With this project, I aimed to recreate Donald Judd's "stacks," with my own twist: crochet. While it is smaller than the original I believe it is not lesser for this difference in size bi believe that the smaller size makes the wall surround it, which changes how it is viewed. The three colors I used represent different things to me. As a small girl I rebelled against any instance of pink. I refused to be "sullied" by its presence in my life. As I've grown, not only in size but also as a person, I have realized that pink is not the enemy. The enemy, instead, is the society that says one cannot like pink and also be tough, and interesting, and powerful. Hence the inclusion of red. Red is a very powerful color. Blue because when I turned away from pink, I embraced blue everything. Blue is still my favorite color, but now it represents to me not only my childhood but also how far I've come.

My proposal for the collaboration is to take inspiration from Donald Judd. I wish to replicate this, except using yarn, and a riot of colors to represent the many different ways this simplistic design has been remade by him.

The shorter of our two readings, The Contingent Object of Contemporary Art, is about an art installation in which the artist “presented historic artifacts in new and unexpected combinations.” He used his knowledge to show how context frames meaning in objects. Collectors, in the other reading, ‘The Art of Collecting Lightbulbs’ from The Accidental Masterpiece, also change the context of the objects. By collecting them, they change them from ordinary, everyday things into symbolic objects. “Collected objects become symbolic when they lose their utilitarian purpose.” By being collected, they become enshrined by their collectors. It changes the meaning of the object, from one of usefulness to a sacred object. The collector, Barnes, had a fanatical obsession with how his art was arranged; he wanted to control the context of it, much like the artist in The Contingent Object of Contemporary Art. He displayed his artworks in “odd, mixed-up arrangements, seemingly arbitrary to the uninitiated.” This changing of context fits right in with the theme of The Contingent Object. Barnes would place paintings from no-name artists next to paintings from the greats. He would put together pieces where he thought they had compositional elements together. By doing so, he changed how people saw his works of art.

The Tower Proposal

1. Will you use natural forms or geometric forms as building blocks, or both?

2. How tall will your tower be? Are you going for height, or fine

I will be using geometric shapes as the building blocks for my tower. I am mostly going for height; I want to make it three to four feet tall. I intend to make my tower a relatively uniform width and depth, with some shifts.

A response to The Eiffel Tower by Roland Barthes

“The Tower is also present to the entire world. First of all as a universal symbol of Paris, it is everywhere on the globe where Paris is stated to be an image. . . there is no journey to France which isn't made, somehow, in the Tower's name. . .” This quote shows how a well designed tower can captivate, even those who have never stood in its presence. The Eiffel Tower is a commonly recognized symbol of Paris, and France; its meaning is extended past that of an ordinary building by doing so.

". . . any commerce has a space-taming function; selling, buying, exchanging--it is by these simple gestures that men truly dominate the wildest sites, the most sacred constructions." The way the Eiffel Tower is constructed allows room for vendors to sell their wares. And yet, by doing so, they "tame" the sacred site of the Tower.
