The Metropolitan Museum of Art commonly called the MET sits between 5th Avenue and the Central Park between E80th and E84th Streets in New York. The MET is an urban conglomeration of various activities that makes its surroundings vibrant and colorful. There is a visible contrast in these activities on either edge of the MET- the Central Park on one side and the urban plaza on 5th Avenue on the other side. The people and their relation to the spaces around the MET transforms the space into an experiential activated and expressive urban setting that merges seamlessly with the city- and this is what comprises the life of the MET- more than just a museum as a place for exhibition and display of art.

Bryant Park Corporation BID- This area has a dense concentration of commercial buildings (business houses) mapped out on the land use map. The footprint and height of buildings is a reflection of the density of these commercial houses which allows the area to generate an annual cost to maintain the public spaces in the area. Also the extensive transportation system in the area allows for a smooth daily movement of people into the area.

RNY Urbanisms- Cognitive Map- Commute to Columbia University

My commute to school everyday involves experiencing the city at 3 levels (edges)- The Morningside Drive, The Morningside Park and The Morningside Ave each of which sit at 3 separate levels. The ‘path’ takes me through children play areas, people exercising, trees, and a great numbers of steps.  Also I experience different visual perspectives of the city depending upon which layer I am on.

I think greater the physical/visual/sound permeability between the outside and the inside, greater is the public interaction between the two spaces.

Do the people on bikes feel safe? Should there be a more clear demarcation for the bike lanes?How should the traffic and parking be organized around the bike lanes?

The steps form a seamless extension of the street to the public plaza but what struck me was the lack of direct access for the differently abled people. I think it is important to design spaces that can be used by one and all.
