What pulling people out of poverty means? - analysis on India

Frrom 1980 to 1990, China and India were pretty much tied when it came to total GDP. However, from 1980–2014, China's market reforms and 2001 WTO accession allowed its economy to grow by 430% between 2004 and 2014 alone. India grew at a much slower pace, causing its relative GDP share to bottom out at 19% of China's GDP by 2014.

2014 was the turning point for India. For the first time in over three decades, India's growth rate outpaced China's. India is projected to catch up from 2026 onwards, driven by structural reforms and population advantage. India will still be at one fourth of China's total GDP. Why? Let's find out!

China initiated its market reforms under Deng Xiaoping in 1978, capturing the supply chain shifts toward Asia when the West started shifting towards service oriented economy. India did not liberalise its economy until two decades later than China, even the Southeast Asian tigers had already pivoted towards becoming manufacturers. China built a massive, low-skilled, export-oriented manufacturing base. They also invested in heavy industries like steel, built large factories, and hired people who trained Chinese engineers and workers under them. China acquired technology from Germany, for example tunnel boring machines, to understand the technology from the inside.

Conversely, India bypassed manufacturing, and did not invest the same way China did. India jumped straight into service-oriented fields like IT and software, leaving India's massive low-skilled rural workforce without productive enterprise and means to get out of poverty. This also brings us to the question of INFRASTRUCTURE. China acquired land rapidly and built highways, massive ports, and power grids. Indian federalism and policy gridlock meant infrastructure projects routinely faced years of delay. After 2014, India’s infrastructure expansion shifted into hyper-drive, due to a massive increase in federal capital expenditure. A substantial portion of India's current overall highway, railway, transport and aviation capacity was built in the 12-year window after 2014.

After 2014,

Today, electricity generated in solar farms in Rajasthan or wind fields in Tamil Nadu can seamlessly flow anywhere across India to instantly stabilize localized deficits.

Building infrastructure matters. Building toilets and pipes that transport clean water gives human dignity to people who were neglected by the state for decades. It keeps their children alive so that those children can grow to adulthood, healthy and able. These are the people who build roads, transport and manufacture goods, and grow India's GDP.

Coming back to China, the Chinese are marvelling at how India's photovoltaic module production capacity has breached that of China's in just eight (8) years.

• Rail electrification: 45,000+ route-km added

Even India has outshinesed China and emerged as a global leader in UPI, generic pharmaceuticals, remittances and IT services in Modi era....

But here is the uncomfortable truth: China is still far ahead.

India GDP per capita: ~$2,703

So every Indian should ask:

Why did we lose so many decades after independence?

China began major economic reforms in 1978; India liberalised only in 1991. Manufacturing, exports, infrastructure and bureaucracy were areas where India fell behind for decades.

Every Indian must ask themselves a fundamental question: why are we still behind?

​What were the outcomes of 50 to 60 years of Congress rule?

​The answer is straightforward: pervasive corruption and dynastic politics hindered India's progress during those decades.

​The Congress leadership built immense wealth without a underlying family enterprise.
