Bluegrass, string music deeply rooted in African-American tradition

This article discusses and analyzes the influence of African American music in the bluegrass genre. Many black children in Appalachia grew up surrounded by banjos, harmonicas, and bluegrass legends such as Earl Scruggs. Listeners can hear the African influence specially in syncopated rhythms, and “flat vocal tones.” Furthermore, the classic blues and other traditionally black music influenced many prominent bluegrass bands’ music. 

However many black bluegrass musicians found it somewhat difficult to participate actively in the industry, due to Jim Crowe and other segregating laws. Allen Farmelo stated that no African Americans would have felt comfortable at bluegrass festivals, due to the heavy influence of Southern culture. However, this did not prevent the white bluegrass musicians from taking bits and pieces from black bluegrass and blues music. 

Even in the more recent years, famous bluegrass musicians play the original African version of a song and the American adapted version, so audiences can experience just how similar some of these adaptations are. African and African American culture have unique influences specifically in music, which are important to consider when reliving their collective memory.

Y’all v. Ya’ll v. Yall: Let the southern hospitality smackdown begin.

If you’re a southerner and you need a second-person-plural pronoun, you can bet that you’ll call upon your good old friend y’all. As you move up the east coast, you might catch a few yous and you’uns, but the prince of plural pronouns for “you” is definitely y’all. Yet, when it comes to spelling this contraction, is there more than one way to go about it?

Our answer: Yes.

On our twitter, @wvdialect, we took a poll of how Appalachian students spell the pronoun. The majority of the responses were, as expected, y’all, but about a quarter of the response were in dissent. These students used a variation in which they either dropped the apostrophe altogether (yall) or placed it after the ‘ya’ (ya’ll).

We inquired with our all-knowing southern linguist friends to see what they thought about our spelling debacle. All of them responded with a resounding y’all. Most of them chalked it up to how they interpret the contraction, which is as you+all. Though, they thought there may be a link between the contraction rule for he’ll being applied to the ya’ll variation by combining ya+all. Some stated that they’ve seen the variations used, even if they don’t use it themselves, but they haven’t been able to find a regional or social correlation.

So, there you have it, folks. Y’all/ya’ll/yall…. a modern mystery. Wait for an X-Files episode about it.
