So, now it’s official that Lukanette was canon by the end of season 3. No, it wasn’t clear, same for Adrimi even though they were more obvious, but some signs were still there.

(Translation from the French):
Marinette: Oh, by the way, your perfect chord, did you end up finding it?
Luka: I think yes, that’s it. But.. Are you sure that you want to hear it?
L: I see, You’re still thinking about Adrien, aren’t you?
[Marinette looks to the side embarrassed]
=> Basically, translation would be “are you ready to date me? I see, no you aren’t, you’re still thinking about Adrien.”
Then, end of Miracle Queen:

[Marinette nods, Luka plays]
=> Translation: “are you sure you want to date me?”, Marinette says yes.
Conclusion: That’s super subtle but I guess that’s how they became canon.
NOW. Marinette is trying to move on from her first love, a strong love at that. The New York special happens shortly after Miracle Queen, and moving on from someone takes time, especially because Marinette has the regret of having never been able to confess to Adrien.
The New York special was supposed to update us on Adrien and Marinette’s feelings after the finale.
Marinette is trying to convince herself she moved on during the whole special.
Marinette refused to sit next to Adrien for the flight.
Didn’t want to dance with him at first.
Called him a friend 100000 times.
She’s not cheating on Luka; she’s trying to avoid Adrien - who, may I say, also called her a friend often enough in the special.
So yeah, she’s trying. Except: she can’t. Because sometimes feelings are like that, because it was too early, because she never got the chance to let Adrien know how she felt and that’s keeping her from really moving on.
Because the universe is finally playing in her favour in term of constantly putting her in situation with Adrien just as she’s trying to avoid him.
Also reminder: Luka knows very well since the first day he met her that she’s in love with Adrien. He knows what he’s getting himself into since the beginning but still decided to do it. I’m not saying he’s at fault, but that he’s aware and made the choice to keep waiting for Marinette and to not let himself move on from her, holding on a hope she’d go to him once she’d move on.
Except: it apparently doesn’t happen. At least not now, and maybe never for all we know. And that’s okay, we can’t command our feelings and maybe that’s what Marinette is learning here.
I doubt the rivalry ships were supposed to be much bigger than that, but that the fandom made it seems bigger than it was; I have no idea how things are gonna unfold in season 4, and we knew both Kagami and Luka were here to help our characters grow in the love department, which is what’s happening.
