The old man deliberately set the Spartan Tutor from Hell loose on poor Dino to bring him into line with Nono's wishes. He'd willfully interfered with another family, and possibly disrupted succession if he had arranged for Val's 'accident'. Enrico had never believed the Cavallone heir fell from a horse. He remembered Nonna's tales of Tiberia and how the Cavallone trained for mounted combat.

Sorry for all the food spam I have been posting on er on other social networks, Y was on leave so we literally ate our way through the holidays together. It was pretty good and we might have one last really good Italian lunch before he has to go back.. I get embarrassed drawing us though, so here are some full and happy fictional people instead

Dino, like Tsuna, is powerful, but abused children have trouble going against their abusers
Not if they have a really good support system, and a really good therapist.
I am speaking as a survivor myself.
Dino has his own family's support - in the AU i am also counting on the Varia.
Tsuna will have friends to count on, for sure. And Romario and the Varia too, always in the au.
I question if he actually has a support system that would help with Reborn. I mean, he's afraid of the man like Tsuna is, so I doubt anyone stopped the world's greatest hitman from doing whatever he wanted in the name of "tutoring"
Also, I question any high up in mafia hierarchy being able to go to therapy. Like obviously they wouldn't be able to go to a civilian therapist, and what if the mafiso therapist uses what they say against their family?
Cavallone are 5000 man, making a enemy out of them is not smart

Ok, i feel that some people are confusing Real Life with fiction.
Ofc in real life you would not have any mafioso go to therapy. Heck, no one in their sane mind would casually approach a mafioso about anything.
KHR is arguably a lot less about real life mafia and more about Shonen manga shenanigans.
And considering KHR as a work of fiction, then anything is possible.
@khr-guilded-cage is right, Dino has 5000 men at his service who are ready to do anything to protect him. Arguably here is where Dino and Tsuna differ. Dino was already in the mafia, he wants to go away, but he just loves his family too much and in turn his family supports him and his decisions. Dino actively went against the Nono to save Squalo's life and the Varia, and whilst he probably had some sort of punishment off screen for it he is not suffering a lot of the consequences, besides keeping to train Tsuna and his guardians, meaning that probably the Vongola took a good look at the Cavallone family and decided not to mess too much with Dino, especially if they wanted him to still be on the Vongola's side, but also because 5000 men supporting their boss on a united front are far stronger than several divided factions all under one banner - arguably the reason why they were so frazzled during the Byakuran/Arcobaleno curse ARC before TYY!Tsuna and his TYY! guardians arrived.
Tsuna could have the same, but he has some very unexperienced guardians - sure, they are strong, but it really feels like Tsuna is constantly trying to herd cats. His father is a deadbeat playing triple agent for his own agenda, Nono booked it the moment Tsuna appeared so he could dump all of his troubles onto a kid, the Arcobaleno have their own agenda, Xanxus and the Varia are clearly antagonistic towards Tsuna and they are helping his guardians because - uuuhhh - idk but definitely not for charity.
If all of these little factions that are constantly at war with each other was united not only because "the enemy of my enemy is a friend", but also because they share common values and visions, then Tsuna could definitely change things.
But this is fiction, why are we arguing.

5. It's absolutely the Big Damn Table. Do I still need to complete it? Yeah, but it is such a satisfaction seeing it anyway!
12. I don't think I have come up with many AUs for them to be fair, although the Vampire AU is just constantly there!
That is a big project!, And it's fun to follow. It's had to choose, but one of my favorites out of those might be the one where Dino is a ghost and Squalo tries to solve the mystery of his death.
Ah yes, the vampires! Dino is definitely stuck in a situation XD And poor Romario who just wants him to get back safely.
Uh i had fun writing that! I wanted something different, idk, I might pick it up again as its own thing!

