His hesitation to touch her was wiped out when Whiskey bridged the gap, resting her head to his chest. The hand hovering in the air came to rest on her arm, a slow motion rubbing up and down from shoulder to elbow, meant to be comforting.
Glen was one step away from drawing his arm around her, pulling her close–but he didn’t. He took a deep breath and looked down at her, meeting her wide, teary blue eyes. He wondered what in the world had made her come all the way out here.
Still, he couldn’t bring himself to ask it. Not yet. Instead, he licked his lips and gave a nod to acknowledge her words. “You’re… far from home,” he stated–an obvious observation. “I live down the road. Let me take you there. You can get warm. Dry your tears.” And despite his hesitation to touch her, his hand came up, lightly brushing at her cheek. It was the barest touch, hardly there at all. He dropped his hand back to her shoulder. “It won’t take long to get there.”
And then he’d what? Find out what happened, drive her back home, let her calm down and rest. Help her.
His gentle touches and gestures were like a sedative. Her heart rate slowed significantly and the tears began to stop. She wiped at her eyes for a moment and looked back at him as he spoke. She nodded slowly acknowledging how far she’d run. It hadn’t clicked in her head until she was here with him. She wasn’t even sure how long she’d been outside. Her legs had gone numb and her feet stung from walking through the brush barefoot. The wind whipped around her for a moment and she pulled her bathrobe tighter around her chest.
She couldn’t quite form more words just yet. Only nodding while he spoke. He offered her a safe place to get herself back together. She was grateful for his kindness. She’d already thanked him once. There was no need to repeat herself. Or so she thought. Somehow her pride was slowly coming back to her. Showering him with thank yous may appear weak. She already looked pathetic enough being disheveled and sobbing.
She clung to his arm as she tried to find her balance again as she walked. Her legs were very unhappy with the sudden hard exercise. They were practically jelly.
“I hope it’s ok if I hold on. I think I ran a bit too hard.”

Tears ran down her face as she cradled her beloved’s head against her chest. They’d been through so much together in that compound. Abuse, tests, pain, neglect. It had been a rough ride and now on the run, they got caught in a crossfire between two rival gangs. He had taken quite a few bullets in the chest before collapsing to the ground. Even when his life was ending, he was trying to protect the cat.
She cried loudly, not caring who heard her wails. Not until a voice came from behind her. She hissed loudly and bristled as she felt the presence circle around in front of her. Her eyes met a strange looking man. Her anger faltered back to sadness and grief as she looked back down at the other experiment in her arms. They’d hardly had a taste of freedom. He died scared. But he wasn’t alone. He had her.

Even with her gift of gab, Riley couldn’t always get across her intentions. She put aside the inclinations of heat, and whatever in God’s name that entailed, for the more pressing matters: her unexpected roommate’s contributions to the apartment.
“I’m not making myself clear – it’s that I was never taught, ah, whatever ridiculous word you wanna call it. Spellcraft, magic, Wiccan rituals, voudon. Gandalf to Potter, I got none’a it. Nearly set this place on fire trying to light a match more’n once. If I’ve figured out any of it, it’s ninety percent luck and the rest is from professional relationships. To be clear, what I’m getting at’s this: what is the uptick to having a familiar around? Do I get Plus Two on my Enchanting rolls?”
It was her way of talking around another issue: when she wasn’t on the hunt to feed, the last thing Riley wanted to do was to talk to other people. Her apartment was her last bastion of solitude. From what little Whiskey had intimated, it’d been a long time since she’d had someone to leech off, so she couldn’t just be kicked back out to the street, but… Some-times, she just wanted to sit around all weekend in her underwear listening to podcasts.
Whiskey nodded and considered Riley’s words before spoke. “I kinda work like a lightning rod for magic. I can help channel it and make it more powerful and focused.” She laughed a little at the way Riley worded it. “Your magic does get a little boost from me.”
“I can’t do a lot on my own, only little spells and rituals I’ve learned from previous masters. I know some good wards and protection spells, but I need a magical entity to help me complete them.”
She thought about her previous masters and bonds. The witches and warlocks she’d served her whole life. How she was cast aside and the line broken. Her relaxed state faltered for a moment as she thought about being abandoned again.
She leaned forward and took a sip from the mug of milk. The cool liquid calming her thoughts back down as she looked back at Riley.
“I promise I won’t be a pain. I mean, I might sometimes. But I can be a good kitty most days. I can even stay a cat if that’s what you’d prefer.”

It was easy to sell himself short, really. With the echo of his mother’s voice in his head in too many memories selling him short, it was all just a genetic flaw at his point, wasn’t it? But a quirked grin and some smart assed words were easier to play off, than a moment of depressing thoughts.
“Aye, a drink would certainly raise t'e standard.” He mused lightly, raising a brow at her fingers poking at his chest. A smile. As weird as their encounters might’ve been before, he was glad to see her again.
She took a long drag from the cigarette and exhaled the smoke into the cool night air. The smoke curled gracefully through the air as she brought her attention back to Murphy. Her hands were still on his chest. She grinned up at him when he accepted her invitation.
“Old friends sharing a drink to adjust their standards.” Her voice was light and joking. “Sounds like a good time to me.”

