SPS doctors save eyesight of 5 year old injured from Chinese String
A 5 year old male child sustained deep cuts over both his eyes and nose due to Chinese string. The relatives of the child recount the incident saying that the child was standing infront of a two wheeler when he suddenly started shouting in pain and blood started pouring from his eyes and nose. They saw that Chinese string was cutting into his face which they rapidly removed.
He was rushed to SPS Hospital where Dr. Ashish Gupta, Senior Consultant & Head, Dept. of Plastic & Microvascular Surgery operated on him. Dr. Gupta said that we routinely get patients who have sustained cuts over hands, face, neck and scalp every year around Lohri and Besant Panchmi after getting entangled in the plastic string. These patients are usually people walking on the road or driving two-wheelers, falling off rooftops and these injuries can be life and limb threatening.
Dr. Gupta said, “The string had cut so deep into the skin that the skull bone and nasal bones were visible with active bleeding from both sides of the eyes and over the nose. The cut was running through his right eye just missing the cornea or he would have lost sight in his right eye.”
Kite flying though is a great outdoor sport but is fraught with the dangers of sustaining falls from heights, cuts, and lacerations to fingers and face. The dangers of this unassuming sport are multiplied when the use of the glass laced, polyethylene fiber blended with the metal zinc thread; in common verbatim labeled as “The Chinese Dor” is brought into play.
Precautions while flying kites:
• Do not buy Chinese Dor. It is a Criminal Offence to buy or sell this product.
• Keep away from edges of the roof and low ledges.
• Do not treat cuts from strings as minor.
• Deep cuts can have tendon, vessel and/or nerve injuries. A specialist’s advice is essential.
· On the road keep a look out for the string, dive slow especially over bridges. Plastic and metal guard rails are available in the market that can be installed in front of any two-wheelers to prevent cuts from Chinese dor.
· If u get stuck in the string, STOP immediately and slowly remove it to prevents cuts on hands and forearms.
· Keep firm pressure over the injury and rush to the nearest hospital.
