breathofthepaya:
A twisting column of smoke enticed the girl, her head tipping with curiosity. How peculiar… Why would anyone camp directly between a village and a stable? Surely there had to be a reason…
Paya slipped on her sandals and grabbed a small oil lamp, making her way out of the building. The door groaned as she closed it, then the girl promptly began her brisk walk towards the source.
“Hello..?” Paya called out rather quietly. The lamp could only illuminate so much in the section of tall grass. Goddess, she hoped nothing would catch fire… “H-Hello? Are you alright out there?”
The voice had actually managed to surprise Tiss! He blinked once, and then twice, before finally getting a grip on himself and sitting upright, breaking the trance that the stars had wrought upon him.
“State your name!” He called out, trying to sound more intimidating than he was. As he moved, some of his gear shifted slightly in his backpack. The sound of metal could have been mistaken for armor, if one wasn’t listening well enough.
The voice had sounded harmless enough, but one could never be sure.
“I’m fine, yes! Why wouldn’t I be?”
There was a bit of an edge to the question. He spoke like someone who was not actually accustomed to having company all too often.
Despite his bitter tone, Paya kept hers warm but still worrisome. Her voice seemed to be closer to the other now as she trekked forward a little clumsily through the tall grass. “I j-just wanted to check up on you, it’s dangerous at night! Are you sure you’re a-”
And speaking of Demise, two stalkoblins ripped up the ground from underneath, wielding their boney clubs with a silent battlecry. Paya shrieked at the sight of their glowing yellow eyes, then stumbled away and promptly backwards into the mass of yellow-green brush.
The sound of her shriek filled the night air, and Tiss was to his feet in a matter of moments.
"Oh for the love of--"
He finally stepped out from the makeshift alcove of brush that he'd set up camp within. He probably looked impressive for all of a few moments as he sized up the stalkoblins, before two facts became noted. One, was that his knees were shaking just a bit, as if the traveler somehow was NOT expecting this to happen, and Two was that he didn't actually seem to be...armed.
In his hands he held what looked like a dusty old mop.
It wasn't much, but, it was all he had at the moment. As long as he could crush the heads, he was sure it would be fine.
A moment was taken by Tiss to contemplate just why he was doing this. The stranger wasn't any of his business, of course, but the way he saw it was that after the monsters were finished with her they'd undoubtedly turn for him afterwards.
He swung the mop down hard with an arch, hoping to at least knock the first creature off it's feet.
