Wanted to paint this dog
fun fact: if you pirated six full length albums from your favourite band, listened to them all back to back 5 times, and then sent them $20 on ko-fi or whatever, on average they would have earned slightly more money per play than they'd get from you streaming the same shit with ads on spotify.
invariably when I talk about media piracy people are like "but what!!! about creators!!! they need to make a living!!!" my homey in romey if you're that worried about it send your favourite artist $5 right now. do it. shut the fuck up.
I want to support artists but I can ONLY do it if I'm being drip fed shittier and shittier versions of the content a tech executive thinks I want. I have no choice in the matter because uhhhhhh other people won't pay for things if they're free. yeah that's right. other people are the problem.
here's the piracy secret big media don't want you to know: you can always give artists money if you want to.
this reminds me of a story that a particular music youtuber i watch has told, i think he mentions it at least once in this video. dissatisfied with streaming payouts, he released one of his albums on several pirating websites instead, including a small read me along side it that had a link to his paypal. and, as he tells it, he made more money off of that album than any other release before it
You can also support a lot of artists on Bandcamp, which is honestly a great way to do it because you get copies of the albums DRM-free (often at a pay-what-you-can rate), they get a much bigger chunk of proceeds, and there's always Bandcamp Fridays, first Friday of every month, where Bandcamp waves their fees and abt 93% of proceeds (the rest is processing fees from digital payments) go directly to artists.
Don't get me wrong, you are a pirate, etc etc, but there are also options that involve paying artists and buying music directly, it's not just Pirate Or Spotify/Streaming like this kind of makes it seem (unintentionally I'm positive).
