My take on ; Modern Bean & Bark!
Hello all - sorry, it's been ages lol. Life's just gotten a bit difficult, which just put me off sharing stuff for a good while. I've probably said it before (that's assuming people read it) but regardless, I'd like to share some personal design ideas I had for hypothetical Bean and Bark modern redesigns.
Bean the dynamite
Bean was a bit of a pain to make, he was the first one of the two I decided to tackle and it was really difficult to try and make realistic design decisions that I think Sonic Team would hypothetically make if they did redesign these two as being modern characters.
I figured giving him darker markings would help make him more "cool" and/or "mature", since without them he looked quite plain and not much different from the original design. I didn't want to overdo it, nor did I want to just make Bean longer and call it a day - but in the end, I accidentally made him pretty similar to Jet, so.. oops lol. I still like the end result though!
Ultimately I made really small changes here - but one choice i did specifically want to make was through Bean's hair. My mentality behind that in particular was how there's really no other Sonic character that HAS hair like Bean, which I feel would make him really odd looking compared to the rest. So id imagine his new hair would now lean more into the realm of how Tangle's hair is handled - sprinkling in a tiny bit of Archie inspo while also not entirely copying.
Bark the Polar Bear
Oh Bark. How I love him and hate drawing him. /J
Bark was an interesting design to make. I decided to switch out his original beanie for a more wintery themed hat, alongside curling his hair around his face to help make him look more closed off, alongside shortening the big ponytail (???) part by quite alot as he would've already been a pretty huge character, he really wouldn't need that amount of hair.
I also desperately wanted to stay true to his body type, as I feel classic to modern designs have a really bad habit of entirely removing the uniqueness of classic designs, particularly with the classic chaotix, so I really didn't want to do that to Bark here. However, I did remove the odd upper shoulder.. bulk? He has?? It's weird to describe lol, I ended up getting rid of it as he really didn't need it to show he's a big strong guy.
Here's the two of them together! I might consider doing other classic characters, particularly Fang in the future if I'm feeling up to it, but yeah. It felt wrong to post them individually since they're a duo!
(yes I know the lineart doesn't match the sizes, it annoys me too, don't worry /j)
