Chapter 3
Morning arrived quietly.
Golden sunlight filtered through the frosted windows, turning the fresh snow outside into a sea of glittering white. The fire had burned down to glowing embers, leaving the cabin wrapped in a peaceful silence.
Logan stirred.
For a moment, he didn't know where he was.
He tensed automatically, years of instinct telling him to expect danger.
Instead, he smelled coffee.
Fresh coffee.
And...
Something sweet.
Vanilla.
Maple syrup.
He blinked.
The memories from the night before slowly returned.
The cabin.
The nightmare.
Loren holding his hand.
He looked down.
The yellow blanket was still draped over his shoulders.
No one had tucked him in since…
He couldn't even remember.
Across the room, Loren stood at the stove, humming quietly to herself. A mixing bowl rested on the counter beside her while a waffle iron hissed softly.
She noticed him watching.
"Morning."
Logan rubbed a hand over his face.
"...Mornin'."
"How'd you sleep?”
He considered lying.
"...Better."
She smiled.
"I'm glad."
There was no mention of the nightmare.
No pity.
No awkward questions.
Just acceptance.
"I've got clean towels if you'd like a shower," she offered.
"Bathroom's down the hall."
Logan looked down at himself.
His flannel was stiff with dried blood.
His hands still smelled faintly of metal and whiskey.
"...Been a while."
"Then it's probably overdue."
A faint huff escaped him.
It almost sounded like a laugh.
"Guess so."
She handed him a neatly folded towel and a spare sweatshirt that looked much too large for her.
"It'll probably fit."
"You sure?"
"You need it more than I do."
Logan hesitated before taking them.
"...Thanks."
Nearly half an hour later, steam drifted from the bathroom as Logan stepped back into the cabin.
His hair was damp, hanging around his face.
The blood was gone.
The bruises had healed.
He looked...lighter.
Not because his past had disappeared.
Because, for the first time in years, he didn't feel like he had to wear it on his skin.
Loren was setting two plates on the table.
Golden waffles.
Butter melting into the squares.
Fresh berries.
A small bottle of maple syrup.
Logan stared.
"You made all this?"
She looked confused.
"...It's just waffles."
"I ain't had homemade food in..." He shook his head. "Long time."
"Well," she said, pulling out a chair, "today seemed like a good day to change that."
He sat.
The first bite stopped him cold.
It tasted…
Like home.
Only he wasn't sure he'd ever really had one.
Loren watched him carefully.
"So..."
He looked up.
"Where do you plan on heading?"
The question hung in the air.
Logan stared at his plate.
Truth was…
He hadn't planned that far ahead.
He never did.
One town.
One fight.
One bottle.
Then another road.
Another town.
Another empty night.
"I don't know."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"I never really know."
Loren nodded as though she'd expected that answer.
"You're welcome to stay."
He looked at her.
She said it so simply.
No conditions.
No expectations.
No hidden agenda.
Just…
Stay.
"You barely know me."
"I know enough."
"You know I get nightmares."
"I do."
"I'm dangerous."
"You've been nothing but respectful to me."
"I drink too much."
"I noticed."
A tiny smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"I've got more baggage than anyone should."
"So do I."
Silence settled between them again.
Logan looked around the little cabin.
The fire.
The smell of coffee.
The yellow blanket folded neatly over the recliner.
Someone had cared whether he was warm.
Someone had sat beside him through the worst parts of the night without asking him to explain.
He realized something that hurt almost as much as it healed.
He had spent nearly two centuries surviving.
He had never really known comfort.
Not like this.
Not the quiet kind.
Not the kind that asked for nothing in return.
He looked back at Loren.
"If..." he began, clearing his throat, "if the offer's real..."
"It is."
"...Then maybe I'll stay a while."
Loren's smile was gentle, never triumphant.
"I'd like that."
Outside, snow continued to blanket the Canadian wilderness.
Inside, for the first time in longer than Logan could remember, he wasn't thinking about where he had to run next.
For one morning…
He was simply home.
Several days passed before either of them mentioned the subject.
Life settled into a rhythm.
In the mornings, Logan would wake before sunrise to split firewood while Loren brewed coffee.
She moved carefully through the kitchen with practiced precision, using the counter for balance when she needed to and her cane when she didn't.
