hello i am a random internet stranger and i wanted to talk about one of gooseworx's tweets bc this whole drama is really frustrating
ive noticed over the years that a lot of these sort of centrist edgy humor types like to create a false dichotomy between "real" racism and "fake" racism. other examples that come to mind are critikal and idubbbz.
i think the choice to differentiate "genuine" racism from "ingenuine" racism is very intentional, because she is well aware she has participated in racist jokes and behavior. so, like other content creators who have participated in racism and edgy humor, she has to draw a line between the real racists and the fake racists as a way of defending herself. either that or offload the responsibility to society/culture as a whole at the time (i.e., "no one cared about edgy humor back then," "everyone was doing it")
a lot of people have been using this tweet as proof that gooseworx is not racist. after all, how could she possibly be racist when she's taking such a clear stance against it? well, she isn't. she, like many other people, is acting like the only form of racism that matters is when it comes from a KKK member calling for black people to be lynched on the street.
making a statement like this is extremely surface level and safe. it's like someone saying they hate rapists in response to being accused of mocking sexual assault victims. that's not actually addressing the situation, all it is is an attempt to distance yourself from a group that is universally disliked. saying stuff like this is about as radical and supportive as saying "i hate people that are big meanie heads!"
on another note, one of the most frustrating things about calling out racism is how much people will cling to plausible deniability to make you out to be the unreasonable one. they will constantly beat around racist talking points, but stay just vague enough that if you say anything they can frame you as being the unreasonable one for noticing the underlying intent of what they're saying. they can berate you for being mad over a shortened form of the word "negative," because clearly that's what they were laughing about when they kept repeating the word "nega." it has nothing to do with the fact that it sounds like the n-word. in fact, multiple characters are called nega! clearly they were laughing about nega-eggman, you dumbass! yeah, it's just the whole "i'm not touching you" argument.
and before someone brings up the "it was xyz years ago" argument, i do think people can change. what i dont believe is that content creators that refuse to give up their platform after using it to perpetuate racism, whether intentional or not, have really changed as much as they insist they have. especially when they've done no active work to make up for those behaviors outside of toning it down so they don't get flack for it.
you dont need a social media presence to live. you dont need to be an internet microcelebrity. plenty of people live their day-to-day lives as average joe internet nobodies. if you have proven yourself irresponsible, just leave. you can improve and become a better person Outside of the internet.
