by the angel, he should have known. it was him who mentioned the sheer number of demons, but the task seemed easy enough at the time. it would have been, without that single moment that happened too fast to process. one second he was aiming at the last demon, the next he was pushed out of the way by aziel, who ended up taking a strike meant for him. guilt is gnawing on him as he uses his body to stabilize the nephilim, discomfort evident on his features as he escorts him to the infirmary. julian sits him down on one of the beds and swallows, the scent of blood sharp in his nose. ❛ get the fabric out of the way. we'll see what the iratze can fix. ❜ and how many stitches he needs for the rest of it. the head of the institute runs a hand through his hair, ignoring the fact that it might be as blood smeared as aziel is, as he studies today's schedule. it's that question that makes him turn around, eyes narrowed. ❛ i'm not going to lie to my parabatai. ❜ who can probably feel that something's wrong right now. ❛ are you? ❜
aziel thinks about it. a pause : one that drags on a bit longer than the usual whenever he's asked a question he finds difficult to answer. does he want to? no. his sister meant everything to him, and he knows trust is something earned and delicate, and he doesn't wish to lose it. yet, a part doesn't want to worry her, the way he knows she would be. he's fine, surrounded by the walls of the institute and in capable hands of none other than her parabatai. his own probably on the way as he thinks.
he grabs whatever blade he had hidden away in his jacket as he discards it, sharp edges cutting through the fabric of his shirt to the side, enough to leave a good window for julian and keeps him decent enough. does the same to his pants : whatever, he has a handful of others. “ no. ” the answer tumbles out through a groan at the faintest of movements to the side, trying to peek at the damage to his side. “ but look at it, and tell me if it's really worth worrying over. ”

he hissed. his weight shifted, almost entirely held up by julian on their track back home ⸻ the head hadn't been exaggerating, the sheer volume of demons had come close to overwhelming even for the pair : training and natural talent meant little when the numbers were against you.
the last of them had more fight than previously anticipated. heterochromatic eyes had caught the crawling bastard a moment too late, just shy of his leader's left and had just enough time to push the archer out of the way. the problem was now that the strike had hit the angel born, razor sharp causing wound on his left waist to mid thigh. seraph had plunged into its chest a second later, and finally, the mission was over. “ no chance we can keep this from rory, is there? ”
it is unlike cosimo to regret things in general, but he would definitely never regret allowing his children to attend an institute ⸻ they are welcome to come home, he has never made a secret out of that. like every father should, he only wants what's best for his offspring. now and forever. ❛ i got you. ❜ he responds, gaze meeting that of his favorite bartender. it only takes a nod of his head and they work on drinks for both of them while a chuckle escapes his lips. ❛ hey now. jealousy is not a good look on you. i did try to pass my cooking skills on to you. don't blame me for your preferences. ❜
“ and delusion on you. ” angel born snorted, though knew his own skills with a blade were best used on his seraph companion than in the kitchen ⸻ his skills were passable, good enough to keep him alive and fed, but angels help us all if they are passed down to his own hypothetical kids. “ but i won't lie, better you than i, you've got me there. i'm sensible enough to know that any cooking of mine would have poisoned the kids long ago. ”
it may be an old promise, one that is incredibly difficult to uphold among shadowhunters, but it serves as a reminder that some things are worth fighting for. more so, it proves that they care ⸻ despite the endless arguments, rolled eyes and attempts to annoy the living hell out of each other. ❛ that makes two of us. ❜ and yet, julian knows better than to expect his parabatai to stay behind, let alone give up on them. maybe that is why the faintest trace of relief mixes into his frustration tonight. her absence gives him a disadvantage on the field, but it also means she's safe. ❛ yes. ❜ his tone is slightly sharper than usual as he narrows his eyes. ❛ my order. ❜ he knows it must be strange to take them from him, knows that aziel does respect him, but this job is starting to feel much more challenging than it should have. his hands add arrows to the quiver and he nods, just once before he starts to move toward the exit of the institute. ❛ yeah. and a seraph blade in case i run out. let's go. ❜
a cold front passes through glacial eyes, shot at the head of the institute : his only indication that aziel had switched, flipped into what he is most famous for. a golden soldier at the ready for instructions. it would seem odd to others, to those who hadn't yet had the privilege of working with him, how quick the change was. witty, theatrical a second, methodical and monstrous the next.
