A note of Appreciation
TheSSP Gala, a bi-annual event that is aimed at raising the profile and funds for SSP. The Gala was held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on the 5th of March. This year the focus was on celebrating SSPs 15th years of developing leaders for SA through the theme called “Creating Tomorrow’s Leaders Today.” The evening was graced by 500+ business leaders, professionals and our own alumni. At this event, 4 leaders were honoured for their role in the education landscape in SA, they are: Ms Louisa Mojela, Prof Nick Binedell, Mr Sim Tshabalala as well Mr Tshepang Mogotsi who is also an SSP Alumni.
The evening was both enlightening and entertaining for all. The delegates were addressed by our recent graduate Ayanda Nyathi who obtained 8 subject distinctions in matric 2014, our current scholar Keitumetsi Malatsi, a grade 10 scholar at American International School in Johannesburg; SSP’s Academic Director, Sibongile Khumalo; the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Itumeleng Kgaboesele as well as SSP Founder, Teresa Clarke. Among the presenters were prominent business leaders such as Sizwe Nxasana and Jabu Mabuza. Entertainment included Chester Missing, Theo of Mafikizolo and other acts. There was also a live auction that featured several wonderful prizes including fine art from the Goodman Gallery, exclusive tickets to the UEFA Champions League final in Berlin, a holiday at Martha’s Vineyard, your very own private label on a Ken Forrester barrel of wine, a golf weekend getaway at Sun City, a Jenna Clifford gift basket and many other exciting items.
The event was a big success and we thank everyone for their contribution and support given. Over R1 million was raised on the night, bringing us closer to our goal to raise funds to develop 200 of South Africa’s future leaders over the next 5 years and to have an even bigger impact in our countries most needy communities. We are hopeful that, this is the start of many fruitful and rewarding relationships in building the future of our country.
We would like to hear about your experience at our prestigious gala, send us an email at [email protected] or message us on our Facebook and Twitter page.

6 months ago, SSP scholar Kgothatso Molefe spoke to City Press newspaper about her SSP journey and meaningful relationships she has gained over the years.

Using The Skills I Learnt To Make A Difference
My name is Fortunate Tshirangwana and I am a recent SSP Alumna. I matriculated from Kingsmead College in 2013 and am currently on a gap year as a tutor at Master Maths, Rosebank. In August of this year I will be pursing an Industrial Engineering Degree at Lehigh University in the United States of America.
I received the SSP scholarship in November 2008 and I started at Kingsmead College in January 2009. Through SSP and the strong values that Kingsmead instilled in me, I became very interested in community service. I started to realise that the opportunities that SSP and Kingsmead have offered me will be meaningless unless I use them to improve the people around me and my community. I made it my goal to make the most of every opportunity that came my way and to try and use the skills I learned to make a change. Through SSP and the US Consulate I was selected as one of 8 one young South African leaders to participate in a Youth Leadership Programme. During this month long exchange I experienced a lot of things and saw first-hand the impact serving (community service) has on one’s surroundings. I came back to South Africa determined to make a difference and was able to utilise the resources and skills I had acquired to refurbish the Library at my previously disadvantaged school.
Reading has always been an important aspect of my life because it has built me up intellectually and culturally. From books I have learnt that my dreams transcend all barriers as long as I am ready to work towards them. As a result of this attitude, I was chosen as one of two representatives from my school for the Johannesburg Junior Council and was also elected as Head Girl of my school.
With the help of Kingsmead and Plascon Paint I was able to refurbish the Library at my previous primary school and hopefully the children will learn the importance of books and having a culture of reading.
