If he’s surprised, then she’s confounded. She’s experienced virtually every form of greeting known to man--clients seem to think NOVELTY is necessary to impress her. But opening with a lesson in ancient etymology? That’s a new one.

It’s strange, but there’s a charm to it, too. “I had no idea,” she says, a slow smile blooming across her face. “When my people departed from Earth-That-Was--sorry, I suppose it’s Earth-That-Is--most of our knowledge of ancient human cultures was lost. In fact, Earth is near MYTHICAL in and of itself.”

How many times had she heard those exact same words from Wash?

Once upon a time it had instilled her with panic. Momentarily, at least–a few fluttering heartbeats followed by the realization that everyone in this neighborhood of the ‘verse had a humor dry as DUST. A proper Core-bred pilot would never dream of joking about crashing–but it was a near weekly ritual aboard Serenity. 

And maybe there was a mote of truth in there somewhere. ( It was an old ship, after all. ) But they were still alive, and they were still flying–and every day aboard Serenity was worth a HUNDRED spent on Sihnon. In the face of his dire prophecy she found herself smiling, cradled against a weathered bulkhead in the cockpit. It was hard for her to walk from one end of the ship to the other without getting grease smudged somewhere or other, and stars knew how many good clothes she’d ruined aboard the Firefly. But that didn’t change the truth: nowhere in the ‘verse did she feel safer than between its rusty bones.

“Don’t you dare,” she crept forward, leaning over his chair to look at the instrumentation. She was wearing a smile in spite of the warning in her words. “I need this appointment to make this month’s rent. You know what would happen if I fell behind on rent? Mal would have free reign to waltz onto my shuttle anytime he pleased. And that, sir, would be CHAOS.”
