Paper Mario fell silent.
No, no n o, he had just gotten through one bad emotional experience, but this one might be arguably worse. That smile was so fake. So crafted to try to please him. He began to sway, crinkling up slightly. Why couldn’t he just’ve been less protective, and bring him on his adventures? So many people have jabbed insults at Luigi on his adventures– He was even MISTAKEN for Luigi once. Was that how it felt? Being mistaken for your more popular brother?
He fell. He told himself to calm down, but he turned into a heap of sobs and whimpers. I could’ve been a better brother. I could’ve done something correctly. Calm down, calm down, you’ll only make Luigi more upset.
He just couldn’t. He wanted to tell Luigi that things were not okay, that he needed to arrange something with him, to give him some kind of help–…
... What?
“... Mario...?”
Luigi stood, stunned, as his brother crumpled to the ground, beginning to cry.
Jaw slightly agape, the younger of the two brothers took in the scene, blinking rapidly. This... Didn’t happen. Mario... Didn’t just fall to the ground, sobbing like this. Always, his brother put on a brave face -- a face that Luigi sought to emulate -- and even when a few tears shed loose, they proved to be quick, easy, and Mario hopped right back into the game again. That was his bro, always bouncing back, always leaping right back into the fray after a particularly difficult time.
So why, then, was this any different...?
Luigi didn’t say anything offensive, did he? Not that he could think of. He didn’t bring up the whole incident with Count Bleck despite the fact he thought about it constantly; he didn’t snap at him like he’d been tempted to, a haha yeah right in regard to brotherly favoritism. He’d held it back, because Mario didn’t deserve that treatment. Honestly, he didn’t deserve anything that Luigi provided him with: a foe, a dead-weight, a weaker clone of a better version of himself... So, why? Why here, why now?
Was Luigi simply that detrimental to Mario that even a simple smile at this point could reduce him to this?
It didn’t feel real at all. Nothing about this felt real. But then again, the world fell away to Luigi ages ago. This just especially stood out in that not-real scale. Perhaps that was why Luigi experienced numbness and shock at first. But it didn’t take long for the gears to turn, and suddenly a surge of nervous energy shot through him, making Luigi do a tiny leap before he approached Mario, eyebrows hiked high and paper fingers trembling.
“M-Mario! Wh-what’s wrong? I-I’m sorry, I-- I didn’t mean to upset you! I-I’ll fix it, okay? Tell me what I d-did, and I’ll fix it...”
That adventure before didn’t matter anymore. Only this did.