Logan noticed everything.
Not because he was judging.
Because he had spent nearly two centuries watching people survive.
He saw the stiffness in her legs when the mornings were cold.
He noticed the way one hand sometimes refused to cooperate when she buttoned her sweater.
He watched her take longer climbing the porch steps, then laugh under her breath when she finally reached the top.
Most of all...
He noticed she never complained.
One afternoon, Loren reached for a mixing bowl on the highest shelf.
Without thinking, Logan stood and took it down.
"Thanks," she said with an easy smile.
He handed it over.
"You could've asked."
"I know."
She paused.
"But I also like doing things myself."
Logan nodded.
"Got it."
From then on, he waited.
If she asked for help, he was there before she finished the sentence.
If she didn't ask…
He let her do things her own way.
It wasn't long before Loren noticed.
"You stopped trying to help."
"I stopped assuming."
She smiled.
"That's even better."
That evening, they sat on the porch wrapped in blankets while snow drifted across the clearing.
Logan finally spoke.
"I've been wonderin' something."
Loren looked over.
"Yeah?"
"Your legs..."
She waited.
"You were born with cerebral palsy?"
She nodded.
"I was."
He hesitated.
"You don't gotta answer if you don't want."
"I don't mind."
She looked out toward the trees.
"Cerebral palsy wasn't the only thing."
Logan stayed quiet.
"My birth was complicated."
She folded her hands together.
"There were mistakes.”
"Mistakes?"
"The doctors didn't act quickly enough."
She spoke without anger, only honesty.
"My brain was without oxygen long enough to cause permanent damage."
Logan's jaw tightened.
"They knew?"
"They should have."
"And nobody answered for it?"
"There was a medical malpractice case."
He looked at her.
She shrugged gently.
"It couldn't undo what happened."
Silence settled between them.
"I spent most of my childhood in hospitals."
She smiled faintly.
"Physical therapy."
"Occupational therapy."
"Doctor after doctor."
"Braces."
"Surgeries."
"People telling me what I'd never be able to do."
"And yet..." Logan said quietly.
"And yet I'm here."
She met his eyes.
"I've lived with people underestimating me my entire life."
"I don't need anyone feeling sorry for me."
"I need people willing to walk beside me."
Logan thought about those words for a long time.
Finally he nodded.
"I can do that."
Loren smiled.
"I know."
For the first time in years, Logan realized he wasn't the only survivor sitting on that porch.
They had survived very different battles.
But somehow...
They understood each other anyway.

Part 2 of Not Everyone Has Claws
Chapter 2
Snow crunched beneath Logan's boots as he stepped outside.
The bitter Canadian wind stung the cuts across his face, though most had already disappeared.
Loren hadn't gone far.
She stood beneath a flickering streetlamp, pulling her coat tighter around herself, her cane planted firmly in the snow. She didn't turn around.
"I wasn't sure you'd come," she admitted quietly.
"I ain't sayin' I am."
A small smile crossed her face.
"Fair enough."
For a long moment they simply walked.
No questions.
No awkward attempts at conversation.
Only the sound of boots and a cane moving through fresh snow.
"...You always walk into bars full of people beatin' each other?" Logan finally asked.
"No."
"Then why tonight?"
She looked ahead.
"I've watched you for months."
That made Logan tense.
"Not in a creepy way," she added quickly. "You always looked... lost."
He snorted.
"You don't know the half of it."
"I don't need to."
Another silence settled between them.
Eventually a small cabin came into view, smoke curling from its chimney.
"It's not much," Loren said. "But it's warm."
Logan stopped at the porch.
"I should leave."
"You've said that three times."
"...Yeah."
"And you're still here."
For the first time in what felt like years, Logan didn't have a reason.
Inside, the cabin smelled faintly of cedar, coffee, and cinnamon instead of cigarettes and stale beer.
Loren hung her coat carefully before kneeling beside the fireplace to add another log.
"Coffee?" she asked.
"I drink whiskey."
"I noticed."
"...Coffee's fine."
She smiled without teasing him.
When she returned with two mugs, Logan had fallen into the old recliner near the fire.
His eyes were already closed.
Not asleep.
Just…
Resting.
Safe enough to let his guard down for a minute.
Loren quietly draped a blanket over his shoulders.
He didn't wake.
