I feel like a lot of people don't really pay attention to the way queer masculinity underpins Garak and Bashir's characterisation. Like so much of Garak's interaction with other Cardassians is subtextually about his failures in heterosexual masculinity but Garak excels specifically because they underestimate him due these failures.
Meanwhile so much of Bashir's behaviour is about performing straight masculine archetypes, the British ones especially - 007, RAF pilots. He hides behind these rôles and it reeks of compulsory heterosexuality and toxic masculinity because Bashir makes himself play these rôles - be the hero and kiss the girl. He's so desperate to bé normal, average. Never think too much about who you are and what you really want. Maybe because he's terrified of who is if he isnt performing. He's been told all his life about the horror of augments, so if he ever put down the mask what if its Khan underneath.
That's why OMB fucks so severely. Its about performing masculinity with Garak, the gayest bitch around, critiquing it in the background the whole time. Its about sexualising the straight male archetype for a gay male audience.
Good tea, nice house.
