#DailyDevotion Jesus Is The Righteous, Victorious and Humble King
#DailyDevotion Jesus Is The Righteous, Victorious and Humble King
Zech. 9 9Be very happy, people of Zion! Shout aloud, people of Jerusalem. You see, your King will come to you, He is righteous and victorious, poor, and riding on a donkey, on a young burro, the colt of a donkey. 10He will get rid of the chariots in Ephraim and the war horses in Jerusalem; He will also get rid of the bow used in battle. He will talk peace to the nations, and He will rule from sea to sea and from the Euphrates river to the end of the world.
Matt. 21:5 and John 12:15 cite Zech. 9:9 in their Palm Sunday accounts. Zech. 9:9 here also fulfills what Zechariah prophesied in verses 1-8. There is cause for great rejoicing here, but not yet for the returning Jews from Babylon. Their king is Cyrus and then Darius the Persians. David's seed is relegated to being a mere governor. But the seed of David is preserved through him. But there is coming a day and it has come that the Father's David would come into Jerusalem and would do so in this fashion. Many rejoiced on that day but the rejoicing was short lived. Through faith in Jesus we all are the people of Zion. We are the people of Jerusalem. We should rejoice and shout aloud because Israel's true King and true David are one person in Jesus Christ who has fulfilled this scripture passage on Palm Sunday. He has shown Himself to be our King and our God, i.e. Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
Jesus is the righteous one. He is the righteous one who has denied and overcome the temptations of the devil for us. His name is the one little word that overcomes Satan. His righteousness is our victory in the day of trouble. We don't need to beat our heads, our hearts and minds with the Law when tempted. It seems that only exacerbates the problem, cf. Romans 7. It is the good news we have a righteous and victorious King, Jesus who has overcome our sin, our temptations and afflictions for us.
Jesus is also poor. It could also be translated as humble or afflicted. Jesus indeed was humble and afflicted for us. He was afflicted by the devil in the wilderness and putting His trust in His Father He overcame those temptations. He was afflicted for us in the garden, in the Sanhedrin, in Pilate's and Herod's courts and finally upon the hill of Golgotha. He was humbled for us to the point of death and the grave. His humility was demonstrated by riding upon a young burro. Such was the case for Jerusalem's kings. They were not to ride in on war horses because they were supposed to trust in Yahweh to give them the victory, not in their own military might. Jesus wins for us the victory not by His might but by His innocent suffering and death.
Jesus is returning again. On that day He will destroy all the weapons of war and those that rise up against Him. He will establish peace on earth for all those that follow Him. Even now, Jesus is speaking peace to the nations and His reign is over all. All that happens now He works to His purpose of spreading the good news of His peace, growing His Church, and strengthening and preserving His holy people. That would be you and me. As we go forth in our daily lives we are living under Him in His rule. We are trusting Him to overcome the wicked with the good. We trust He knows what He is doing. We do not need to take up arms in His name. We instead confess our faith in Him. We pray in His name. We proclaim His excellencies in all the earth. We do good to those who hate us and who do evil against us. We entrust those people to Jesus.
Heavenly Father, we do indeed rejoice and are glad at the entrance of Your Son, Jesus Christ, in to Jerusalem. Preserve us in His Kingdom so we continually sing His praise now and when He returns in glory. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

#DailyDevotion The LORD's Eye Is On His People
#DailyDevotion The LORD's Eye Is On His People
Zech. 9 This is a divine revelation. The Word of the LORD is against the land of Hadrach and against Damascus because the LORD watches people and especially the tribes of Israel. 2He is also against Hamath which borders on it, and against Tyre and Sidon though they are very shrewd. 3Tyre built herself a fortress and heaped up silver like dirt and gold like mud on the streets. 4But the Lord will make her poor. He will smash her wall into the sea, and fire will burn her down. Ashkelon should see it and be afraid; let Gaza feel great anguish, and Ekron, because her hopes are dashed. Gaza will lose her king, and Ashkelon her people. 6A mixed race will live in Ashdod, and I will smash the Philistines’ pride. 7I will take away the bloody meat they have in their mouths and the detestable pieces of sacrifice from between their teeth. Some will be left there for our God, to be like a family in Judah; the people of Ekron will be like the Jebusites. 8I will camp in front of My house against the invading army so that it can’t come or go. No one will pass through them again to oppress them, because I will now watch them with My own eyes.
Unlike other previous sections of Zechariah, chapters 9-14 don't have dates attached to them. In the previous chapters most of the prophecies there concerned what was happening in Judah in their present time. Switching to not having dates indicates to many scholars that this second half of Zechariah concerns the distant future, perhaps even in the eschaton (the last day).
