Keep in mind during the upcoming breakâŠ
A few members of our SSDP chapter attended this conference in Orlando at the UCF campus. We met a lot of other students running chapters at their schools. It was great to meet some similar people and to share stories and ideas about how to end the drug war!

As of right now, it looks like Medical Marijuana will be appearing on the next ballot in Florida!
All of our hard work last semester payed off. Students and activists around the state worked endlessly to collect signatures and spread information and awareness. Now, Florida citizens will be able to decide if they want medical marijuana in their home state. :)

Florida: Medical Cannabis Measure Qualifies For 2014 Ballot
(NORML) The Florida Division of Elections today confirmed that proponents of a 2014 statewide measure to allow for the physician-supervised use of cannabis have gathered sufficient signatures to qualify for the November ballot.
The measure seeks to authorize doctors to recommend cannabis therapy to their patients at their discretion and authorizes the state Department of Health to register and regulate centers that produce and distribute marijuana for medical purposes.
Backers of the measure, United for Care, turned in over 683,000 valid signatures from Florida voters to qualify the measure. The initiative seeks to amend the state constitution.
New York Gov. Cuomo to Allow Limited Use of Medical Marijuana
NEW YORK (Reuters) â New York will soon allow the limited use of medical marijuana for seriously ill patients under a plan the stateâs governor will announce in the next few days, the New York Times reported on Saturday.
Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has steadily resisted pressure to legalize marijuana, was expected to announce the plan at Wednesdayâs State of the State address, according to the newspaperâs website.
A spokesman for Cuomoâs office declined to comment on the report.
The newspaper said the policy will be far more restrictive than the laws in Colorado or California, where medical marijuana is available to people with conditions such as backaches.

We did it, folks!
Connecticutâs Senate and House have successfully passed the Medical Marijuana bill!
All that stands in the way of this bill and it coming into law is a signature from Gov. Dan Malloy, which is all but guaranteed.
UConn SSDP did a lot of work, along with CT NORML, A Better Way Foundation, ACLU, and LEAP to help this bill along the way. Congrats to everyone who made this a reality, times are aâchangin and weâre at the forefront of the movement.

Florida Petition Has Almost One Million Demanding Medical Pot
New Post has been published on http://thestonedsociety.com/florida-petition-almost-one-million-demanding-medical-pot/
Florida Petition Has Almost One Million Demanding Medical Pot
In order to sign it, you must be a Florida resident and mail a signed form to them. Even though that sounds like a hassle, Ben Pollara, campaign director for the marijuana legalization effort, says theyâve already collected signatures from about five percent of the Florida population.
âWe have collected close to 900,000 and by Monday or Tuesday of next week, we should be close to 1 million. We are going to make it.â
By signing the petition for a ballot initiative,  in turn it would put medical marijuana legalization up for vote in 2014 (as reported by Unitedforcare). Backers can start working towards the required 700,000 signatures needed by the 1st of February; you can also mail the petition if you download it here.
Their staff is apparently very busy verifying the sudden deluge of signed petitions, which took off after Christmas. The proposed constitutional amendment only needs 683,149 valid voter signatures in order to get on the November ballot, but theyâre hoping to get over 1,050,000 signed petitions since their rejection rate is around 29 percent.
In addition, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has argued before the Florida Supreme Court that the ballot language is âconfusingâ and is attempting to derail the entire effort. State Solicitor General Allen Winsor argues, âYou donât even have to have a disease to get marijuana, the way this amendment is worded.â He also believes the amendment implies Florida is usurping federal law, which currently is strictly against marijuana usage in any form.
In order for the marijuana legalization effort in Florida to succeed, the petition will not only need to get on the ballot, but also receive at least 60 percent of the votes. If that happens, medical marijuana would become legal with doctorâs approval, and state-regulated dispensaries will be allowed.
The amendment specifically lists cancer, glaucoma and Parkinsonâs disease and âconditions for which a physician believes that the medical use of marijuana would likely outweigh the potential health risks for a patient.â But growing marijuana for recreational or personal medical use would still be illegal.
Wednesday night a student group at the University of West Florida discussed the legalization of medical marijuana.
Private prisons sue states for millions if they donât stay full
State run prisons are no better. When they get too empty the unions representing guards start getting nervous, and with just a few phone calls, probation officers start kicking in doors and giving felons violations on bullshit like having an unauthorized savings account or âpossession of a weaponâ for having kitchen knives. I did time with men who got caught up in these round ups, their stories are always ignored by these pieces about âprivateâ prisons. The next time someone talks to you about âprisons for profitâ remind them that ALL prisons are for profit, and all of them need to be closed down.
Major international divisions over the global âwar on drugs" have been revealed in a leaked draft of a UN document setting out the organisationâs long-term strategy for combating illicit narcotics.
UWF SSDP will be hosting a forum to discuss medical marijuana this Wednesday at 7pm in the UC Auditorium.Â
We will have free food and drinks :)
There will be several local speakers giving their expert opinions on Medical Marijuana. If you are unsure of the facts, this is the PERFECT opportunity to come learn about what medical marijuana is and how it will affect everyone in the Sunshine State! If you have any questions or concerns, you will be able to voice your opinions and receive answers from professionals.Â