Vivian initially had her reservations about Whiskey. It wasn’t her job, she tried to tell Glen, to keep outsiders safe within their territory–especially cats. But Glen had convinced her, and after meeting the feline shifter, she accepted it.
Whiskey buying a drink for her was the least she could do.
Vivian gave a small nod and ordered a beer from the bartender. The place was crowded, and smelled of too many bodies reeking of cologne and alcohol. She made a slight face at it all, tuned out the noise from the jukebox, and looked back to the blonde.
“I’m glad you think so.” The pack being a safe place was important to her. “And thank you, for the night out. I need this.”
Whiskey was all smiles with Vivian. She couldn’t put into words how appreciative she was for the welcoming wolves.
Even moreso for the company out. She was trying to behave herself and having a girl’s night kept her from stirring the usual pot. Not that she wanted for anything right now, but she was always in the mood for a little fun.
She took a sip of her wine before speaking again.
“I haven’t had a girl’s night in ages. Haven’t had very many female friends as of late. Been on the move too much to make any real deep connections, you know?”
“I’m hoping to settle here for a bit at least. I’m sick of moving and living out of my car.”
The cat’s eyes scanned the crowd and took in the locals. The sea of scents was overwhelming but almost in an exciting way. The wolf seemed a bit uncomfortable in the crowd, but a couple of drinks could probably fix that. She understood the plight of heightened senses. They made her scared of loud noises and particular about her perfume. She liked to drown out the outside world with jasmine perfume.
“Tell me a bit about yourself, Vivian, I’d love to get to know the both of you a bit more.”

He’d always had trouble sleeping, even before the rival pack had destroyed his strongly rooted sense of security, leaving him with nightmares and worries. This time of night–or morning, more accurately–it was fairly common to find Glen out in the woods near the home he and Vivian shared. Not always in wolf form, no. Sometimes, he just liked to walk.
There were dozens of creatures out–smaller prey animals that fled immediately when the scented a big bad wolf. Glen wasn’t hunting tonight, he was just walking to clear his head. Breathing in the cool air, he smelled the other critters and moved on to avoid them. They’d be safe tonight.
As he neared the road that would lead to the house, he smelled something different–another kind of creature, a familiar creature. He halted in his steps, sniffing the air again.
Whiskey. It was undeniably her. But–why was she here?
Something was wrong.
Glen moved quickly, breaking through the brush. He saw her, disheveled and crying. The scent of fear and distress was strong. He didn’t question any more how she got there, but moved toward her. When he reached out to take her shoulders–but he stopped, hesitated, not sure if she would want or let him.
“Hey,” he said, his voice quiet, even, so much more calmer outwardly than inwardly. “It’s okay. You’re not lost.”
Her first encounter with werewolves left her scarred mentally and physically. She had been nothing more than a plaything to sociopathic bloodthirsty beasts. None of which had anything in common with the wolf in front of her. His voice was gentle as he reached out to her, but stopped. Her mind was moving a mile a minute, but it slowed to a halt when he reached for her. In that moment, she wanted desperately to be held. She stepped toward him and leaned her head against his chest for just a moment, not considering if the personal space invasion was a welcome one or not.
All she could think of was the nightmare.
Teeth and claws gnashing at her, pain covering her body, blood leaking into her eyes, low growls. She’d been so good at forcing the memories away, but maybe being around wolves again brought them bubbling back to the surface. Not that she blamed either of them for her night terror. They’d been welcoming and Glen had promised her protection. She truly believed him. Her experience with other supernatural beings have been less than satisfactory. But mostly it had been her fault.
In her years, she had preyed on unsuspecting men to make a life for herself. But now that she had her feet under her, she could make a life on her own. Well, on the dime of some of her previous marks. Gifts showered over her made great money when the time came. Diamond jewelry, paintings, and other decadent presents provided a comfortable living without Whiskey having to work a day in her life. She never regretted making her own way after being lost and homeless for so long.
She only ever regretted crossing those supernatural beings. A vampire, those werewolves, and another shifter had her on their shit list. It made her stay on the run as much as she could manage. Usually she’d get a few months of peace before one of them showed up. She couldn’t help but worry about it now that her adrenaline was flowing.
She took a few deep breaths and looked up at him, tears still in her eyes.
“Thank you.”

Privacy is important to me. But it’s not just about sticking two fingers up and saying I don’t want anyone to know my business. It’s an artistic choice. I think that for any actor to convince their audience that they have completely inhabited a character requires a certain level of anonymity. The world is changing so quickly and actors now have this huge platform of social media to interact with their audiences, but I choose not to have a social media footprint. I’m old-school like that.
