▌ August 22nd, 1998. J's Bar, Raccoon City.

a new face isn't a miracle by any means, but in her experience it's nothing more than a brief rest stop before moving on wherever they were going. this one ( leon, was it? ) has been here several nights in a row, now. it is not in her nature to be judgemental but nonetheless, she falls prey to assumption like anyone else — either he's taken a liking to this little bar, filled each night with the same handful of patrons, or has nowhere else to go ( or, perhaps, somewhere he's avoiding ). she's worked here long enough that she knows perhaps her age all head to blackjack's after work — he sticks out, young and lean, amidst the tired, grizzled cops and avoidant fathers.

"what'll it be tonight, @squarecranks?" her smile is genuine, tone soft — she feels no need to pretend to be anything but herself, even if she could afford to be a little more assertive ( all too aware that is precisely why she works the longer shifts, closes up, pulls kevin to the staff room and sits him upright so he doesn't choke on his own vomit ). glass already in hand, she's the only one working tonight — that suits her fine. allows her time to get to know the new face ( and what a pretty one it is, she thinks ).

while  the  streets  of  raccoon  city  buzzed  around  with  noise  and  blazing  colour,  leon  found  a  quiet  kind  of  sanctuary  in  j’s  bar.  conveniently  stowed  not  far  from  the  apartment  complex  he’d  been  keeping  tabs  on,  it  had  become  a  familiar  refuge;  a  place  where  he  could  sit  in  the  corner,  sip  something  warm  and  let  the  world  spin  without  him  for  a  while.

he  liked  it  here.  not  only  for  the  calm,  but  for  the  way  people  minded  their  own  business.  a  few  wisecracks  from  the  older  regulars,  the  occasional  burst  of  shouting  near  the  pool  table,  but  nothing  that  ever  truly  broke  the  quiet  hum  of  the  place.

and  then  there  was  her—  cindy.  a  name  he  hadn't  forgotten  since  his first  boot stepped  inside.  she  was  cute,  sure,  but  more  than  that,  she  had  a  smile  that  could  brighten  up  an  entire  room.  the  kind  that  seemed  to  pull  a  grin  even  out  of  the  grumpiest  patron.  alike  sunshine  in  the  rain,  the  waitress  moved  through  the  bar  with  ease,  mirth  in  her  voice  and  light  with  every  step.

❝   i  think  i'll  just  have  an old fashioned whiskey,  thanks. ❞  he  offering  her  a  small,  almost  shy-like  smile,  leaning  in  a  little  closer  to  the  counter  and  resting  his  forearms  on  the  worn  surface.  blue  eyes  wandered  briefly  around,  scanning  for  another  waiter  or  anyone  else  working  the  floor,  yet  it  was  just  her  tonight  it  seemed.  brows  suddenly  furrowed.  ❝   everyone  else  collectively  call  in  for  a  sick  day  and  leave  you  behind?   ❞

Still, his eyes shine with jest. If the streets flood with the unspeakable, at least he’ll die with his best idiot pal by his side.

andre  cast  one  last  glance  over  his  shoulder  at  the  wreckage  behind  them-  twisted  metal,  cracked  pavement,  and  the  mangled  remains  of  both  undead  and  bow's  strewn  in  their  wake.  smoke  still  curled  from  some  of  the  bodies,  the  air  thick  with  the  stench  of  fresh  gunpowder  and  burning  flesh.

he  heaves  out  a  breath,  semi  laughter  bubbling  from  chapped  lips,  shaking  his  head  in  disbelief.  ❝  nah ❞  a  rascally  grin  towards  his  friend,  one  anthony  was  wholly  familiar  with.  ❝  believe  i  might've  over-packed,  though.   ❞ the  grenades  clinked  lightly  against  his  pouch  as  he  carefully  taps  on  his  tactical  belt,  then  gives  a  quick wink.  ❝  got  sa'more  'a  these  bad  boys  and  a  few  rounds  'a  thirty-seven-millimeter  tear  gas  jus'  waitin'  to  be  used  like  'ol sally  on  prom  night.   ❞

gunfire  ruptures suddenly  in  the  distance.  sharp.  chaotic-  echoing  throughout  the  once  peaceful  streets.  she  had  barely  turned  her  head,  ready  to  check  out  the  noise  when  a  rough  hand  grips  her  wrist.  it  was  strong  and  urgent,  yanking  her  down  and  into  the  cover  of  a  thick,  broken  piece  of  concrete  with  just  enough  room  for  the  two  of  them.  ❝   what  the–  ❞ a  gasp  of  breath  is  cut  short  as  debris  explodes  where  she'd  just been  standing  a  few  seconds  before.  the  force  of  it  almost  knocked  the  wind  from  her  lungs,  but  @priceforeverything  hold  never  wavered.  eyes  flutter  open,  lifting  towards  her  unknown  hero,  heart  pounding  and  confused  as  hell.

❝   who  are  you.  . ? and  what's  going  on?   ❞ another terrorist attack?   a  splinter  group  from  veltro, maybe?  but  it  couldn't  be  .  .  .  the  bsaa  had claimed  they  took  them  all  out.  her  own  brother  was even  there.
