The First Battle of Grozny was a major military operation in which Russian forces invaded and eventually seized the Chechen capital, Grozny, during the opening phase of the First Chechen War. Fought between December 1994 and March 1995, the campaign ended with Russian troops occupying the city, followed by the strengthening of support among many Chechens for the government of Dzhokhar Dudayev.

The initial Russian offensive suffered significant losses, destroying troop morale. After two more months of intense urban combat and adjustments in military strategy, Russian forces ultimately gained control of the city.

The battle devastated Grozny, causing widespread destruction and heavy civilian casualties, involving the most extensive aerial and artillery bombardment seen in Europe since the conclusion of World War II.
