOU will like it!!! That is what’s most important! Do you think I made all these chocolate cupcakes just to watch everyone else eat them? It’s always fun to share, but if I’m making cupcakes, it’s because I want a cupcake.
Have fun, bring what you want, it’s a potluck!!! I promise you someone will eat whatever you bring, but please stop loudly complaining about the food, especially if you’re not going to contribute.
REAL SHIT!!!
