Rolf Zillmer, Grand Prismatic Spring in Midway Geyser Basin, 1973.
“…many thermal features have beautiful colors. A few colors come from minerals in the water. Most colors come from tiny plants called algae that grow in warm or cold water In very hot water, no algae can grow.
But as the water flows away and cools, it may provide a home for some algae which are yellow green to orange to dark green. Algae are the start of a food chain…You can see how algae grow at the Grand Prismatic Spring in Midway Geyser Basin. Others are at pools and springs in the West Thumb thermal basin.”
