My Final Work: The Sound of Glitch
The word glitch refers to an unpredictable irregularity in a system—digital and analogue alike. Explore the creative possibilities of glitch.
I was struggling finding other ideas to create glitch artworks when I first started to work with my assignment. Whenever I think of glitch, the only thing that appears in my head was the idea used for the assignment 1, which is creating images by using code and complier. In order to think of a brand new idea, I have done a bit of research on glitch artworks and artists and try to come up with some new ideas, however, the majority of the artworks that I have found from the internet are intentionally created “glitches”. In my opinion, glitches should be something that is unexpected, instead of forcing a picture to glitch out on purpose. Is there any easier way to find out real and impressive glitches? No, you have to do a lot of experiments before you can encounter a real glitch.
Until two weeks before the assignment due day, I still have got no idea what to do for my upcoming assignment. Suddenly, I realized that if I cannot think of any new ideas, why not just reuse the old one? Inspired by the the video shown in the studio which an amplifier is playing its echo by placing its mic on the speaker (unfortunately I cannot find that video). Therefore, the idea of the final work came up in my mind – create some other form of things using the data and code that I have been using for the previous assignment.
“Converting visible data into audio!”
The first thing I did was to change the file name and see if it works or not, for example: firefox.exe à firefox.mp3. It turns out that it is not that easy to convert a type of file into another. Then, I did quite a lot of research on “data to audios” and which is more complicated compared to what I thought it would be to convert these symbols ‘.’ ‘*’ ‘#’ into binaries and then audio clips.
After I watched this video, I have got a much clearer idea of what I am supposed to create.

Then, I finally managed to modify my code a bit and start doing some experiment of creating glitch audios. At the beginning of my experiments, most of the sounds are very short and noisy. I have to make some loops and noise reduction in order to create some useable audio clip for my work. After hours of generating different audio clips, most of the audio clips generated makes me feel anxious, nervous and terrified. Some of these clips are surprisingly good as a form as a background music or sound effect for horror games and horror movie scenes.
I decided to extend these audio clips a bit more instead of stopping here. I have found some interesting video clips from horror game gameplays and some horror gif on the internet. And I muted the original audio of the videos and put the glitch audio on the video. I also include a jump scare scene in the ending which is actually a way to attract the attention of the audiences, this could leave a more memorable impression in their mind.
And that is how my work The Sound of Glitch had been created.
Here are some of the steps to convert data into audio:
1. Generating random glitch images using number and symbols
2. Convert symbols e.g.: ‘*’ --> 42 (the number order of * in computer)
3. Convert 42 (decimal) --> 101010 (binary)
4. Do step 2 and 3 for every single point of the images and put these in a file.txt
5. Convert binary files into audio files using http://zhangjw.bai-hua.org/audio_test8.html or import the file.txt directly into Adobe Audition
6. Noise reduction or add filter effects to highlight the pattern of the audio clips using Audition
This video gives the audience a message that if u look at something from a different angle, you would see something completely different. If you look at those glitches images, some of them are actually quite cute and wonderful (like the minion one). However, if you try to convert them into audio clip, the only feeling that you can get by listening to the clips is anxious. In fact, they all look the same to the computer, just frosty 1 and 0.
After finishing this assignment, I have learnt how to use some basic functions of Adobe Audition which I have never used before. These skills might help me managing to do a better job in editing video for the upcoming assignment of media arts.
To Conclude, this is an artwork that:

Inspiration for my poster Kibong Rhee - Perpetual Snow 2015 This fabulous artwork uses simple black and white symbols and lines created by programs arms. Which gives me an initial idea of using programming skills that I've got to create some images that I could put on my poster.

The word glitch can be referred to error, bugs, malfunction or problem of the computer, usually appears unexpectedly and no one would want to encounter glitch in their program or software. However, in this assignment, we have to make good use of the glitches to create some impressive artworks. With the inspiration from Perpetual Snow 2015 (Kibong Rhee), I was trying to create some images using C language (coding language) to make some simple shapes by plotting symbols like ‘.’ ‘o’ ‘*’ ‘1’ ‘0’ and see if there is anything I could put on my poster. “Wherever there’s light, there’s bugs.”, it is almost impossible to finish a program without encountering any bugs or errors. At the beginning of my tests, although I was not able to make the circles and squares as I expected due to some minor mistakes. Some weird images were generated by the compiler. I decided to screenshot those “unexpected” glitch images. After a short period of debugging, the bugs led to these glitch images were found and I decided to keep these unwanted bugs in my program and made a few minor adjustments of the “bugs”. Therefore, my final work is literally images generated by bugs. Hundreds of images were generated by the computer and around 30 of them were printed out and only 6 of them are on my poster. At the centre of the poster, I put a perfect circle and glitch images around the circle. This tells the viewers the idea that even though this circle could be the most perfect one among the group, you might be not the “best” one.
