If you pay close attention to all the DHMIS episodes, you may have noticed something from the start: Each of the characters seem to have a very specific type of trauma done to them, splitting into three main categories of torture: Physical (body), psychological/existential (mind), and emotional (soul).

Bird is physical, meaning that he goes through the most body horror and pain. He rots much more severely than the other puppets in 2, loosing both his eye and his arm. In the Kickstarter, he loses his eye again, the most sensitive body part out of the three taken, and his beak is duct-taped shut. His glitching is much more extreme than Yellow’s or Red’s in 4, and he’s the only one to react to Colin saying Time - a reference to the episode that ends with severe body horror. And in 5, his episode, he gets his organs ripped out as he’s eaten alive in one of the goriest scenes in the entire series. He’s also possibly the only character to have been truly killed off.

Red’s psychological/existential and a bit more subtle than the others, but he has a knack for experiencing things that would make one question their reality. In 1, the episode that ends with everyone losing their minds, he’s the only puppet to not change during the sequence. He’s the one forced to read the letter from their kidnapper, and he’s the first of the trio to realize that something’s horribly wrong. This comes to a head (no pun intended) with him seeing a low-budget version of the show being taped, complete with the implication that their words and actions are being controlled by something else. He ends up in a different reality entirely at the end, alone to explore whatever’s out there.

Yellow is emotional, not suffering as much physically or mentally compared to the others but constantly enduring trauma after trauma. Sketchbook berates him and ruins his clown painting in 1, and Tony actively screams at him just for asking a question in 2. In the Kickstarter, he has a bag placed over his head while screaming that he “doesn’t like it“. In his own episode, Shrignold constantly manipulates him, making him feel worthless and alone because he doesn’t have a Special One, along with the implications of the caterpillar at the end. Finally, one of his friends outright disappears and he’s forced to eat the other one, leaving him completely alone for whatever awaits him in 6.

It’s also worth noting that episode 3 is emotional trauma, episode 4 is psychological trauma, and episode 5 is physical trauma, matching up with which one of the trio the episode focuses on. On top of that, 1 ends with psychological trauma and 2 ends with physical trauma - leaving 6, the episode where Yellow is completely alone, to end with emotional trauma.

Lo and behold, these same patterns are upheld in 6:

Yellow goes through a bit of physical pain (drowning in oil), but the main focus is on all of his friends being gone, something which he actively cries about that is also exploited by the teachers. (”And you can have a dream about losing your friends!”) He gets further emotional trauma towards the end of the episode, when not only do his old abusers all come back, but one of his friends comes back for a split second only to disappear again. At the end of the episode, the child is sobbing and looks to be having a complete mental breakdown.

Bird only appears for a moment before glitching into someone else. However, unlike most of the teachers, who glitch in one piece and transform smoothly, Bird glitches violently, leaving only his eyes and beak in place for a few seconds while he screams in confusion.

Finally, Red Guy is not only still stuck outside the DHMIS World, but he’s the one who discovers the truth - that the entire thing is nothing but a television program controlled by Roy, and that their entire reality is fake. He’s also the one to pull the plug and reset the machine - causing everything to start all over again.
