I truly believe the "Andy Weir wrote Ryland Grace as Ryan Gosling" lore based on the differences between the book and the movie.

Andy Weir was like... "Ryan Gosling is H O T. Muscles! He's good at everything! He wakes up in space and gets right to it! BULGING muscles!!!"

Then Ryan gets ahold of the character and he's like... SCIENCE PUN SHIRTS! CLUMSY! Wakes up in space and has an epic crashout! If this character is meant to be based on me, he needs to be 50% less competent and cool!

I think what's great about Ryan Gosling is that he's not afraid to be a complete loser on screen. He doesn't have so much pride that he can't handle being a big dummy lame mess failure. I truly think that's why his stuff is so nuanced and compelling.
