going through bio mistakes and predicting questions!! hope I do alright tomorrow.
todayās pretty.
So I was recently asked for advice on how to study history so I thought Iād share my tips and tricks.
When In Class
- Taking Notes. When you take notes (in university/college) I recommend audio recording the lecture (with permission of course), I love to use OneNote for this as you can keep your recording in the same place as your written notes.
- LISTEN! I like to pay 100% attention in my lectures and then listen to the recording immediately after while writing notes. This means that Iām focusing on how the lecturer links their points and understanding the material, not just copying it down from what they say.
When Revising / Studying
First! you must remember that history is a narrative. Meaning that it is a story following a logical order if you understand the sequence of events its so easy to understand the history.
Make Flashcards (I like to use Quizlet as I can access my flashcards whenever I need them).Ā Flashcards can include dates, key figures/events.
Plan Essays, A great way to prepare for exams is to prepare practice essay questions, it allows you to create links in your knowledge and connect your ideas - (thereās no point in memorising something if you donāt know where you could apply it.
Teach Someone! (or just pretend to), this is my favourite technique for memorising information, it means that you can understandĀ
When working on an EssayĀ
Plan what you need to do! Research, plan, write, reference, check. It makes you feel accomplished and motivates you to tick more things off of the checklist.
Finish at least 2 days before the due date. This gives you plenty of time to leave the essay and come back to it for a final read through. Fresh eyes are the best eyes
Feel free toĀ share your own tips and letās ace this together
xoxo
Lesser seen french tips
These are a few things that i think might be relevant to language learners that i donāt think Iāve seen on langblr! At the end of the day itās whatever works for you, but i hope these might be helpful š
š¼pouvoir, vouloir and aller (to be able, to want and to go) are really useful verbs to learn confidently. If you want to use a verb you donāt know how to conjugate, you can often follow one of these verbs conjugated with the infinitive to express something similar. Itās always better that than guessing a conjugation!
š¼watch videos of french people speaking english! Most french people will still impose a little bit of french pronunciation even while speaking really good english, and this highlights french pronunciation that you wouldnāt notice in a person speaking fluent french.Ā
š¼for me, reading simple YA novels written originally in french is actually more beneficial than translated english books that Iām familiar with. This will prevent you from reading by assumption/context/memory. Also, french books tend to be more culturally relevant, and include phrasing and idioms that are more typically french.
š¼contradiction of my last point, but try watching shows originally in your native language with french audio and subtitles. For some reason, itās far easier for me to understand and i know many people struggle with listening to french. Netflix often has the option of picking the Ā language of your show, i would highly recommend this if you struggle to understand french films/shows.Ā
š¼quizlet is the most effective method of learning vocab Iāve found! For me, writing out flashcards takes a long time, and typing in the answers solidifies spelling better than just repeating the words.Ā
š¼if youāre someone who struggles with pronunciation, some people find it helpful to have someone who doesnāt speak the language read aloud in it, as it highlights typical errors that a speaker of your language will make (and will probably make you feel good about yourself lbh)Ā
š¼practise just speaking aimlessly in the language, be it to yourself, your pet, or even just while thinking. Itāll help you practise coming up with things to say on the spot, and when you screech to a halt because you donāt know how to express something, youāll know what vocab itāll be useful for you to learn next.Ā
