Gabriel had an obsession with the RCMP. At first, he wanted to become a police officer himself. He never did but, his interest for the RCMP never went away. Rather, he had a strange growing hobby of collecting real items the police would use.

He hated authority such as the police, but he wanted to control. Wearing that police uniform, owning police gear, gave him a sense of control as if he had authority power over people. Despite this, he never respected their authority. Gabriel firmly believed that he was superior to the police.

Gabriel also held a grudge against the RCMP. Prior to the attack, someone broke into his property, he believed that the police never handled the situation well enough. He began to hate the police, even mentioning to someone prior that he wanted to “kill a cop”

During his rampage, Gabriel used a fake police car and real RCMP uniform to trick people into trusting him, allowing him to carry out his crimes.

During the atack at Raul Brasil school, Rhyllary Barbosa dos Santos, a 15 year old at the time, fighted against one of the perpertadors.

Rhyllary was a jiu-jitsu fighter and said she used a technique to protect herself while she was running out of the school. Luiz Henrique de Castro, who was one of the murderers, pulled her by the hair and started punching her on the face.

"When he saw that the other students were running away from the school, he let go of me and went after the other students and grabbed the hatchet. That's when I opened the door with a sudden movement. I think he didn't expect anyone to run towards him, and he didn't expect the other students to come out. He even tried to hold some of them back."

"He tried to trip me, but I planted my heel firmly on the ground and didn't let him knock me down, I didn't let my body go limp and become vulnerable to him. As soon as he grabbed my arm, I started shaking him to get him to let go, and he grabbed my hair and punched me several times. My desperation was to get him away from me."

Rhyllary is now 22 years old. She still lives in São Paulo and is now married.
