How to talk to the wind
If the wind falls silent, she is listening to you. Speak.
Always whisper.
In case there is a wind swirl carrying autumn leaves, step back. Let her dance.Ā
Donāt go outside if the wind is howling. The ghosts are passing through.Ā
She already knows everything about you. Never lie.
You may play the flute.
Listen to storms. Donāt talk.Ā
She gives life to your words. Make them meaningful. Especially when you talk to her.
If she whispers in your ear, listen closely. It means she trusts you enough to share her secrets.Ā
Words travel far and fast. Donāt say anything that could awake the spirits.Ā
She has a strong temperament and gets angry easily. Make sure to always be nice to her, you donāt want to be on her bad side.
If she is talking to thunder, leave them alone. They donāt want you to hear.Ā
When she greets you with a breeze the following morning, pretend you didnāt hear them.Ā
A sudden draft is always a bad omen.Ā
Never, ever, complain about her. She will remember.

Surviving a Desert
I did the dishes, went for a short walk with the dogs outback, dumped the food that had been piling up into the compost pile by the barn. The girls (sisterās dog that loves to sleepover, & my dog) ran around happily and played while I did this and that cheered me up a bit. We havenāt been able to go on long walks in the woods for months because my job left me so exhausted. And the weather has been bad recently. There were two small trees near the tree line that hang on to their orange leaves through the winter and they whispered in the breeze. I told them I loved them and they went silent. Maybe they want to keep their secrets?
Why Am I Like This
I now see why I struggled with showing my interests to my parents when I was a kid.
Iām listening to my cousin going on about Fortnite. The kid adores the game and is talking about the battle pass and he how hopes to get it later on today.
My mum just flatly says she doesnāt know what that means and has told him to hurry up as they go through the door, not giving my cousin any wiggle room to explain what it means. Fortnite is special to him, he wants to talk about it, he wants to engage but how can he when at that moment, the adult heās talking to shuts him down?
Why canāt some people just take a damn minute to listen, REALLY listen to what kids are saying? Heāll now sit in the car in complete silence because his aunt isnāt interested in what he likes.
Iām not saying everyone has to be a fountain of knowledge for things like that. Hell, you donāt have to like what another personās into but for the love of god, at least TRY and give it a go in understanding why itās so important to that person.
āOooh, that sounds neat! Tell me about it?ā Is one of the best things you can say to a kid. (Or an author.) It matters less that you understand it than it does that they are allowed- are *encouraged*- to explain it
And also, if youāre truly lost:
āIām not sure what that is, can you explain it to me?ā
Kids LOVE getting to tell an adult something the adult doesnāt know. It makes them feel important because hey, weāre grownups! We know everything! Wait, we donāt? Wow! Let me tell you!
also if youāre like me youāve had your family just up and say everything you like is stupid and thatās like. the worst possible thing please just fuckin listen to kids
the fucking slapping noise is incredible
This is unsettling.
1-800-R-U-SLAPPIN
A round of applause
When I was 18 I took a ballet class at college and every morning our beginner adult class started just as the Ballet Majors in the studio next door took a mid-class break.
Many mornings they would gather in the doorway of my classroom and watch us struggle through our bar warmups or jumble up a new technique while they smiled and whispered to each other.
And every morning I dreaded seeing them there because I knew they were making fun of me.
I had other classes with some of them, and I was always embarrassed when ballet came up, and it always did, them being ballet majors, because I loved to talk about it but knew theyād seen me dance, and I was sure they thought I didnāt belong in the conversation.
At the end of the semester, our instructor announced that sheād like to invite the dancers from the next door studio to sit in on our final performance as an audience, and everyone in my class hesitated. Weād worked so hard, we wanted to celebrate our progress during our final without being judged. Most of us left class that day suddenly more anxious about the final than weād ever been.
The next morning, in one of my other classes I had with the ballet majors, one of them approached me, and as if sheād been reading our minds the entire semester, she said
āHey. I just wanted to say that I know we watch you guys dance a lot, and I wanted to make sure you know weāre never laughing at you. When we watch you guys learn the basicsā¦..it reminds us of when we first started when we were younger. Itās likeā¦looking at ourselves when we first fell in love with dancing. Thatās why we love watching you guys.ā
It shocked me. I felt awash with relief and utterly stupid all at once.
Here I had spent an entire semester assuming the worst of people who had otherwise been nothing but nice to me in every other setting, and I had no one to blame for that but my own insecurities that Iād allowed to rule me for months.
Iād been so unfair to these girls, because I was self conscious. I was so worried about being judged that Iād judged all of them.
Here I was worried they were laughing at me, and all along they were looking at me with nothing but absolute delight, even envy for what I was getting to experience.
This encounter changed my entire attitude, permanently.
It made me realize that, yeah sometimes people are jerks for no reason, but more often than not, people really are justā¦.Good.
Since that day, Iāve started giving everyone the benefit of the doubt until they prove me wrong, for their sake and for my own.
And Iāve learned that the world becomes a lot better and life becomes a lot easier when you accept that maybe not everyone is judging you. Maybe youāre the one whoās hardest on yourself.
Let yourself be. Let yourself exist and breathe and be happy.
The world is a much better place.
Oh and with all the āhappy new yearā messages floating around:
hereās a reminder that itās also okay not to be happy right now. You deserve to be and Iām sorry if you arenāt, but itās okay. You donāt have to justify your feelings to anyone. You donāt have to be happy just because itās a holiday.
people who actually got to party to the songs that came out in 2009-2010 are so lucky too bad i was eleven
like imagine pulling up to a house party and hearing dynamite by taio cruz blasting iād lose my fucking mind
iāve decided to spend the last 2 days of 2018 just chilling. like⦠iāve been so stressed about productivity and āmaking the most of my breakā that I havenāt actually had a break.
just wanted to speak that into existence.

mermaids would have to be dark-skinned and chubby to survive in the oceanĀ
water isnt a great means of protecting oneself from the sun theyd have to be very dark if they were shallow mermaids and they didnt want to be constantly sunburnt and they may be paler if they lived deeper in the water but theyd have to be buff and/or chubby as hell to resist the water pressure and cold of the deep sea
what im saying is pale-ass white skinny mermaids are just unrealistic
I love this tea
Fat isnāt a defense against water pressure, itās an insulator. So the colder the water, the fatter the mermaid.
Scandinavian merfolk would be tubby, evolving more for persistence hunting in the freezing coastal waters, possibly relying more on siren-song to lull prey into effective range. The less moving the better! Gotta keep the chub on to survive the winter.
Whereas Mediterranean/Polynesian merfolk would spend their time among the fertile reefs in warmer waters, competing with other predators. They would be built for speed and agility, buff like sprinters. Darker skin would be harder to spot under the surf, and more resistant to the glaring sun.
Also: itās not hair, itās scillia that they use to filter plankton out of the water, and it stings like a jellyfish if you touch it.
I would imagine that merfolk come in many different colors, maybe they even have the ability to shift their skin tone to assist in hunting? I guess that depends on how intelligent your mermaids are.
Tldr; cold water mermaids would probably be chubby, warm water mermaids would look like Serna Williams.
Another thing to take into account is Deep-Sea-Gigantism. Itās not fully understood why many animal species such as the colossal squid and whales typically grow to unimaginable sizes in high-water-pressure areas, but itās assumed that it develops as some sort of defense mechanism. This would imply that deep-sea merfolk would be a sort of Leviathan-class eldritch horror.Ā
Hell yeah hell yeah
