Tried to Save a Life, Got Scammed Out Of $5k

It feels pretty horrible to beg for donations, especially on the internet, but my roommate and I are in a pretty awful situation. The short of it is that we signed a lease with a third party who claimed that she was suicidal, had attempted suicide, and had been raped by a former roommate. All of these things were lies to cover up the fact that she was cheating on her partner. I let her slide on rent for months because I thought she needed an opportunity to get back on her feet, and then one day, she told my roommate everything was a lie and fled without even talking to me first.

This morning, I called the courthouse, and the person on the phone was very vague, likely because she's not allowed to give legal advice. She said that if we can't get the papers to her in person, we can't go forward with the lawsuit. I don't even know if she's in the same state anymore, and I really doubt that she is. So, the government is useless since I can't afford a lawyer.

I just don't know what else to do, because the system that was created to protect me from liars and criminals has failed me. I have been very good with my money up until this point, and now I live paycheck to paycheck. I have been planning to move in with my boyfriend for 2 years, and now that's in jeopardy because I tried to save someone who told me she had nowhere else to go.

I don't know if this is okay to ask, or if I should even be doing this, but I've exhausted all of my other options. Life update: Things took another turn. Had to isolate myself after my parents tricked me into getting into a car with them while they had covid. Managed to get out of it without testing positive so far, but like... Jesus. Every time I think my folks hit the bottom of the barrel, they bust out the fire axe and keep reaching. Bad enough that I have to deal with the things that are currently happening to me, but I also have to navigate my past at the same time. It's a lot. I don't think anyone should have to do this all at once, especially considering the private things that I don't think I should share to the internet.

I'm going to see if I can start streaming on twitch and take donations there, because I just can't hold a typical job while I'm trying to completely change my understanding of myself. Again, private stuff is private, but I will at least say that like... I have to deal with being only a few years out of a relationship with a family run by emotional abuse. Once you feel safe and comfortable after all that, after nearly 30 YEARS of that, things go bad fast. And then you have the crisis of the world at large on top of that, and... Oy.

Sorry for the rant. But I want to put out a statement that explains why I've been unavailable on social media and discord, and why I keep disappearing and fandom hopping. I have to be very particular about what I interact with right now, because my mind needs time to settle. I need time to process and heal, and adding the normal drama of life on top of what I'm already going through feels overwhelming. I want to say that things will get calm enough for me to return to my social circles soon, but every time I say that, I get more insane shit happening to me. BUT. Recently I have established a very firm boundary with the family members who hurt me. So I should see an increase in social energy soon, in theory, since they're the ones who always make things so chaotic that I can't function anymore.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you understand my situation, and if you have ever been in a situation like this, you're not alone, you're not a bad person for needing people to validate your feelings, and you have a right to take back control of your life like I did.

Despite this meme, I'm one of the few people who still like Rayman 2 Forever. It's very imperfect and a downgrade over 1 in many regards, but I still think it's a very decent platformer for something released on the Game Boy Color! :)
