Days 3-5
Oh goodness. How awful of me to miss so many days in a row, but please forgive me as I have been so busy and early to bed.
Day three was a crazy day as it was the day the girls started arriving on site. I helped at gate 2 by stapling hundreds of foam animals to our welcome board. I did this till lunch and again all afternoon .
Day 2
Hello all! It's midnight and I am all tucked into my warm bed, hoping for sleep. It's cold enough for me to see my breath so I caved and wore a toque. It was a nice relaxed day for me on site. Woke up at 7am and meandered over for some breakfast (eggo, sausage patty and grapes) before heading to International. We spent the morning setting up tables and decorating as much as we could. We also did prep for our crafts. Lunch was make your own sandwiches and homemade veggie soup. After lunch, more prep before we headed out to help at Admin, sorting and labeling fire extinguishers. I seem to be fighting allergies of some kind and had a headache most of the day. Dinner was baked potatoes (I added sausage crumble, cheese and salsa, with salad) and I skipped dessert. We had an awesome evening, a quick outing to a local lake (Tyhee??) which wasn't as cold as I thought it would be. I went up to my belly but no higher. Instead I got in line for the little dinky outside shower and has a quick, somewhat warm, wash down. So nice except the sun quickly faded and it cools quickly down. Girls start arriving tomorrow morning and I believe I will be helping with check in. It's going to be a busy one but exciting too! We are bound to feed off of the girls' energy and excitement. I will talk to you all again tomorrow. Stay well and safely, Nedine
Can't wait for all the patrols to join us tomorrow!
My view for the next week and a bit.
Hello from SOAR 2017!
Hello everyone!
It’s 11:30pm and as the day comes to a close, so to does my first day on site.
I left this morning from home just after 9am in order to be early for my flight out of Kelowna scheduled for 12:50. I’m sure glad I did get there early as there was an issue with the aircraft and a smaller plane was being brought in instead. We all managed to get a seat on the plane thanks to some amazing people who gave up their seats for us, and we were on our way to Vancouver an hour late. Our connecting flight to Smithers was at 2:15 but was delayed as well to 3:30 so we had a chance to eat (me a rice bowl), relax and catch up with old friends also joining us on the flight.
Huzzah! We landed and made it to Smithers, albeit later than planned. The view when you exit the airport is phenomenal. Our gear was quickly loaded onto a waiting truck along with a school bus to take us onsite. A short 10 min drive and we were here! The things that really surprised us was the warm temperatures and snow on the mountain tops.
Today consisted of checking in, getting set up and settled and meeting up with our departments. Dinner was a little hectic but eventually everyone was fed and full of yummy taco food and pie (strawberry rhubarb for me). Announcements were made and off to meetings or free time you went.
I now have all my gear, shirts and am ready to start working tomorrow. It is still partially light out but I’m so ready for bed. Check in with you all tomorrow.
Stay well and safely,
Nedine
Hey everyone! I'm currently at Camp Arbuckle on Lake Okanagan in Lake Country for Monashee Area's SOAR PreCamp. It is supposed to be a gorgeous weekend and the girls and guiders are full of energy and excitement. Will try to remember to take more photos and update as I can. Yours in Guiding, Nedine
Check it out! The crest for SOAR 2017 has just been released! I think it’s a fantastic reflection of the theme “Spirit of the Mountains” as well as the area we will be camping.
The pumpkin orange/red fox and sandy colours have been showing up on all the newly released images and merch. I wonder if this will be the colour of the SOAR shirt. On a personal level, I would find that hilarious because that was also the colour for the FUN 2015 camp I attended in the UK. Not my favourite but a nice return to the more earthy, neutral colours we have had in the past.
To purchase merch only available before camp, check out the link below. The items here will not be available at camp (only extra merch if they have it). Kind of tempted to pick up the toque and backpack. http://www.zonewest.ca/soar17/garments
Happy World Thinking Day to all my fellow Guiding Sisters around the world! I have been fortunate to travel and meet so many wonderful people abroad and at I...
As Thinking Day comes to a close, here is a short message of World Thinking Day wishes to my fellow Sisters in Guiding.
Happy Founder’s Day to my Scouting friends!

Hello October!
Hello everyone.
Sorry for a lack of updates and posts but fall is always my busy season! It is when Guiding gets started and that alone can take a lot of energy out of any guider (I am even taking on opening a multi-branch unit!). I am also Assistant Stage Manager for our theatre’s production of Mary Poppins so that means rehearsals every night.
DON’T FORGET registration for core staff acceptance in November closes OCT 15th! Congrats to everyone who has been accepted as a patrol leader! It’s an exciting year ahead of us.
Progress on secret project is coming along. Major work on it will be happening the first weekend of November, so be prepared to hear more about it next month, including the unveiling.
What are you doing to get ready for SOAR? Cookie selling to fundraise funds? Learning new camp skills in this fall weather (or winter depending where you are)? Designing crests or traders? Share with us!
I hope you have a fabulous day and Happy Thanksgiving.
Yours in Guiding,
Nedine
Girl Guides Australia, thanks

SOAR 2017
Hello all,
It’s hard to believe but SOAR 2017 is just a little over a year away! I guess it’s time to start up this blog again and share everything that’s going on. The camp will be July 22-29, 2017!
LOCATION: This time, SOAR is going to be held in Smithers. I’m excited to have the opportunity to explore a part of the province I’ve never been to before.

It’s right up by that red arrow in the Northwest corner of BC. SOAR 2014 was in Enderby which is close to Salmon Arm in the Southeast corner. According to Google maps its an 11 hr trip by car between Enderby and Smithers.
THEME: the Steering Committee just released the theme for SOAR 2017 which will be Spirit of the Mountain. Very fitting.
APPLICATION: Applications are open for all positions. I haven’t applied yet, but stay tuned as to why in the near future.
SOCIAL: There is finally a FB page for SOAR! The updated website is awesome and you can also follow them on twitter, youtube and instagram. Go to soarbc.com for all the links.
This is it for now from me but I will be back to update as more information is available and there is more to share. I am really looking forward to SOAR once again and I hope I get the opportunity to go once again.
Yours in Guiding,
Nedine
Did you know the first National Camp was held in 1927 in Victoria, BC?
Were you at Guiding Mosaic 2010, in Guelph, Ontario? What memories did you make there?
I had the pleasure of working with Diane twice as part of the Special Events crew at SOAR who was on the Special Events team at GM. It was great to hear about her memories and experiences at GM vs SOAR.
6 favourite selfies of 2014… (In Croatia, after getting my hair curled, on graduation day, at a week long girl guide camp in July, in my dorm room on a good hair day, and back home for winter break)
I spy a familiar face from SOAR!