Ok, I felt a little bit called into the cause earlier on when I as lurking and reading @khr-guilded-cage posts.
And now I am wearing my clown wig and honk my kazoo and I am outlining the Canon Divergent AU where Dino, in spite of all, decides that he wants to support Xanxus during the Cradle Affair, screw everything.
Buckle up!
So.
Squalo has already killed Tyr, gained the title of Swords Emperor and as a bonus he is enrolled into the Varia.
This means that Dino and Squalo already argued bitterly, they are both mourning the loss of their situationship and they are just doing their thing.
Then ofc Xanxus explodes - we know why, I am not repeating this part.
Dino is on the fence.
His family is technically allied to the Vongola and by reason he should be supporting the Vongola against the Varia.
And yet.
Dino has never really gotten over his dad's death and he is kindof resenting Reborn for forcing him into a world he was desperately trying to run away from.
Dino knows perfectly that now if he doesn't support the Vongola, the Cavallone family is doomed.
And yet.
He knows Xanxus' situation well enough to think that it has never been a fair thing, he thinks that the only friend he has ever had is right there in the middle of everything.
Dino looks at Romario and Romario only says "we will follow our boss to hell and back".
And Dino decides that he is tired of the abuse, he is tired of being manhandled by Reborn, he is tired of being forced into situations and he is tired of not having any choice ever.
He shows up in the midst of the battle, the Vongola are already singing their victory, whilst the Varia look at him as if they want to kill him.
And Dino marches with his 5000 men into battle, right next to Xanxus and against the Vongola.
Now, I have two possible outcomes, you choose whichever you like best.
THE VARIA WIN
Well, the battle ends hen Xanxus kills Timoteo and incapacitates forever Iemitsu, whilst Reborn is nowhere to be found, being chased by some hellions. Dino literally left behind the chocolate and the sweetness he had to be able to just be the Bucking Bronco.
For him it is only half a victory, Reborn did manage to make him a ruthless mafia leader. He does have the Varia's gratitude and that means that now the Vongola are now under Xanxus.
Dino's debts are immediately erased, he gains enough influence and power, power that he immediately uses to elect a new Cavallone Decimo. Dino retires and only the Varia and Romario know where he lives and what he does
He has finally some choice, he decides to live as normally and as anonymously as possible, even though the blood on his hands definitely leaves his ugly mark.
At least he has rekindled his situationship with Squalo and Xanxus is civil with him.
This may mean no Tsuna in the picture.
THE VARIA LOSE
Well, the battle was fought valiantly on both sides, but the Vongola outnumbered the Varia and Cavallone.
Xanxus is put in the freezer, things go as per canon, but with a difference.
18 yrs old Squalo takes the command of the Varia ad interim and with the help of Marmon disguises all of the Cavallone survivors as Varia soldiers - he will have a lot of work between reforging documents, trying to make everything look good enough so that both Timoteo and Iemitsu think that everything is back under their control
Dino is also in the freezer - there is no fucking way they are letting go another Sky. Cue Squalo swearing another oath to free Dino as well, other than Xanxus.
Romario is in the Varia too, albeit disguised.
For the time being the Varia are behaving like role model citizens, but the plans are in the works.
And ofc Tsuna is in the picture.
Plans are being actioned - Tsuna has to see the Vongola's ruthlessness with his own eyes and once again Romario ill be a key.

I assume Tsuna as ally in case the Varia lose. Yes. The whole point of maing Tsuna see the atrocities made by the Vongola, Romario telling Tsuna how kind-hearted Dino is and the entire freezer treatment is to make Tsuna an ally.
And also to give Tsuna the choice no one ever had.
I am assuming that Marmon will distract Reborn enough. Maybe Skull is there too.
Make Tsuna Decimo for one week, then have him abdicate to Xanxus and open a coffe shoop with Kyoko

After all is said and done and tsunami opens the coffee shop with Kyoko, Dino starts working there a a waiter. Dino has had enough trauma for a lifetime, he needs something normal. And therapy too.
Tsuna , Dino , Squalo and Xanxus are very happy they got what they wanted

And Xanxus got appointed as the rightfull Vongola Decimo/Undecimo with no back stabbing sibling . Because the people who put him in power didn't want it whatsoever
And Squalo is now either the Varia boss and right-hand man of the Don or just the right-hand man of the Don