his boots hit the porcelain of the institute heavily, quickly, and out the doors into the biting air of new york. chest heaved, strong heart beat snapping against ribcage, with his stele gripped and dragged across the speed rune to get wherever they needed to go quicker. aziel breathed, turning towards the direction of city hall and making a run for it. “ divide and conquer, split up and meet back at city hall? or are we going straight for the biggest source of demonic energy together? ”

the faerie realm taught her not to trust strangers and while some of said strangers may have ended up worming their way into her heart, that list is ridiculously short. it is because of that, that aleyna does not regret her decision to turn down the offer ⸻ even as the other begins to eat, proving that it would have been perfectly safe. the questioning look almost makes her laugh and she lets out a soft, amused breath. ❛ it's good. really good. i don't actually believe in eating anything that's not worth it to me. ❜
“ worth it in what way? ” rozaliya delicately hummed, twirling utensil in her fingers like a wand : of all things mortal, and mundane opinion, food is where the main population often disagrees on. never interested her, never craved to try leafy bowls not from the realm. “ there are so many ⸻ categories to judge from these days. taste? calories? color? ”
the prince of hell's attention swung with each new butterlfy that appeared, unconcerned by the fae's tricks as they were with most. their existence spanned longer than most enough that they weren't easily swayed, their attentions captured by factors that were as fickle as their tastes. " most animals do. i assume it's because i leave them be. " aside from his dogs, those he captured off of the street like a reverse trapper. " i'm sure they tell good secrets. "
“ secrets, truths. lies, knowledge. yes, my children are quite the chattering bunch. ” their little spies, hidden in corners, blending into nature's serenity and beauty : some secrets they know that they should not. “ some people share too much with them, without meaning to. how does the saying go? woods have ears, fields have eyes? ”
her expression stays blank at the teasing criticism. aurora has never been one for easy fun ( at least, not by most definitions ) especially when she's wearing the mantle of a shadowhunter. and certainly not now, standing across from someone who’s already betrayed her trust. ❛ we found a dead unseelie. i'm wondering if you— ❜ or her butterflies ❛ — heard anything about it. ❜
“ would you be here if you had your doubts? ” words caressed the line between a truth and a lie : not quite an answer, but dismissive enough to appear as one. the cloak shed, and hardened exterior of the representative proof that the death of one of the king's people was in fact not a surprise. “ a question for you ⸻ why does the clave's soldiers now turn their focus towards the death of an unseelie. curiosity? responsibility? or something else entirely? ”

𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃 tilts to the side , a quiet chuckle slipping past her lips at the vampire's response . its obvious she hadn't expected to be interrupted seeking refuge and some sort of peace among the graves . ❝ oh , please . ❞ yesenia brushes away the suggestion , the other woman's way of making this less awkward . the witchpire would've been actually annoyed had the other pretended , ❝ do you usually spend your friday night's lingering around random graves ? ❞ she asks , more so intrigued , as she places the small bouquet inside of the vase attached to the gravestone .
“ it's not a hobby, no. ” fingers unclasped, catching the woman's movement with unnerving speed. there was no use pretending : the ache is curbed, taking a backseat when she focused on the other. isara seemed more relaxed. ⸻ knees that would rub red, blood flowing to the surface remained pale as the girl stood from the grave with cat like grace. “ i was trying to get away from the main road. too much going on. your friend was just the first to catch my eye. ”
❛ i thought i smelt you here. ❜ a sentence that might sound odd to anyone who isn't a downworlder. she slows when she spots isara, kneeling at the grave ⸻ her face serious, distant, wearing an expression that feels achingly familiar. one violet has seen reflected back at her in mirrors more than once. her steps soften as she draws closer, voice quieter now, careful not to disturb the stillness wrapped around them. ❛ you good ? ❜
the young vampire still feels like a stranger in her own body. ⸻ what was once driven by mundane humanity, now combats a lurking monstrosity every night. she does everything, fights every undead nerve craving a walk into the occupied square : to slaughter, and feed it. sometime, she needed to be away from everything. everyone. at the presence of kin, another just like her, that beast calmed, eased into something more docile. the somber expression was still worn, but she managed to look relieved at violet's intervention. “ yes. at least, now i am. my cravings were getting a bit violent for a moment, had to step away. ”
she could not for the life of her figure out why everyone had been so jumpy lately. marina glanced down at the vampire in confusion, dark gaze watching skeptically. " most people aren't jumpy in cemeteries unless they're doing something they need not be. " unsure of what it could be nor did she care much. " the things to fear would be underground, not walking above. " then again, there were always things worse than death. her first had been a mere drop in the bucket, the second by way of infernal cup the sort of torture that mundanes could only dream in their wildest nightmares.
