RIP to actor David Burke, one of my favourite Watson's.

He was the first Watson opposite Jeremey Brett's masterful Sherlock Holmes in the Granada series of the 80's.

No more the comedy relief bumbler (fun though that can be to watch) he ensured that this Watson was how the stories showed him to be: smart, well educated, but intelligent in a way very different to Holmes.

His decision to leave the role, was because he and his wife had been invited to join the Royal Shakespeare Company and felt that it would be a better arrangement as their son was still young and they wanted to be around him more.

And, with no offence to the superb Edward Hardwicke (Who Burke recommended as his successor), I preferred Burke's slightly more rigid Watson, someone who one felt had been in the military until recently and had been a man of the world.
