A frog? Stapler stared at her, squinting. Christ. He was small for his age, but surely he wasn’t that small. Still, she’d agreed to the magic show, and so Stapler was careful to make sure his expression didn’t reveal too much of his annoyance. And anyway, he’d encountered worse. He took a few steps closer and pulled out a deck of cards, shuffling them idly without really looking at them.

It was just a standard trick with his illusions, low-key enough to pass by without too much attention, high-key enough to get him a bit of extra cash when he played it at his corner. There wasn’t much of a market for half-starved boys with magic shows, but he did what he could and got by well enough.

“I think,” he said with a wry smile, “you’re safe from frogdom. For now. Pick a card. Any card.”

"Alright, here goes." Looking somewhere over her shoulder, her hand floated over the cards before deciding itself on one. It was the sixth of hearts. "Do I put in back in the pack now or are you gonna guess it?" Dana's thumb moved around the back of the card; the agent knew this agitated motion was caused by a desire to disprove the magic  trick, but she needed to leave the kid a chance.

"I…I have before, yeah," Angie answered. "And I’ll be forgetful about what happens but I always end up remembering."

And though she did always end up remembering, she couldn’t help but wonder if it would’ve been better if she just forgot.

{  A bitter tone caused by the same questions endlessly asked for the same cases. She'd almost rather perform an autopsy at this point. }

"Right— right." He glanced at his pants and wrinkled his nose upon observing the bile eating through the fabric of it, though one might argue that the smile curling his lips was more than just a trick of the dim lighting.

Eager hands began picking up the items, analyzing each briefly and cautiously. Here was something a little more concrete, a little more typical to murderers. Glancing over his shoulder, he looked to Scully and gave a nod.

"We should have a stakeout. If Skinner won’t let us station a couple agents here, we’ll do it.”

"I'll call him." Scully took out her gigantic cell phone and dialed the assistant director's office. After a few minutes of having to describe the scene and - of course, the dreaded question - Mulder's theories towards the suspect, the agent turned back to her partner.

"He says if it takes him more than three hours to show up, that he can't keep agents on the task when they could be doing something else. Are you counting on his arrival anytime soon?"