isara wasn't really most people : it could be argued most people didn't crave blood, or needed a moment away to get those urges in check. “ i'm not a fan of phi, and frankly i wasn't expecting someone else to be around at this hour. ” a half truth, born of her mother's rooted superstitions ⸻ stories she grew up with, warnings and late night stories to deter her from stepping out past curfew. “ maybe in the daytime, but a cemetery at night is a whole 'nother story. it'd be weirder to not be so jumpy when among the dead. ”
𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙨 : open , @startyourdescent 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 : outside of a random bodega , midday
𝐍𝐔𝐑𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀 hangover on a monday was the last thing anyone needed and despite not being able to stomach anything other than coffee , the hunger was beginning to catch up to her . she needed something hearty and slightly greasy , and she needed it now . the only place with any sense of urgency was the bodega : ' bacon , egg and cheese on a bagel , salt pepper ketchup . ' the shadowhunter moves through the aisles with ease grabbing a coke and bag of chips along the way , she bids the owner of the establishment ⸻ an orange tabby named gustavo , farewell with a scratch between his ears before heading back out . a bit too desperate to get something in her system , josie makes the 𝘚𝘛𝘜𝘗𝘐𝘋 mistake of unwrapping her bagel , ready to take a bite just as she's bumped into by someone , sending said bagel to the ground . or had she walked into them ? ❝ my bagel ! man , what the 𝗳𝘂𝗰𝗸 . ❞
sure, his focus hadn't been a hundred percent on where he was going. his blood sang, pulled him in this and that direction trying to find the feeling of something unpleasant creeping nearby : chasing uncomfortable intuition. but was he completely at fault when a familiar blonde walked smack into him? he'd say no. a sound of annoyance pulled itself from his chest, blues bleeding into brown stabbed into josie's figure, and gloved hands fruitlessly wiped at the grease spot now on his jacket. “ what the fuck right back at you, josie. did you forget your training back at the institute? ”
❛ and it was. socializing is very important. ❜ if only to learn how to keep your friends close and your enemies closer. a hum leaves his lips and he turns toward the bar, glancing at his son. ❛ drink? ❜ the question lingers as he makes a face, almost mirroring aziel's expression. ❛ i suppose it's high praise. you are trustworthy and skilled enough to be chosen. ❜ and yet, the truth remains. the morgenstern siblings were born for something much greater than the clave. ❛ i think this calls for a family dinner. ❜ as well as a vacation from the institute, if that's what the nephilim wants.
aziel agreed with cosimo, finding it easier to navigate certain circumstances from early exposure. quicker to pick up on body language, faster to the draw with words. “ recommendations? ” the dip of his back leaned back onto the mahogany of the bar, not feeling like turning his back to a crowd tonight. “ not high praise, not really. it's the obvious choice. ” because i'm your son, is on the tip of his tongue but the nephilim instead lets it hang between them unsaid. “ will you be cooking? the kitchen barely survived the last time. ”
there is no reason to be embarrassed, least of all for aziel. this is his room, his privacy. if anything, julian could have waited a second longer before waltzing in ⸻ but they are used to a lack of time, used to the urgency of duty. there have been far more embarrassing moments in each of their lives. ❛ that's not what it is. ❜ even if aziel is teasing. ❛ i think she would rather die with us. ❜ three go in, three come out. fortunately, this is not the riskiest mission. things could get messy, but the two of them don't show up to play. aurora has nothing to worry about. the shadowhunter decides to stock up his quiver as soon as they reach the armory and he sighs at the question. ❛ no. whoever is behind these attacks knows how to cover their tracks. ❜ he pulls the quiver over his shoulder and makes his way out of the institute, walking next to the blond. ❛ i doubt they're going to talk. ❜ besides, shax demons are not exactly famous for their braincells. ❛ so my order is to kill on sight. ❜
three go in, three come out. an old promise between children that hadn't been broken yet : and aziel had no desire to. leaving julian and aurora alone in a world corrupt and unsteady? the thought is enough to further steel his resolve to come back every time. “ yeah, you're right. as much as i'd rather she didn't. ”
blades are hidden in easy to reach places, tucked into belt and within the lining of his jacket. if a pair failed, another to take their place in a comfortable amount of time. ⸻ the two compliment each other's fighting styles, and it cements the fact that this mission could not fail. “ oo-oh, your order. ” he chided, snickered though made no comment to actually mock his authority. he was reckless, selfish minded, but he respected julian that much. moves him like a pawn, and he doesn't second guess it. “ then let's get this mission done. quicker we kill them, quicker we can come back and get yelled at. ready to go? enough arrows? ”
that grin earns an exaggerated squint from her, even as her mouth twitches upward. ❛ yeah, yeah, don't let it go to your head. ❜ she shoots back dry but warm, hands tucked into the pockets of her sweater as they walk. ❛ mischief. of course. shocking. truly. i'm stunned. ❜ but the humor fades a touch at the mention of demon attacks, her gaze cutting briefly toward him. ❛ you holding up alright with all that ? ❜ casual tone, not prying ⸻ just checking.
she shrugs one shoulder when the question turns back on her. ❛ same chaos, different day. ❜ a smile follows. ❛ wrangling the twins, running on blood and caffeine, pretending i know what i'm doing most of the time. you know ... the usual. ❜
“ too late. ” then a dramatic show of fingers miming the growth of his ego ⸻ ending in a flourishing explosion. it's a rare talent, he tells himself, to keep him humble. few possess it, and fewer wield it as well as his sister. poor violet, to have married into a family with a high ego population. the sound in his throat is non comital, and if that wasn't enough of an answer, “ kind of part of the whole hunting shadows package. never anything i can't handle. ”
“ if you and papà need a break, i could always drop by and take the twins off your hands. ” aziel offers selfishly, because if you were to ask him, there's few things he misses more than his younger siblings. one of many downsides of living at the institute. “ that way you can focus on your vampire life crisis. ” he joked.