A divine revelation, an oracle sets this section apart from others and it will set apart chapters 9-10 and 11-14. Some of these places were no more after Israel's conquests and then later Assyrian and Babylonian conquests. They stand representing something else, someone else. It would seem some of them represent the general enemies of the Church, i.e. Israel. Tyre is a bit different. It would seem Tyre represents those nations, peoples and systems that worship wealth. In Revelation the same is represented as Babylon. In particular, the LORD here says she built a fortress and hoarded silver and gold. The LORD is against these peoples because His eye is on them. He knows what they are thinking and what they are doing. They oppose His will and His ways. Their trust is not in Him but in false gods. Good news! His eye is also on Israel, i.e. the Church. What the LORD does is always in service to purifying, preserving and growing His Church. It won't look like it in human terms but He is not only all seeing but He is also all wise. He knows what He is doing far better than us.
Several of these cities are Philistine cities. Many were conquered by Joshua. Most were taken care of by David. The LORD is going to smash their pride. Already in Zechariah's day, they were a mixed race of people. They are non-existent today. We see the charge against them is also eating blood and having detestable sacrifices. The LORD is going to take these things away from them. So today, these people are simply representative of all, and I mean all the nations of the earth. Not all people in every nation; the LORD has people in every nation but they are citizens of the kingdom of God. We indeed are foreigners in this world. We gentile believers in Jesus are those like the Jebusites whom David incorporated into Israel. Verse 8 is similar to Revelation chapters 21 and 22. The LORD is our temple. His people have inherited the earth. He protects them from all harm and danger in the world to come.
Heavenly Father, help us to see Your wise hand moving through history as You bring us into Your kingdom now in these last days. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
#DailyDevotion The LORD Will Save All Nations
#DailyDevotion The LORD Will Save All Nations
Zech. 8 18 The Word of the LORD of armies came to me again. 19The LORD of armies said: “For the people of Judah the fast in the fourth month, the fast in the fifth month, the fast in the seventh month, and the fast in the tenth month will turn to joy and delight and to happy festivals. But love truth and peace.” 20The LORD of armies said: “It will still happen that nations, including people living in many cities, will come. 21Those who live in one city will go to another and say, ‘We’re certainly going there to pray for the LORD’s good will and seek the LORD of armies; I myself am going.’ 22“Then many people and strong nations will come to seek the LORD of armies in Jerusalem and pray for the Lord’s good will.” 23The LORD of armies said: “In those days ten men speaking every kind of language found among the nations will take hold of the garment of the man of Judah and say, ‘We’ll go with you; we’ve heard God is with you.’ ”
“The Word of the LORD of armies came to me again,” sets this section of the chapter apart from the previous section which began the same way. It is a continuation of the ten promises from the LORD in this chapter. These are the last three promises. This eighth promise is certainly a wonderful one. The people of Judah, since the exile, began four fasts commemorating the four aspects of the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. The LORD though has brought them back from their exile. He is providing the means and the way to rebuild the temple and Jerusalem. He's even using the pagan king of Persia's money to do it. The LORD is now going to turn their fasts into joy, delight and to happy festivals. It's the sort of happy reversal the LORD brings about all the time. He gives a warning though. He tells them to love truth and peace. The LORD Jesus Christ is truth and peace. They know Him at this time as the Word of the LORD of armies. Loving Him is to then flow to showing truth and peace to those in their midst. They are no more to take joy in a lie, take advantage of widows, orphans and foreigners. They are no longer to commit murder and swear to a lie to get prosperous. Truth and peace is the order of the day. The ninth promise is those who live in the nations and the cities will come to Jerusalem to pray and seek the LORD of armies. Three times a year the Israelites were to come to Jerusalem to commune with the LORD of armies and to hear His word with much festive joy. Indeed we see this particularly a few centuries later on the day of Pentecost. They of course were doing this long beforehand. But now something new is added. Many people and strong nations, i.e. gentiles would come to see the LORD of armies and pray for His good will. Slowing and surely we see this coming to fulfillment. Those who worshiped many gods would see the wisdom of the one God of Israel. They would hear His instructions and see His wisdom. We see this in the Gospels as different gentiles seek the LORD Jesus Christ and want to hear Him.
The final tenth is again a prophecy of the nations coming to faith in the LORD Jesus Christ. Paul would call this a mystery of the faith, the Gentiles receiving the same promises the LORD made to Israel and being joined to Israel. As the Apostles go out into the world and the Jews who believe them go into the world, those who speak other languages would attach themselves to them to hear the good news because they see God is with them. May the nations continue to see the wisdom of God in the lives and speech of His people, the Church, and seek to attach themselves to us so they may be saved.
Heavenly Father, continually give us Your Holy Spirit so our lives may proclaim the glory of Jesus and the people see and hear Jesus and so be saved. In Jesus's name. Amen.