Just drew this in a drunken rage bc someone on Twitter pissed me off😭😭😭

“The bar was the same as every other one in the Canadian north, dim lighting, cheap beer, and men trying to forget who they were.”
Chapter 1:
The only thing different tonight was her.
Loren stepped through the door just as Logan hurled a man twice his size into the far wall.
The impact shook the room. Blood streaked down the plaster where the man slid to the floor in a heap.
She paused just inside the doorway, leaning lightly on her cane, unfazed by the noise or the violence.
The air reeked of sweat, blood, and cigars. This wasn’t a place she usually went, but she had seen the man she was looking for enter this bar countless times while she ran errands through town. Tonight, she wanted to know why.
A few men shot suspicious glances in her direction. Loren ignored them and made her way to the bar, ordering a shot of whiskey. She took a stool near the end.
Not too far. Not too close. Just enough to see him.
Wolverine.
She’d noticed him around Alberta before, wandering, always alone. She wasn’t even sure he had a place to stay. He drank. He smoked. He fought. And yet, despite the rumors, she found him strangely compelling.
Logan stood by the makeshift cage, fists clenched, knuckles split and raw. He wasn’t even breathing hard.
“That’s all you got?” he snarled at the man on the floor.
No answer. Just a broken body.
Typical.
The bartender slid another whiskey toward Loren.
“Picked the wrong night.”
She took the glass and met his eyes, her gaze steady and serious.
“No,” she said calmly. “I think it’s the right one.”
The bartender chuckled and turned away.
Logan’s head snapped toward her.
He was shirtless, sweat-slicked, blood dripping from his nose. His jaw was locked tight, something feral barely restrained beneath the surface.
The other fighter still hadn’t moved. Loren suspected more than a few bones were broken.
She watched Logan without gawking, simply observing. She’d seen him here before, always quiet unless violence called to him. The kind of man people avoided. The kind people feared.
But tonight, something had pulled her here.
An hour later, Logan stepped out of the cage. He grabbed his flannel and shoved past the crowd, ignoring the stares. When he noticed her at the bar, something in him stalled, just for a second.
He sat a few stools away and ordered bourbon, eyes fixed on the counter.
Loren could tell he was waiting for her to speak.
She didn’t.
After a moment, Logan glanced her way.
“You don’t scare easily,” he said. His voice was rough, his eyes dark beneath tangled hair and mutton chops.
“I could say the same about you,” Loren replied, meeting his gaze. “I’m Loren.”
His lip twitched, not quite a smile.
“Logan.”
“What’re you doin’ here?” he asked, still staring at the bar. “I’m not lookin’ for company.”
“I came for you.”
That got his attention.
She noticed the blood on his nose , already slowing, already healing. She’d heard the rumors: dangerous, feral, a killer…But when she looked at him, she saw something else.
Loneliness.
People filtered out. The man from the fight eventually limped away.
“Why?” Logan asked coldly.
“Because you’re alone.”
The truth landed heavier than a punch.
“You don’t want what I’ve got,” he muttered.
“I’m not here because I want something,” Loren said gently. “I’m here because of you.”
Silence.
She pulled a tissue from her coat and stood, leaving her cane by the stool. She touched his arm lightly.
“Let me help.”
He jerked away. “Don’t touch me.”
“I’m not going to hurt you.” Her voice was soft, steady.
She pressed the tissue gently to his nose. “Look up.”
He did.
“You heal fast,” she said, lowering her hand.
“And you think you got me figured out?” he asked.
“No. But I see the pain you hide.”
That did it.
Logan shoved away from the bar and paced, pressing his forehead to the wall.
“You can stay at my place,” Loren said quietly, retrieving her cane. “Cabin’s not far. No one’ll look at you like a monster.”
“I’m not the kinda guy you take home,” he said bitterly.
“I’m not afraid of what you are.”
“You don’t even know what I’m capable of.”
“I know this,” she said. “You’re hurting. And right now, you need warmth, not another fight.”
She paused. “I know what it’s like to be alone.”
Something cracked.
Loren headed for the door.
Logan stayed behind, frozen. Her voice lingered , not the words, but the gentleness. The way she’d looked at him like he was human.
After a long moment, he cursed under his breath and stepped out into the snow.
Will be updating this shortly
