“She wears Haint Blue, which in Hoodoo is used to ward off evil spirits. Everything she has on—her beads, her mojo bag, her leather belt with a blade—is part of her armor. That’s who she is: fully protected, fully grounded in her beliefs.”-Wunmi Mosaku. “We gave her these beads around her neck...So those beads were like protective beads, blessed beads, spiritual beads...She’s that spiritual leader in the community, So we really wanted her to have a Mojo bag of her own, a little pouch where she would carry things to cut roots with, and she had a chatelaine with a little bottle, like maybe she carried some healing oils. And then when we get to the Juke it’s also that Haint Blue color, that protective blue color that is indicative of the Geechee people.”-Ruth E. Carter.
