A Short Short Story
I wrote down a quick story that had been floating around my brain for a good while. I wrote it down on the notes in my phone but I figured this was a better place for it to live. As I said, this was very quick, based off of a dream I had actually, so please pardon any spelling errors or grammar mistakes.
The hybsil had been fighting the creatures of darkness since the beginning of their creation. Goodness and honor could be found flowing through each of their veins at birth. At a very young age they would be taught everything there was to know about the balance between light and dark. It was the job of the hybsil to keep the darkness from becoming too powerful. As with all magic, it was taught with caution and respect. Too much or too little of either would cause a catastrophic imbalance in the universe. Each hybsil contains within their hearts their life's energy. As a hybsil grows, its energy changes. The more pure a hybsil is the more light its energy can contain. A fully pure hybsil, even as close to the light as they already are, is extremely rare and extremely powerful.
Deep within the forest is where the hybsil call their home. But every once in a while they would find a scourge of dark crawlers attempting to take over their lands. The hybsil's best trained warriors could easily chase out the darkness. As years passed it was becoming increasingly difficult to push the darkness out. One by one, casualties during raids were becoming commonplace. The darkness was growing stronger. The hybsil knew they were going to have to grow stronger themselves.
A young hybsil named Aeleora felt great pain and sadness at the loss of her kind so she took it upon herself to become the most pure that she could. She studied light magic every day and did everything she could to assist her village. She slowly became the most loved hybsil from all of her good deeds. She caught the eye of many males looking for the perfect mate. A heart as pure as hers would breed a strong and healthy offspring for sure. But her mind was elsewhere. She had to focus on growing her light energy so that she could fight back the darkness from hurting the hybsil any longer.
One male in particular, Fennelis, had noted her dedication to her art and did not bother her with his love for her. He was saddened to know that she may never notice him but his love over shadowed nearly all of his selfishness. He knew she was fighting for something she truly believed in, something they all truly believed in, and he admired her greatly for that. So he sat back and watched. He knew in his heart that he could never be as pure as she, nor could he fight as well as she, but he, as well as the rest of the village, supported her in every way they could. She was growing stronger every day. Her energy was even beginning to sparkle and glow silver around her.
During one night a raid of dark crawlers were accompanied by an army of void reavers. This was not a good sign. The darkness had grown stronger yet, right under their noses. Aeleora was awake well before the others, the dark energy pulling and tearing at her light. She ran through the town as fast as she could to reach the bell tower and sounded the invasion alarm. With the rest of the town awake she would be able to fight along them, their energies working together to push back the darkness. Aeleora did not grow tired. Her magic was strong and the darkness feared her. She was able to assist many of the towns members to safety. Those who were trained to fight, fought alongside her, while the others lent her as much of their light as they could, concentrating intently on giving Aeleora their power.
Fennelis fought the best he could. He was not a strong fighter but he had his eye on Aeleora's back. His heart pounding furiously. He would protect her to his last breath if he had to. Suddenly even hybsil felt it. The greatest darkness to ever encroach upon their lands. The abyss lord himself. The towering entity, slowly made its way through the forest, covering everything it touched in shadow and heavy darkness. It was becoming increasingly difficult to breathe, like every life energy was slowly making its way out of each hybsil. But Aeleora had been training. She could feel her energy beginning to well up inside of her. She had to fight back the darkness.
With a mighty call, she began charging towards the abyss lord, her magic arrows piercing the darkness like fireflies in the night woods. The abyss lord began to reach out towards Aeleora, its hand stretching out to grab her. Fennelis's heart pushed him forward. He had to get to her. He could not let the darkness take her. So he ran. But he was too late. Aeleora shone brightly right before the darkness covered her. Her body could hardly be seen through the bright light, like that of the sun, that was escaping her body. Fennelis had to shield his eyes but he did not stop running towards her. He cried out for her as he watched the darkness drop her lifeless body to the ground. She silver shine was gone, replaced now with a dark fog. All the light had left her. She was only her darkness now, and very little at that.
The abyss lord was stunned by Aeleora's final attack and was now trying to regain its composure. Fennelis knelt by her body. She was barely breathing. A single tear left his eye. Even though she had lost her light, even her darkness was beautiful. He whispered to her, "I had always wanted to give you this when the time was right..." He plunged his hands inside of his chest. The pain was unbelievable. He reached for his energy, tears now streaming down his face. Heat was washing over him, an electric burning was consuming his body, every nerve wanted to shout out. He ripped his energy free from himself and delivered it to Aeleora. He pushed the small glowing ball into her chest. Her body began to shift from dark to light. As it did so, Fennelis's vision began to fade. Aeleora blinked her eyes up at him. Bright beautiful eyes. She looked confused and shocked and surprised all at once. Then as she began to get to her feet she turned to the darkness who was slowly recovering from the powerful attack. She looked back at the hybsil who had just revived her and she knew it all. Fennelis became light headed and then everything was gone.
