Francine Rukavina, former Queen of Monsters

Didn't realize how much I missed her until I started redesigning ❤️‍🩹

Francine comes from a long line of chosen vessels to powerful elemental spirits. Hers is one of rock and bark, inherited from her father after he stepped down as King to make way for her reign.

She spent her whole life training and preparing to rule, and didn't take her responsibilities lightly. As Guardian of the Supernatural, her duty was to keep monsterkind safe and thriving; humankind be damned. Unfortunately, this inevitably led to The Colossus War; a tedious and bloody conflict that she'd spend majority of her reign trying to end.

War wasn't something she wanted to pursue or took pleasure in, but battle and strategy were second nature to her. She hated to admit it, but she was in her element, just as her father had taught her to be. With all of her focus spent on governing and commanding her army, she found it difficult to be vulnerable enough with others to make friends; only a few in her inner circle were ever able to see her smile.

Francine did have a crush on Amylla for a time, but between the War itself and Amylla's unpredictable antics with Warren, she never fully allowed herself to indulge. It would've been too irresponsible to have feelings for someone who broke the laws she'd put in place. Her duty had to come first, every time.

The Stoplight Trio Fill out a Survey

Used the tried and true 'ship chart' as a fun exercise to figure out character dynamics and how they view themselves. More details/fun facts under the cut!

Jak L. and Kennedy are childhood friends! They bonded over their respective familal curses and have been close ever since. While their friendship is occasionally flirtatious, Kennedy struggles to keep his crush hidden from Jak; he fears that if he confesses and she doesn't feel the same, it will ruin their friendship forever.

Kennedy and Bambi are practically siblings. He met her on her first solo trip to Arundale, later introducing her to Jak L. when she needed help on one of her uncle's quests. Kennedy came to regret it as Bambi is a lot more forward about her feelings towards Jak than he is. She often teases him about his "secret" and he does his best to sabotage her advances.

Though mildly aware of her friends' feelings for her, Jak's reluctant to actually address them and never takes things further than playful banter. "Real" love is a heavy and sore subject for her, she'd much rather keep her relationships light and platonic. At least for now.

Despite only being a year younger, Bambi often feels out of her depth when hanging out with Kennedy and Jak L. They're rebellious and savvy to magic and charms she's never even heard of before. An unfortunate downside to being homeschooled by two parents who can't read.

Romantic entanglements aside, all three are still very good friends! Though only time will tell if their bonds can withstand the fallout of the secrets they're hiding from each other...

Native Tongues

Jek have a more gutteral tone with short, sharp sounds - similar to koala growls & howler monkey calls

Neffari develop & learn speech based on the species they imitate, so their vocal range is fairly wide! Thanks to their powerful psychic abilities, even the most obscure of sounds can be correctly interpreted - as long as their intent is focused

(Re)Meet Dead Wood's endling shapeshifters & nightmare eaters!

Though horrifying creatures with nightmarish abilities, many Jek were mostly nonviolent. They would enter your dreams, turning them to nightmares by shifting into your worst fear (or whichever one they found most delicious)

Popular myth suggests those plagued by phobias had caught the 'eye' of a Jek - that person would be banished until the feeding period was over (could last from 1 week to 1 month if a Jek took a liking to your terror.

While not setting out to kill, their nightmares could and often did drive their victims to madness. Beating a Jek is beating fear itself, most could recover - as long as their fear wasn't good enough to make the beast come back.

But most Jek are long gone now. Walt, Iniko, and Bambi are all that remain of the ancient species, the old ways long forgotten but their instincts still loud and clear. If they can't find a way to trust each other, they may end up just like their ancestors
