Keeping up with a novel series between releases is tough, there's not much news in the interim! While I do have an email newsletter you can subscribe to if you prefer to get monthly news about everything going on with Kidd Commander, this blog is going to be where I post more casual updates about the writing process for the next prose book. If you're like me, following social medias that post somewhat regularly is how you remember to Go To Things between installments, so let's give this a shot!

I still feel pretty good about the second arc in the comic but one thing I'm glad I get another shot at is the explanation of how sapient machinery is treated like, socially. There was so little room to talk about it in the comic (and I was a clumsier writer lol) I've always felt like there were some things I didn't get to touch on that I would have liked to

For the most part I think any fiction where we have sapient life that is fabricated inorganically gets weird if you look at it too hard. It's like time travel in that at some point you just have to accept it's Fantasy Bullshit and allow some of it to remain murky, IDEALLY the writer has created a space where the reader is willing to do that and it doesn't cause too much friction. Like you CAN write in the weeds about this kind of thing but then it basically becomes the entire story, either extreme works but there isn't a ton of viable room in the middle of the gradient imo

still though i think i like the lampshading that robots get in the novel version more, another place where the True Canon is in-between maybe

A while ago another comic artist I vehemently disagreed with over every little thing insisted I was wasting Noon's potential because I never show the transitions between their different reflections. "I wanna WATCH it change that's the cool part" oh my goddd

Even if I had the resources to waste what would be at least half a page of panels on this every single time Noon changed anything, there IS no process. It's like lava in a lamp their details are constantly undulating or popping in and out of the world, they just ARE, why would they invent a whole Routine every single time for the benefit of other people. Actually that's not just a boring waste of time, that's bad characterization for Noon lol. They only play it up when they're trying to achieve something with someone and most of the time they don't give a shit

Half of my editing process is sadly removing excessive instances of the word "pretty" getting tacked on to anything Ulrich does when we're sitting with Phineas' narration
