god, I used to be such a stick in the mud about my own characters’ designs. I treated the anime origins of my taste like an albatross. Constantly monitoring myself for overindulgence and impracticality because I didn’t want to be “that kind of artist" sucked all the joy out of designing and drawing characters. I lost interest in personal projects and the things that had motivated my development as an artist to begin with, and eventually stopped drawing anything outside of my obligations.

There is no better way to torture and kill your passion for anything, than to scrutinize whether your enjoyment of it has merit. Critique and thoughtful reflection are critical to the refinement of taste, but the purpose of curating taste is to bring you further happiness by understanding the things you enjoy, not to determine whether you should. Everything else, even when self-inflicted, is called peer pressure.
